Disagree with almost the entire list, except for the long walk. That was always my favorite forever growing up. Read that thing like five times. Rare--well, old Stephen King used to do sci-fi short storys--foray into science fiction genre for Stephen King. Although, I guess technically, all of his stories kind of contain an element of Science Fiction (or supernatural,which is basically the same thing). Speaking of, The Jaunt short story of his is another one of my favorites, also scifi... Hell I don't know what I was talking about with the Syfy comment earlier, cuz what I might consider my favorite book of his nowadays would be 11/22/63, a time travel story, aka the most genre specific quintessential science-fiction subgenre of all time. Pet Sematary might be what I would consider his most literary, not just for pure entertainment purposes, book. Lot of thematic elements about life and rebirth that are executed very well by King in that book. Dark Tower - - I've read the seven books of what would be considered the original "septilogy" a combined total of 18 times. Only thing that I would like to say about those books is that every single one of them is better than the one that was written previously. So, the first one's the worst one, The Drawing of the Three is the second not goodest, and the best one's the last one. It's crazy how that worked out, but it is so true if you read them. Green Mile, The Langoliers, Apt Pupil, Hearts in Atlantis. Couple of deep cuts there. The eyes of the Dragon was probably my favorite for a long time in grade school. I read that I don't even know how many times. It's really great fantasy, and that's coming from a guy who's not really that big on fantasy. The Stand is his most overrated work in my opinion. I read it twice, once as a fairly wee youngling and then once more recently and its still not that captivating to me. I like Dolores Claiborne infinitely more than The Stand.

There is just something about Stephen King; he allows you to completely immerse yourself into that world. My favourite is definitely The Shining. Complete eye opener for alcoholism and family tragedy. I personally couldn't get in to The Firestarter. I don't know what it was but I just couldn't do it. I tried about six years ago now so maybe I will give it another go!
@marlasinger69897 жыл бұрын
Firestarter is the only horror movie/ novel that gave me recurring nightmares for years. Paranoid shit about government conspiracies and CIA dudes stalking me and having nowhere to hide... My other recurring nightmares are usually about my teeth falling out, or not having done a term paper that's due, or car accidents... mundane shit... That something managed to tap into my psyche to that extent says VOLUMES.

My favorite Stephen King book, so far, is 11/22/63. I read it in the beginning of this month and just loved the overall story. It did not feel like 800 pages when I was reading; there was nothing I found bad about this book. It was like this epic historical fiction/time-travel/thriller. The Shining and Misery are close. My first Stephen King book was last year after I watched him giving a lecture at a university. He talked about his new book at the time 11-22-63. Never been interested in reading his books but since have read (audiobooks suit me best) listened to many of them. Don't like sci if or paranormal stuff but this book was fantastic. Also great to listen to his "on writing" audiobook which he tells his beginning as a writer and his motivations, interesting hints about what to write or not if you are a budding author.

Loved the first for Dark Tower books, but the last three were really bad imho. They had their moments for ex the old man with the kidnapped child in his basement that tried to kill Roland in the last book. He was the same type of monster as pennywise. I thought that was kinda cool. Despite being like 700 pages each. They felt very rushed. As if he wanted to get them out and get it over with.

Never really read Stephen King, this top 5 video has made me legitimately want to read all of his stuff. If a majority of other characters are mentioned in the dark tower, what books should I read before hand, so I understand the references?
@MoreMoreOrange10 жыл бұрын
***** Honestly you pretty much have to read everything in his bibliography to catch every reference in The Dark Tower. Just read it whenever you want to and don't worry about the references. They aren't overly important to the overall storyline. Probably the most prominent character that makes an appearance is one from Salem's Lot. So maybe read Salem's Lot. (It's kind of a vampire story, very good) Then just crack on with TDT. Usually I suggest reading TDT before reading everything else or read everything else then TDT. Your pick. (Liam just started reading King's work and he went with TDT very early!) You won't miss out on anything by reading TDT without reading anything else. Hard to explain. Go for it however you wish. I cannot advise very well. lol

One Stephen King book that I absolutely loved, and feel is fairly underrated, is Dolores Claiborne. Its one of those King books that gripped me in tight and I just kept reading until I finished the book in about 4 or so days. Definitely recommended, its also a really powerful and emotional story, and the way he writes it from the perspective of the main character just makes the development and story that much better. Great video, by the way!

Ran across this today, and being a big Stephen King fan, couldn't resist. Top 5 for me: 5) The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon - Just a great story and the usual King wonderful prose. You can read it in one sitting. 4) IT - Great "big-bad", well paced, and keeps tabs on folks after years of being apart to come back and confront the childhood fears as adults. 3) Delores Claiborne - In no way a horror story, but a nice tale, an easy read, and one of those that actually made a really decent movie if you haven't seen it (starring Kathy Bates, by the way, coming up.) 2) Misery - Just freaking scary as crap. Also made a great movie with the aforementioned Kathy Bates, and for which she won an Oscar. 1) The Stand - I'm considerably older than you, so I read this when it originally came out in 1978 as I was transitioning high school to college. This is the one I have read again and again over the years. I had the original version (actual still do in tattered paperback) and bought the extended version (with an additional 300-ish pages) in hardcover. Just a great book. Kind of lame TV mini-series when that was made, but I can always go back to the source material. If you enjoyed The Talisman, I would recommend to you a book by Peter Straub, Ghost Story. Read the book (please!) before finding the 80's movie that was based on it, as it was not particularly good. As usual, the book is far better than the movie. Favorite movie based on a Stephen King book is and always has been the Kubrik version of The Shining. That would be number 6 on my list of novels if I could extend it, but it is by far my favorite film derived from King's catalog. Ironically, Stephen King apparently never really liked that treatment. It was way different than the book, so I suppose I understand his misgivings, but for me it was a great film. Thanks for the post.

MoreMoreOrange I'd Start with Under The Dome, Needful Things or Salem's Lot. No reason, other than those are perhaps my 3 favorites, but I've read most of his work, and love his books!!

I love Stephen King! I haven't read a lot yet so I don't know which one is my favorite? I've read Pet Sematary, Revival, Doctor Sleep, and I'm starting The Talisman and Salems' Lot.

If you've read Doctor Sleep, let The Shining be your next one. It's way scarier

I'm so impressed you haven't cried since you were 20. I cry like twice a week - any emotional scene in a movie or book whether happy or sad will get me. I watched Tangled with my 3 year old niece the other day and SHE had to comfort ME. Top 5 places/cities you've visited?

I was about thirteen when I picked up my first King book. "IT" was my favorite movie (still is) and when I saw this book at my neighbors yard sale I wanted to see how much different the movie was from it. The first portion of it, that covers the death of Adrian Mellon, was so radically different from what I had known and loved from the movie, that I put the book down for over a year. I don't know what possessed me to pick it back up again, but I did, and I have loved it ever since. It's definitely my number one. Also, that web you were talking about, I get all excited and giddy when I read something that correlates with another portion of the Kingverse. Same goes with the movies. I live for it!

From what I've read my favourites are probably 1)The Long Walk 2)Pet Semetary 3)The Stand 4)It 5)Misery Honourable mention to The Dead Zone However I think his short stories and novellas are arguably his best work

Rebecca W. best place to find older king books is garage sales or goodwill stores. I have sooo many from these places. Also antique shops too.

Luke Gartland 11.22.63 very nearly made it onto the list. Love it. Particularly the style of time travel, very original. Haven't read Mr. Mercedes yet! So don't know! :D
