I miss going to university, it was always very intellectually stimulating and I miss that. But I do wish it had been less independent study and more teaching us, I felt like I paid so much to just work by myself in a corner sometimes.

as a person who has BA in photography and doing MA in contemporary art, i agree with all of it. To be honest i quite agree with both videos - why do it and why don`t do it. But in this video i would add one thing (ok two things) that wasn`t much addressed, and for me proves to be actually more important than others - if you want to be an artist and your goal is the fancy part of artist life - the art shows ( gallery, museums etc) the degree in art becomes valuable. Sure everyone knows a story about someone that got thru with out it, but art school gives you contacts. Not only contacts of your local curators that you will meet during the course of you school life but also FUTURE curators. Who study there with you. And in most cases it is most valuable thing to have. Like Harvard Business school is more about getting best and most valuable contacts in business world. Same thing applies to art schools. I don`t say it is easy but you WILL have a better starting point. Not to mention you get years of burtal feedback. In real life the hardest thing to get is a honest feedback.

Mr Nobody, did you feel like a ba in photography was worth it? The uni im planing on going to next year has a bachelor of visual arts and im thinking about majoring in photography (i know this isn't the same exact course but unfortunately there is no plain photography degree anymore) but im a little hesitatant that its not the right move for photography.

@@amynicole4630 For me it was well worth it. Just because i really love photography, not only as a photographer or artist but also as a viewer. At one point i just couldnt evolve. I mean technical stuff is easy. Everyone can learn the technical part in maximum half a year. But gathering knowledge and somewhat trying to structure it for yourself - thats hard. Any art medium is hard enough that it is nice to have someone in your boat ( professors etc). Now the difference in plain photography BA and visual arts BA with major in photography i seriously doubt there are big differences. Atleast in photo BA you get a ton of art history, philosophy etc. the "photo" part is maybe half of your courses. And technical part is maybe only first semester. Rest is getting to know the different fields (documentary, portrait, studio). After graduating, if you start to work as an artist, nobody actually cares. I mean for most artists it only shows a "background". In contemporary art field everyone is mixed in the same pile and constantly switching mediums. It is perfectly ok to jump from photo to video to installations or mix all three for an exhibition. In your case i would just pick what i would either love to do or what i would love to know more about. Atleast that keeps you on track when things get hard ( if they get hard at all). edit: oh and you get feedback. Brutally honest feedback. But it is that nice tough love kind of feedback since most of your peers would love you to succeed. The moment you graduate you will be missing that honest feedback part. Since friends and family say your work is good anyway, and exibition reviews in newspapers ... well even a bad one is hard to get :) not even mentioning a good one or the rarest of them all - an objective one :D

Tomas Folan-Hasici I do fine art at UCA Canterbury and I really enjoy it there. I studied architecture at that uni for a term but wasn’t for me. I then moved to fine art as it is very broad and something I enjoy. I wish I did a course more ‘specialist’ but that’s something I can consider for masters

There's lots of different jobs within the creative industry. Fine art doesn't really set you up for any particular job at all, it will simply allow you to develop a studio practice where you can materialize different ideas. Start paying attention to social media marketing if you're interested in becoming an artist and promoting your artwork 😎

I was accepted in an university for Bachelors Degree in painting and for sketch-comics-cartoon in other one and I'm not sure where to go. I would love to do comics etc in the future but I'm worried about the value of the degrees. Is BA or MA more important for making a career in art?

Unfortunately I don't know much about the comic industry, but with any creative direction it seems like the most important thing is your portfolio and experience. If your drawing skills etc aren't up to scratch it doesn't matter what degree you're coming from etc. My advice would be do everything you can to get in touch with studios to understand what they look for (or a course that is very practical, not full of conceptual nonsense).
