Fortunately I have my own range at my farm. I have gained a few new friends that used to have to go to ranges and they couldn’t stand going to them anymore. They now come out to my farm and bring a grill and lots of food and we make an afternoon out of it. The best part is that most of them own many high end firearms that I otherwise would never be able to afford and so we all get to try a wide variety of guns 👍🇺🇸

I consider myself lucky! In Florida, the Fish and Game Commission operate and maintain several outdoor ranges. Most are well built, well equipped, and clean. Some even have small structures with restrooms. (and a classroom used for state functions) They are open to the public 7 days per week and are free! Basic firearms rules apply (with a few additional minor restrictions) There is a mix of experience on the range however, most regular visitors are not shy about politely correcting unsafe or unwanted behavior. This availability has been a blessing and I wish more states offered locations like these.

The range I go to here in Arizona, a guy showed up yesterday with reloaded .357 cartridges, who after the event, revealed he bought them online from a private party, in a zip lock bag. The event? The cylinder in his brand new 900.00$ revolver exploded and the bullet went straight up, putting a hole in the tin cover of the outdoor bay. Requiring him to use their ammo might have prevented this. The day before that, a man a couple aisles down began to shout at the shooter directly to his left, because ejected hot brass was going down the back of his shirt, he absolutely lost his temper and started to rant, demanding the range go cold, so he could retrieve his target and leave. You really expect firearm owners to be a bit more calm and intelligent than many prove themselves to be

I'm pretty sure it's nowhere near 99%. Here in AZ everyone has access to something else. And it is that way in many states. Even in anti gun states like CA, NY, and MA, there is likely some other alternative, though you may have to travel some distance to get to it. I drive almost 50 miles to where I go to shoot, then 50 miles back home. Still 100 times better than going to a gun range.

I've had all those experiences as well, but the ones I flatly refuse to go to are the ones that forbid you from collecting your own spent brass for reloading. Of course they camouflage it as a "safety issue", except they load their own ammo with it to sell to customers.

I agree completely on your reasons. Most public ranges near me don't charge membership. However there are so many nitpicky rules. You have to buy and use their targets. Most only call ceasefire every 20-30 mins so if you want to shoot 25 yds to site in then move to 100 ys for final site in, you end up wasting a lot of time. Also, I'm always worried about the novices shooting me accidentally. They come in groups of 3-6 people, don't really know how to safely handle their weapons, always laughing/giggling while shooting.

Full covered, shooting benches across the whole place, rimmed with seating, stools at all the benches, ports potties, two huge wood stoves, and best of all, its self policed and self safety orientated with no idiots, we keep them out, one shows up, acts a fool, they rounded up asked stop or leave and then the membership is revoked if they repeat, best range I’ve ever been in involved with in 60 years, 25 minutes from my town and out in the rural.

We have many ranges in Minnesota . I do belong to one that has five locations around the Twin Cities and Wisconsin. After watching Mark's video on this I feel lucky. We can belong with membership, it does have benefits, but anyone can just rent a lane. No restrictions on where we purchase ammo. The only restriction I see is that drawing form holsters etc. I understand that for safety reasons. I can go anytime so certain times have very few people. Ventilation is excellent. I do agree with Mark on the "idiot" thing. I do see dings in the walls and ceiling that I wonder "how did that happen'' !!

I have been to a gun range once in my life, and it was awful. I went with my former sister in laws husband, who is a member of an "exclusive" gun club. It's fairly expensive. For him it's not just about shooting, it's about socializing as well. And I am not into socializing, other than immediate family members and a couple of close friends. I went as his "guest", and he paid. They are not super rich, but they live in a two million $$$ house, and own five other houses, which are rental properties. He can afford it. The people there were very "uppity", had super expensive guns, and I could tell they were looking down at me and my "normal" guns (S&W M&P Sport II AR and RIA 1911) Perhaps the worst part of it is you are always being watched. They have cameras everywhere. Way too many rules. I couldn't wait to get out of there. I live in AZ, and here we are allowed to shoot on BLM land. So we can basically just go out into the desert and shoot without having to deal with all the BS at gun ranges. If you have ever watched Mixup98's channel, that's the way we do it here as well. I bought a 1975 Jeep CJ-5 mostly to drive out into the desert to go shooting. I take a fold up table and targets, along with my guns and ammo. I take everything I brought with me, I don't leave trash behind, though sadly many do. I mostly shoot .22LR, because of the cost, and I do not shoot at paper targets. I don't care anything about "groups". I like to shoot at things that move when you hit them. Many gun ranges don't even allow .22LR. I can easily shoot up 500 rounds of .22LR in a day of shooting. I have 11 guns chambered in .22LR, as many as all my other guns combined.

I don't like public range here cause you can't shoot steel and the only one thats any good requires a " sponsor" to get you in door, then you gotta work several weekends a year , and you must shoot in competition once a month. I can't relate to most of that. Mine is $60 a year. That includes one indoor pistol range. One 600yd rifle range, two 22lr only ranges, 5 pistol ranges, 2 fishing ponds, and clay courses, skeet and trap (which you have to buy the clays). One of the pistol ranges is ok for machineguns. There is a youth program where they teach kids to shoot a 4H program. Alcohol is allowed even on the shooting ranges as long as no one is drunk. As for the brass its take whatever you want. I love it.

I agree 100%. Fortunately I have a perpetual membership at an outdoor range that I got through trade, but I don't shoot often because I don't want to burn through ammo. I will not shoot at an indoor range period. My range has individual smaller ranges separated by berms and tires, so when I shoot, I am completely by myself, unless a buddy goes down with me. They don't force or even encourage shooters to buy their ammo. It's just there and reasonably if they want to. They do have an hourly rate to the general public. We have seen some major stupidity and such individuals are thrown out and barred from returning. It's unfortunate that we have gotten to this place as a society.

The indoor gun range I go to near me only charges $25 for ALL DAY! You can use your own ammo, just no AP, incendiaries (duh), green tips, and only shotgun slugs. Regarding Wyatt Earp holster draws and rapid fire, same here, but for safety’s sake I’m okay with that. As for idiots on the firing line, there is an RSO watching through a glass window. Plus EVERYONE on the range is a de facto RSO. I personally have offered to assist less experienced folks when they encountered a jam or misfire, and were not handling the situation correctly. The place is only a few years old and their ventilation is top notch. You can actually feel the breeze at your back when standing on the firing line. All the air is being forcibly drawn to the front of the range, filtered, then exhausted out of roof mounted fans. Also about an hour from me is an awesome outdoor range where you can shoot pistols, skeet, and out to 600 yards. Just the perfect place to let my 338 Lapua stretch her legs!

We have a public range at a TWRA hunting area in Tn. One guy allowed his young boys to cross the danger line multiple times, even without the required safety glasses and hearing protection. 3 unlawful acts worthy of citations. I was attempting to sight-in a G1 T/C Contender with several barrels, first was a .223/5.56. This particular one is a bit loud with the ported 14” barrel. I winked at my law-enforcement son, and prepared to shoot. BOOM!!! So when the dust cleared, those two mischievous boys were hiding behind daddy, who had a panicked look on his face. They no longer were demanding to shoot daddy’s 9mm pistol on “rapid-fire” & NO ONE ELSE took shots from the pistol range when we were down-range on the rifle range like before! They left! Leaving made both ranges 10000% safer, now that they’re gone!

Used to belong to a club with outdoor ranges. If I was careful I could pick times that no one else was there. Then sometimes organized activities would be going on that I did not know about and you just go back home. I was able to get accepted as a member and went but they started jacking up the annual fees till it was too much to swallow. Now I got just an indoor range close and it is OK for an indoor pistol range but the lighting is terrible for me and so accuracy testing is out because your sights cannot be seen very clearly. I guess that is good for "tactical" training or something. OR wasting ammo just from need.

They can really be hit or miss but my indoor range is pretty good. Membership allows free rentals and anything not rimfire, you have to buy their ammo. It's name brand stuff and decently priced. Their gun, their ammo. Understandable. It's really helped my son learn, too. He has the ADD and being "boxed in" in the lane helps keep him focused. That being said, we do enjoy going to the shootin' ditch back home. My brother and I bring our small arsenals, set up targets and it's very free form.
