Old superstitions like the door knocking thing are fascinating to me. One my mom always mentions, that’s pretty much the same as the one you mentioned, is that if you have a dream about someone having a baby, someone is gonna die (spooky coincidence, but my own mom had just that experience - she dreamt she went through the entire birthing process, had a baby, then woke up… next day her aunt died); then the opposite goes as well - you have a dream about someone dying, someone is gonna have a baby. One that I just now learned about, and this is still practiced by people that live over here in the Appalachian mountains, is that people will paint the tops of their porch roofs blue. They believe this will keep the “haints” (or “haunts”, spirits, etc.), out of their homes.

What you said about the dreams with babies is interesting, in my case I dreamt 3 times that I was pregnant and soon later 3 of my friends told me they were expecting a child. The fourth time I dreamt I was pregnant nothing happened but everytime I was having that dream and woke up I just felt horrible. But I think that's just me because the last thing I want in this world is having children 😅

Ahhh haints, there's a word I've not heard in a long while. If you're interested in this sort of thing, a lot of the hillfolk stories and "myths" originate in Scotch-Irish and Germanic folklore. It's a pleasure to meet you, be safe down there in the mountains. I miss them so.

Yes! I remember learning about that. And brooms outside on the porch in front of the door will trap the spirits in the bristles before they can escape at dawn. I’ve also heard blue doors keep demons away, but idk if that’s part of the Scotch-Irish/Germanic folklore. Love those little superstitions.

@@thespectralsociety4888 I am remembering this incorrectly most likely, buuuut I do vaguely recall someone saying (and let's face it, that's what folklore IS) that the blue would trick "them" into thinking it was the blue sky and therefore they'd ignore it. Not avoid it, ignore it. So with MadGamer's talk about the porch overhang and your's about the door, ALLLLL of that comes from very old Gaelic tales about "the Fair Folk," and a lot of that has continued. Gosh it's so nice to meet you Ash, your font is incredible. If any of you want to read a deeper explanation, here's a deep dive! Otherwise, thank you so much for reading at all and I wish you guys a happy New Year! Ok "Gaelic" can cover nearly everything from isolated woodlands/mountains mainland Europe of 3000 years ago (and more) to their more isolated outposts in southwestern Spain, intermingling with the Norse, and of course north/northwestern Great Britain. In a lot of Gaelic lore, the "Fair Folk" (we call them that out of respect because um... we're not supposed to talk bad about them *knocks on her oak desk and throws something over her shoulder, crap she hopes that was salt she doesn't get paid till next week afte----* otherwise they can intentionally make your life hellish. Left a cup of milk or cream on the deck overnight "for the neighborhood cats?" That was actually so the Fair Folk would leave you alone) are mentioned as beings who were very particularly aware and fond of "borders/boundaries." Ever heard in the South that you shouldn't stop a crossroads near sunset or midnight? Might meet the Devil? Ever hear how a field boundary to woodland is a dangerous place to be at all, but especially at dusk? ALL of those come from the belief that the Fair Folk (ok I'm sorry *throws more cocaii------ SALT, she means salt* but you probably know them as the Fae, or fairy faeries... you may also perhaps notice similarities to older forms such as aelfinne and "elfin" or... elvish) are VERY powerful at "boundaries" and can pull you into their realm. And they rule a realm right next to ours, and seduce the unwary with songs and dance and unbelievable beauty. As soon as you agree/advance/eat/or-open-your-dang-door, YOU gave them free reign to do as they please. If you're lucky they'll just drain you of your lifeforce or wealth or anything that amuses them at the time and leave you. If you're lucky. Speaking of, horseshoes, being wrought-iron, are "lucky." These Fair Folk are in many stories very averse towards iron and electricity (OH yes, why do you think the stories lasted so long in Appalachia? My parents didn't know the Great Depression had even happened until the early 80s)... (....I'm teasing but still.) Ok everyone it's New Year's Eve as I write this and I'm very tipsy so I apologize and will shush now. I just highly recommend if you're interested in ANY of this, research all you can online and ASK your local libraries to track down books for you (it's surprising to a lot of folk, but most of them will do that for you. It adds to their inventory and ultimately shouldn't cost YOU anything unless you're a bloody thief you raker you). For my Appalachian brothers and sisters I HIGHLY recommend Horace Kephart's "Our Southern Highlanders," he helped get the Great Smokey Mountains turned into a National Park, and although the book is a hundred years old it's an incredible record of real people. ...as an aside, it interests me that "finn" "djinn" are VERY old old world terms, but "fae" "veil" (boundary) are more modern... and the Iroquois nation including the Cherokee spoke of small beings that ruled a realm unseen that ruled the boundaries of land, water, and man. Best wishes you absolute scholars if you read my nonsense, thank you kindly. Just think, you could've spent several minutes reading dozens of youtube comments and you wasted them on mine alone... Personally, I'm not only touched I'm glad. If you cared about the topic, now you have some platform to spring off of in your research. Maybe a touch of heritage. And *I* desperately hope to learn more from *you* if you're not busy sometime. I absorb everything I can learn from everything around me, but you few people here who've commented in Mad Gamer's thread? I wouldn't have met you otherwise. So that's very special *smiles warmly* Happy New Year everyone. Be safe. *PS* As a woodsgirl and former hunter/trapper, all water and woodland boundaries are terrible places to visit at ANY time if you're trying to find food, because every animal is most cautious in those places. Our ancient woodland ancestors would've been aware of that, and maybe that's where some of the legends come from? :D Or maybe "old Finn" (in some places a name for the Devil himself) is someone who likes those places too............ dot... dot...

the first one reminded me of this skit i watched a few years ago, so basically, there was a girl in her bedroom. pretty sure top floor. and her dad called her and said something like this "look out your window and DO NOT take your eyes off him. got it?" the daughter looked out her window and gasped. she looked at the "Man". "he" had a tuxedo on, a bag around his head with chains on. she learned if she looks away, "he" gets closer. so she quickly looked away and grabbed siccors, when she turns back, the "man" was right in front of her. she gasped. tried to take of the bag and chains, but when she did...... she's dead... I’m Romanian, from Transylvania no less. I’ve been paintballing in Hoia Baciu several times and I also practice archery there. It’s a creepy forest, without a doubt, and the story of the girl disappearing and coming out of the forest years later without ageing reminds of the Irish, Scottish, and Scandinavian stories of the “fair folk” taking people to their realm for what only seems like a few hours or a day to them, but loads of time had passed in the human realm. However, I think the storied of disappearances, especially the shepherd and his flock, can probably be put down to wolves or bears. If you trek into the forest and sit quietly, you’ll see lovely wildlife, including lynx or a brown bear if you’re lucky. There’s lots of bats too, so be careful you don’t get bitten

My grandmother was visiting me and my husband for a couple of weeks (a long time ago)…anyway, she woke us up in the middle of the night saying someone was knocking on the door. My husband got up to check but there was no one there. My grandmother said “someone back home is going to die”. My husband just laughed and said that was ridiculous. Early the next morning after my husband had left for work I got a call from his mother saying his grandmother had passed away in the middle of the night. Needless to say, he never laughed at any of her superstitious ways again, it really freaked him out.

Excellent and entertaining as always. I think I can shed some light on the last videos. You mentioned you didn't know why they were recording the new house. But I think it was mentioned that the sister was recording at the old house. The lady in that clip is telling the boy that he needs to get his things because they're going to the other house (presumably the new house they moved to) and that they were going to have breakfast there. I'm assuming the sister was recording because she knows things go down there at the old place.
