I would also point out that 24mp against 50mp is the surface area, but does not mean half the size images, on the long side the A9iii is 6000 pixel and the A1 is 8640 px, so the A9iii image is 69% the size along the edge which is what matters when cropping. In real use I have found this makes little difference to image quality. I have come to the conclusion that the quality of the glass is far more important to image quality than how many million megapixels there is on the sensor.

People forget that usable images were obtained with 1 & 2 MP full frame cameras in the early days of DSLR's . Full frame is relating to the actual physical size of the sensor equivalent to 35mm film.🤔24.6 MP is more than enough, the sensor size for years of the top Cameras were 10-12 MP

Prime lenses are generally the way to go - F2.8 to f4. With the A9iii, the problem is that you will run out of pixels on a 24mp camera, depending on where you are in the world and what you are photographing.

Very tranquil scenes at the end with the deer and perfect music selection for it. Nice one Mark. You no longer have to convince me re the A9iii, I’ve just picked up a used one! I’ve been on the Canon Eos system since its intro around 1987 until end 2017. I used a 5Dii from 2008 until end of 2017 when I ‘semi’ jumped ship and got a Sony A7Riii at its launch, and adapted my Eos lenses to it. The A7Riii giving me an articulated LCD (in landscape orientation) and a much better AF. It also have me higher resolution, but i felt perfectly happy at the time with the 21mp’s at the time. The A7Riii has been great, but it has one trait that irritated me, the exp comp dial on the top right didn’t have a lock button and I’d accidentally bump it occasionally & not realise, oh, and that LCD only titled in one axis. The A9iii is a really interesting camera. Like many, I initially dismissed it. I’m not a Sports photographer covering the Olympics, I don’t need a global shutter & 24MP’s is no longer enough now is it? But then I thought more about it. I was perfectly content with 21mp in the past & if truth be know, I seldom fully exploited the 42mp of the A7R3 (or the 50mp of my GFX 50R). I do ‘get’ how for wildlife, when you are focal length limited, the higher resolution cameras permit greater options for cropping in, but I’m not a 100% wildlife shooter. The things that attracted me to the A9iii are: the lock on the top right edge dial, the fully articulated LCD, the considerable AF improvements….all of which I would have got with an upgrade to the A7RV - and I had been looking at going in that direction. In addition to these items common with the A7RV, the A9iii also offers the pre-capture, which I perceive as a ‘biggie’. It’s an enabler to capture shots that you would otherwise miss with the A7RV ( & most other cameras), as is the crazy high FPS shooting. Because I use multiple camera systems, it means I tend to use Sony when I specifically need fast & reliable AF, long lenses & stabilisation…..so if I’m head out to shoot subjects like sports, air shows or wildlife typically. Therefore, it makes sense to me to ‘optimise’ my Sony setup more in this direction. The Canon 5D2 was a general purpose camera for me. Compare that to the A9iii, and it’s clear that the A9iii could easily be used as an all round camera too, as it beats the 5D2 is every aspect I can think of. I’ve not shot with the A9iii yet, still in the ‘learning menus & customisation set up’ stage, but looking forward to getting out and using the A9iii in anger. Exciting times, exciting indeed.

Well congratulations I don't think you will be disappointed . It is tempting to say you will never miss another shot. But that will now be down to human error. It is quite a learning curve especially Pre Capture if you have never used it before. It is not surprising that it took me so long to get it, there was and still is, a lot of negativity on the A9III, but when you actually have one it is a different matter. Please let me know how you get on in the field ?

@@CamillaI thanks Mark! Learning how best to customise the A9iii certainly takes time and learning! But I am looking forward to this new challenge! Not sure how best to keep you updated on my findings, I guess dropping in comments on your videos like this one!

I have the A9 iii and the A1 but 9 times out of 10 when I go out it’s the A9ii I pick up . I to have found my photography is improved with the A3 and when it’s paired with the 300mm and converters it’s an absolutely stunning combination and very flexible.

I still can't believe this is true. I have to pinch myself everytime I use the A9III. My only regret I didn't get it six months earlier . I did save £1000 though so some compensation Castle Cameras had a couple going cheap

Very valid points from you and others. I do not disagree...to a point. I have both cameras and the 300mm f2.8 and 600mm f4 and the only weakness I can find with the A9iii is resolution. Pixels are your friend as a bird in flight photographer here in the UK. I still attach my A1 to my best lenses as generally, I cannot get close enough to wild birds to make the A9iii work for me. I submit to commercial agencies. DXO is a game changer and can make any camera look good, let's be honest. If I could have the A9iii with 40-50mp...boy, I'd be one happy bird photographer. At the end of the day, with bird photography, in the UK, pixels matter. PS - You forgot to mention other strengths of the A9iii - it's colours are terrific, unlike the A1, which can be dodgy and drives me crazy, and also the customisable focus areas...absolutely brilliant. I have used the A9iii very successfully for insects in flight and obtained images impossible with the A1 😞

Yes I have used the customisable focus box to good effect with dragonflies in flight. Not sure anyone would recognise that feature unless they owned a A9III. But the Colours are definitely worth a mention especially video straight out of the gate . Good point reason 6 for sure 👌👍 Getting shots the A1 would not have captured is my main benefit. It doesn't matter how many pixels you have if you don't have the image in the first place . But I am surprised by the amount I can crop with the A9III. 24.6 FF MP 6000 by 4000 Pixels is still a lot of real estate on a 35mm film equivalent

For me it’s the AF performance and the pre-capture feature. But I still use the a1 from time to time.

There are situations where the A1 is still the Sony champion 👍

Very nice camera's agree but at 71 the cost is too much plus I wouldn't use half the things it can do, I have gone back to Canon 7D/7DMK2, great video Mark..

Thanks, its not all about the camera. You have to have the fieldcraft too, which hopefully I demonstrated in this video

I could too, but I prefer the A9III having used it for a few months now . Waiting for the A1 2 would be my first reason to stay with the A1and not spend 5.5k on another camera

@@sjm.photos Not many people need the A1 but I think you would appreciate the A9III more than you think . Especially with your appreciation of speed . But it is not for everyone and how many cameras can you own at once

Ya, I already have to crop more than want to most of the time shooting at 500mm. (If I step up to Nikon mirrorless, probably getthe 800 PH) Besides, if you can't get enough keepers (like 80%) with the A9II or A1, you need help/training from a pro. One thing positive I can say about getting the A9III is it should make you a better wildlife photographer in the fact that you will need to perfect the art of getting up close. I only shoot a 33mp camera but will say, the closer the better (200-500mm) with the exception of being too close that 1-2% of the time to get the whole subject in frame. Anyway, I wish I could afford one of everything so I could test out the Canon's, Sony's, OM's & Nikon's newest offerings before pulling the trigger. What ever you shoot, may your days out be filled with abundant action packed wildlife & your photos in focus with clean backgrounds!
