Michigan doesn't need a quarterback like the rest of these teams do to function. If you can get orji around 65% passing Mixing some RPO along with Mullins running the ball. Can you imagine trying to stop them two.😂 Can you imagine a corner trying to tackle orji who's the size of a linebacker. Because the defensive end is going to have to squeeze down to stop the running back . That will leave orji 1on1 with a corner most likely I can see him running over a corner. Even if Jaden Denegal won the position they can most certainly bring orji in the game and use him. Not only that but design simple slant routes for the quarterback to complete. We don't need much from the quarterback position I thought we've proved that to people over the years. If anything we might be even harder to stop on offense.

One very underrated aspect of JJ that isn’t mentioned enough vis a vis his replacement is his ability to protect the ball. Outside of the one Bowling Green game and the sole brain fart throw against Bama early, he really never put the ball in jeopardy. I like Orji but I don’t know yet whether he has the poise to not throw the ball when the play isn’t there.
@dzack027 ай бұрын
Or how about, can he throw the ball at all?
@DeshCanter7 ай бұрын
@@dzack02 Give a little credit to Harbaugh and his staff. If he couldn’t throw at all he wouldn’t have been recruited. Milton had all the same criticism thrown at him, and he had a pretty good career at Tennessee. I suspect Orji could be very effective in Michigan’s system once he gets some reps and doesn’t try to be Patrick Mahomes on every play. The beauty of Michigan’s system is that it isn’t all that QB-centric, so whoever the starter is should be fine.
@dzack027 ай бұрын
@@DeshCanter He never "Patrick Mahomes" anything .. he was put in the game to run the ball like a RB. He wasn't trusted to throw the ball like JJ was his freshman season. Joe Milton was not very good at Michigan or Tennessee. Come on now. Imo, Orji will never be the starter at UM.

Tuttle is that experienced vet QB who is a system manager, so dont need to go to the transfer portal. UM will let Donegal and Orgi share duties like Cade McNamara and JJ McCarthy in 2021. If either or both D ont pan out ( yet) ,Tuttle is going to be more than an insurance policy. He might surprise by being a starter. For now Orgi = 40 % chance to get the nod. Donegal 33 % and Tuttle at 27 % but only because he will not be present in the Spring game as he recovers.

Love the input here - lots of good takes as always. The thing that is slightly off-base for me is the assumption our run game will still be rolling. O-line aside, we have Edwards slated at #1 despite a very inconsistent career overall and (at times) very poor ball-carrying vision. I don't think anyone would take away from his talent/drive/attitude/catching ability/big play ability. After Edwards we are looking at some unproven guys - think back to the pre-Harbaugh days where we would get a few solid backs in and they would still be missing that magical something. 2 (conversational) cents from a humble Michigan fan. I'm excited for the season and cannot wait for week 2! #GOBLUE

Yikes, the dude harping on Patterson. Shea was a major upgrade vs what we had in 2017. But Michigan didn't technically have an OC in 2018, Pep Hamilton clearly wasn't fully bought into Harbaugh's run first mentality. There was what appeared to be a clash of philosophies, so Pep started kind of phoning it in whenever Harbsugh demanded they run. Just straight up the gut, no creative blocking schemes. He'd get questioned on it at one point and he'd just say "It's what Jim wants to do." That's when I knew Pep was done. Then Gattis gets brought in, and Shea now has to adapt to his third offensive system in as many years. Gattis has some decent schemes, but as a first time co-ordinator, he seemed to struggle to get everyone to buy in and play cohesively. Sure, Shea got worse at throwing the deep ball, but he otherwise was solid. Great mobility, could throw darts in the short and intermediate passing game. Shea and Co. Put up decent points in most every game they played. The reason why they lost big games was due to the rest of college football catching onto how to exploit Don Brown's defense more than anything... Michigan fixed its defense, and that was really the biggest reason for their turnaround than anything. Which is why I was rather miffed that Gattis got the Broyles award in 2021. Mike McDonald was more deserving. Hell, Gattis' own schematics were reduced in importance in favor of being more run heavy. The run game's increase in effectiveness came thanks to the excellent o line play from Sherrone Moore's coaching and Mike Hart coming in as RB coach more than Gattis having that much to do with it. And the reason Michigan finally got over the Ohio State hump was for sure more down to defense than anything. Sure, we put up 42 points that year, we also put up high 30s on them in 2018 before Gattis arrived. The biggest difference came in the defense points allowed. Went from them being able to hang 50 and even more than 60 points on us to holding them to under 30. That Ravens defense was the biggest game-changer for Michigan's recent success than anything we've had to offer on offense. The offense has been consistently decent under Harbaugh no matter who is co-ordinating. Very rarely is it anything earth-shattering. But playing out of your mind on offense isn't needed if you can dominate time of possession, minimize offensive turnovers and have a defense that can cook.
@EnzoMoresi-mj8bc6 ай бұрын

How can you recruit at 13th or where ever Michigan’s recruited the last four years and win a national title, that’s why he brings up you got to go to the transfer portal you lost some Players. Keon Sabb is the only notable player they lost in the transfer portal Michigan haters think about this just for a moment. Michigan won a national title by basically running Blake Corum up the middle into a loaded box that was the corner stone of their offense it’s really remarkable that’s why I’m not saying they’re the best team of the last 20 years in college football but this national championship is one of the most remarkable when you really look at how they did it.

Michigan Wolverines Football Team 145 up! All ive heard is Michigan won't be any good because of the record number of players to the NFL Combine. That happened because of culture, chemistry, hard work, and coaching. The same is there still. The defensively, Michigan has the number 1 defense in the Big 10. Possibly the nation. Now, Coach Wink hire was huge, and the big reason is Coach Moore, being an offensive coach, can focus on the offense. The hires by Coach Moore was brilliant and that will reflect when the defense takes the field. Offensively, the offensive line Michigan has are mostly Jr's and seniors that have been in the system for 3 years. People also forget that is true for these QBs as well. Are they McCarthy caliber? Possibly. We will soon find out but the positive is that these guys have been in the system for 3 years and know besides Davis who will red shirt. Orji, Denegal, or Warren can start however I foresee that Michigan ,will again, reach into the portal. I believe the recruiting will improve, the team will improve and the coaches will make sure they are prepared. Oleary, English, DJ Waller Jr, Barham, and many others are going to surprise people. The portal will be the key once again. Especially now that players know who the coaches are and the standard Michigan has set.

TX and GA returning starters big advantage - after that - who is PROVEN - returning - on a top ten team? Wide open 2024 - good thing for MICH JH isn’t coaching the OSU backfield and Minter its D. But STILL OSU going to be toughest test and a Natty Norm. I like 15/17 Tuttle with heavy dose of JJ like Orji packages - surgery - going to be a big setback. Spring game really going to matter. Maybe one surprises like Hendon Hooker🤞.

What spring football are you talking about? A QB? You have no coaching staff! I love how Bo said no man is more important than the team.... no coach is more important than the team until jimmy!

@TY9941_7 ай бұрын
Love the show but Steve you desperately need to change the intro video. Its old, outdated, and looks like a 12 year old put it together in 5 minutes. Do you even have a highlight from the 20s - aka the best era in Michigan football history? If you do this, you will have 50k subscribers minimum.
@toddb55377 ай бұрын
Bro cmon Steve saying that your team is "not a QB driven program" is stupid. So yall coukd have put in ANY back up an still won the Natty an beat OSU?? Lol!! Cmon man be real!!! Ya can't have it both ways. You cant say JJ is best QB ever in y'alls history then say he didnt matter any QB on roster coukd have done what he did!!
@scottsponaas7 ай бұрын
What are you even talking about? The defense and run game is what drove this team. What you just said here is totally incoherent. It does not logically follow that because Steve said Michigan is “not a QB dependent program” that he was saying that JJ didn’t matter at all or that a backup could have won it all. 🤦🏻♂️That’s called a straw man. Just look at 2021. Michigan got into the playoffs with Cade MacNamara who is underwhelming at best. Who did we lean on for the Penn State win this year? The running backs. Who won The Game(for the third straight year)? The defense. Who drove the program to the national title? The running game and the defense. That’s what drives the program. The fact that McCarthy made some amazing plays does not change that. When McCarthy was held in check, the team still won by running the ball and stopping their opponent.
@timdepaulis24876 ай бұрын
We beat OSU with McNamara. Our program needs an elite QB to win the championship but it’s not depended on it to at the very least compete for a national championship.

Sherrone* Maize*. Recruits well, developed back to back Joe Moore award winning O-lines. Already has wins over Penn State, Maryland and Ohio State as interim head coach. You're somehow amazed at how confident they are in him? Especially after Jim Harbaughs endorsement of him? Be a skeptic and take a wait and see approach if you will, but to be negative and assert yea it won't go well is a very idiotic take from a so called "fan".

Not it's not u guys have a whole new offensive line starting wise quarter back gon running back gone head coach offensive coordinator defensive coordinator gone strength coach gone the only reason your players arnt gone yet is because Jim wanted to long to announce he was leaving so they missed the portal window for early sing ups yall are going to be garbage

Michigan athletics has lost its way. It lost its integrity. Whether the Staff knew about Stallions or not, the program will soon be punished for those decisions that were made. It will be interesting to see how the program rebuilds. I’ll be watching.

Don Brown only had issues 2 games a year maybe 1. He had a top 5 defense every year. His system works perfectly ONLY IF HE HAD THE PERSONNEL. He had most. Maybe 7 to 9 but not all 11 for his system to work against more elite team's. The man didn't become suddenly dumb and some of the recruiting was an issue too. He needed to adapt better to stop crossing routes and didn't do it. Had he done that he might still be at Michigan.
