Great video. I’m almost 30. Bought my first bike 3 weeks ago. ‘09 GSX-R600 with ~12,xxx miles on it. I’ve wanted a bike since I was in high school. Over the last two years I’ve talked extensively with a family member about bikes. In the last 6 months it became a lot more serious of a possibility. It’s important to take your time. Every single time I get on the bike I have a whole checklist of things to do from making sure I’m wearing my gear properly. Making sure the bolts on the bike are tightened. Checking to make sure I’m in C mode. Once I actually get on the bike I take it somewhere to do slow speed maneuvers until I’m a little warmed up. Starting and stopping and figure 8’s - motojitsu and dandanthefireman stuff. Then I ride a few short loops around the neighborhood. Come back do low speed stuff and get back to the loops again. Consume content on riding, watch crash videos, technique videos, practice it, try to focus on a couple techniques that I’m struggling with each time i go out. In 3 weeks I already feel extremely comfortable just because of how methodical and diligent and slow I’m taking it. Whether on a dirt bike, supersport, or cruiser riding is a skill you want to take your time to develop. There’s no rush. Being patient and taking your time to learn and practicing allows you to develop the skill. Which matters far more than what bike you get on.

@@jimrhea5484 start on light dirt bike if at all possible safer to learn no traffic or poles and curbs to die on. Take road racing intro class first. No need to mod bike before getting skillsto fully use stock power and handling. Newer bikes better more capable than 99% of the riders on them. Seen so called good riders on 1000 cc bikes on track on track days and I termediate racer on 4p0 twin ninja smoke them. Skills make you faster and safer than tons of power. Fact is and some will argue but it is fact new 1000cc sportbike stock is more bike than 99.5% of owners. Adding power jyst means you die faster. Top racers can lap a stock 600 faster than the 1000cc rides, power is not issue skull is, so get as much as you can from race classes, you will be much faster on same bike

@ Of course bro! & that’s also extremely true, we’re all guilty of it from time to time. You know, the casual “I’m just going here to there, or I’m not gonna be doing any heavy riding today, I’m just gonna chill & cruise” yet none of us can see the future. It’s foolish, but at the same time it’s a saying that will save you as much as possible every….single….time…. The one time I made the mistake of being “that idiot” & wearing what I shouldn’t have had on, & I’m embarrassed to say this..“shorts & a white tee & tennis’s shoes.”😑 It was a nice hot summer day. I was going to work & thought, by the time I get off tonight, I’ll be kinda tired, & it will still be 70-80 degrees, I don’t need to gear up. I was a dish washer at that time, this was like 7 years ago & it ended up being the night I went down, due to trying to avoid a deer coming up on a curve. . Never again. A lot of people will definitely be thankful for this video, especially the new guys just getting into the game. Keep killing it bro!!!💪🏽

I bought my first bike, a Ninja 400, just this past May. I rode it a little bit before I could snag an MSF slot, and in those couple weeks I target fixated around a small bend nearby and drove off the road into a ditch. Thankfully I just coasted into it and it was all grass. I also slid the bike in August on a really short, quick trip to the gas station. Had my riding pants in the laundry and it shred my jeans, skinning my knee and deeply bruising my thigh. I took a skid on my forearm too but it wasn't so bad. It was a combination of rough road condition, tight corner, and a little too fast (~20 mph). I've learned a lot and thankfully my frame sliders protected the bike. Excited to hit the roads this coming year regardless 💪

We gotta learn from our mistakes, I got my first bike in April of 2024 a ninja 500 SE. During the first few weeks I was waiting on a stop light inside a parking lot and I didn't notice a bunch of dirt and little pebbles and rocks (a patch of gravel?) and my boot slipped and I dropped the bike, frame slider protected the bike, felt so stupid tho cuz I was literally not moving, but it didn't discouraged me, I learned from my mistake. Still needs lots to learn and I keep practicing as much as I can. Atgatt!!!

And really, the numbers to pay more attention to are the horsepower, and not the displacement. A Ninja 650 technically has a higher displacement than a Ninja ZX6R, but the 650 makes 68hp, and the ZX6R makes nearly 130hp.

Might be unpopular but to avoid target fixation you'll have to go through it someday. I don't think it's something you can study out of having it but rather have the experience of knowing what to do when it happens. You'll eventually learn that if you panic you are royally fucked so just trust yourself and the bike and just lean or go where you wanna go.

Great advice and some solid points! One thing funny thing I noticed with a lot of motorcycle accidents and mishaps is that majority of the time the motorcycle rider plays victim and tries to throw the blame on someone else but in reality they were the ones either speeding or doing something stupid. Speeding is the leading cause of motorcycle accidents and the most important thing to recognize if you want to stay safe. P.S. love the pics @ 6:26 and 6:57

Run your hand across the rear tyre profile, if it's worn out of shape, leave those top speed tests till it's sorted. Don't take my word for it, Check the rear tyre condition after a tank slap, chain tension is a factor but less critical. Swing arm bearings and front wheel bearings are next up. If the bike is tip top it can still be operator error. Agree with everything here, but all the gear doesn't make you iron man.

1 buying more bike than you can handle. 2 not having good basic skills before riding on streets. 3 modding a bike you cannot handle stock. 4 tryi g to show off. 5 not wearing full gear on every ride. 6 buying first bike for street, learn on dirtbike they are lighter can crash with minimal damage and you will not get killed in dirt as easy as on street. Wisdom from 50 yrs riding starting at 6 on yamaha 60, being g goid rider before ever getting near traffic saved me many times. Riding should be instinct before getting near a street bike. But do as you like it is ypur funeral

The biggest mistake rookies make is thinking they are qualified to make rookie mistake videos. This clown's shoe laces make big graceful loops waiting to catch his foot pegs when he stops at a light preventing him from puttying a foot down. He'' tell his friends later "I had to lay her down".
