My parents moved to the Island in the 1970s. My mother told me that early on she went into a shop in Ramsey and before she'd opened her mouth the assistant said "You're not from round here, are you?" My mother said "How did you know?" And the lady replied "You locked your car."
@basstrammel13223 жыл бұрын
That's the kinda place I love. I don't lock my door when I walk my dog, because, why? My hallway has two locked doors between it and the outside, so anyone getting to it is a non-issue. Still, everyone I know that's learned it is flabbergasted. As if burglars are constantly checking if your door is unlocked. Never locked my car either after the time i spent 3(!) days on thawing the frozen solid lock and gasket 10 years ago. I just refuse to succumb to that idea, and if I'm wrong I'll call my insurance.

I live in Ireland and decided to visit Isle of Man in 2016. It was a completely random decision, I was actually looking at map of Ireland to get any ideas of where to go on trip, and I noticed the island. I loved the 3 days that I spent there, and wished I had stayed for at least one more night. So many fun places for such a small island. After that, I often have dreams of Isle of Man to this day. It doesn't happen with other places that I travel. There's something curious about the island that makes me want to come back and explore more. Thanks for the video, it was an interesting watch.

I and my family spent 3 weeks on the IoM doing family history. Most of the peeps there were very kind but we did run into a few who were NOT. The car rental guy was a piece of work, and the Fam Hist center lady.... who will not be named.... was extremely rude to us on multiple occasions, as if we didn't have a right to be there searching out our ancestors. And then, we were chased down by some dude on the highway because apparently I didn't turn on my "indicator" (whatever THAT is, haha. Maybe it's my blinker?) while exiting a traffic circle. Not much tolerance for mistakes. But so many others were very nice, including our wonderful air bnb hosts and our church group, who were exceptionally kind to us. Thank you IoM lds ward! You made our stay so delightful. I look forward to going back again sometime!

I moved here from Jersey (prior to that Kent and London) back in 2007. Took a while to settle in and now live down south. Agree with your comments on the people ...northern friendliness. And agree, definitely a very, very safe to be; I have two kids ‘ teens who use the bus service between Douglas and the south often late at night and, thankfully no issues at all.

I would like to live on The isle of Man. There is the question of the money so I don't really think about the move and what I'm missing. I'm 70 years old and I lived most of my life an island named "Long", in the USA, NY. Long Island NY USA. Born there in fact. Raced my 1976 T140V Triumph Bonneville 750 on 25A, a road that is more like the TT roads @37 miles race than any I have ever rode upon, from East Northport to Port Jefferson (my birthplace) for 20 years and never lost. I see that time from 1976 to 1986 as the centerpiece of my life. I'm, with my wife now, living in Tuscumbia Alabama U.S.A. and yes I still have my beloved Triumph Bonneville. Riding is what I find something so very special in life. More than Philosophy, more than being a Warrior in battles between nations. The honor involved in Sport racing is very real, the skill required is immense and the faith in the Engineers and builders who made my Triumph and the love I have for my Triumph is so strong I still have it in me. She never wrecked, she never lost, she would never tolerate another wheel ahead of hers and she always got me home, kept me warm during the winter rides too. Could I live upon the Isle of Man, I would like to, and I would if ever given the opportunity. Would you get along with me? Well possibly, if you know how to set the valve clearance on a British two wheeled motor machine. Or if you like to play stringed instruments and to draw with charcoal and to paint with pure ground earth powdered pigments on wet fresh lime/plaster. - Peter E. Nelson October 23, 2020.

In Douglas ( where i live) you have a sport center ( NSC = National Sport Center )right next to McDonalds, which also has another Gym room for example, and you can also use your bycicle anywhere on the island in which some roads have specific lanes for bycicles only and people respect that and even slow down and drive like 15-20 mph when overtaking you , so you dont get scared and cause an accident :), so in regard of sport areas, its full :) Theres alot of people simply jogging everyday from morning to evening.
@chriscorlett30833 жыл бұрын
There are lots of sports catered for. Until recently my wife and I have organised xc mountain bike races. There are loads of single track trails all over the island. Each parish has football grounds plus hockey and cricket. Xc running and fell running are especially popular. If your good at a sport then there's a chance that you could be picked for the Island Games against other islands or even the Commonwealth Games.

It is a nice place to live for sure. I moved from Germany in 2018 after a long history of TT visits ( since 1985 ). But, it is a bit difficult to get work depence of your profession. I am a highly qualified electrician with over 20 years of experience (employed/ selfemployed), proven with verified documents. None of this is recognized here, I am classified here as "not qualified". No authorized authority takes the trouble to compare this qualification with the one required here. If these authorities / experts were to do this, they would have to come to the conclusion that I am far more qualified than required. Fortunately, I've found a company whose boss respects / recognizes my qualifications and pays me accordingly. But he only got a work permit for me as a "trainee". The authorities still refuse me a "Craftsman Card", which would identify me as the "Qualified electrician" that I am. I find that unfair. Nevertheless, there are no plans to leave the island again

I'm having trouble finding this answer so I'm hoping you can help. Does the Isle of Man have property tax?
@amadeusiom2 жыл бұрын
Depends what you mean. There is no stamp duty but other charges will apply. Instead of council tax we have rates.

@@amadeusiomLet's say I buy on house on the Isle of Man for 500K - will I need to pay a tax on it every year? In the States it's called property tax. Thank you so much for getting back with me, I really appreciate it. I've been trying to find the answer but now I'm thinking IOM has a different name for it.
@amadeusiom2 жыл бұрын
@@gabnsab it’s called Rates (or council tax in the UK) and the amount depends on where you are. www.douglas.gov.im/index.php/services/rates#.Yro-kKR4XDs

@@amadeusiom Thank you. I couldn't find the answer because I wasn't calling it the right name. It's very interesting that it is based on rental values from 1969.

Yes it will if too many people move here. Please don't come here and contribute to the possible sinking of our little rock.

Considering relocating from US early next year but we are retired in our 70's with a young granddaughter to raise and interested in Isle of Man since my great great grandfather came to the US from there in early 1800s. What about housing with availability to rent with an interest in cost--Can you convert pounds to $ for me relating to cost as well. Thanks, Anita Schultz
@amadeusiom4 жыл бұрын
Anita Schultz rent for a decent place here ranges from around £700 to £1000 a month plus electricity and gas and internet costs, so calculate at least £1000 or more a month or roughly $1300. There is cheaper but likely not nice. To buy calculate $250,000 for a decent house.

Dont you realize. The more people you encourage to move to the Island. The more it will change the place. More people means more houses. Means less of its beautiful countryside. Keep it to yourself.

People come and go.
@bad-girlbex37919 ай бұрын
Thank you for explaining this. I've been trying to discourage as many people as possible, but hopefully the cost will be prohibitive enough to keep enough people from trying to relocate here.

Can I get job in Isle of man
@AndyCaley10 ай бұрын
Yeah only problem is depends on what you do for work. If you have specific skills it's easier. You need a work permit for the first 5 years. It can be done tho. My partner originally from Liverpool. Worked in retail. She now assistant manager at the post office and has been here over 10 years. Now a manx citizen
@AndyCaley10 ай бұрын
The issue is that a company has to employ local unless there is not really anyone suitable for the job being offered. So they then maybe will be more willing to go for someone that needs a work permit
