It doesn't matter if it was a train wreck it's the effort that makes the difference and the experience of knowing what you're doing wrong

Good on you for being honest about your performance. We've all had matches where something was just off- those cuts don't always make the fancy match videos. You're making lemonade by posting this and that is admirable.

My first Nationals (Open Nationals 2007) was a huge train wreck on my part and frustrating. I had to let it go and just embrace the experience. Once I did that I had a huge amount of fun. I learned a LOT and it made me better. Good on ya for making the most of the experience.

Myles, it takes real virtue to post your mistakes like this. I found the channel a little while ago and always learn from you. You have a real heart to help others and I've learned a lot of good things from you (and everyone on the channel). Keep 'em coming and with your great attitude, you'll definitely see better results in the future. Thank you for all you do for the community. You're a real credit to it!!!

I hope you take a minute to read my comments. I have been involved in firearms for 2 years. I take lessons once a month and practice weekly. Your videos have been a significant part of my training and success. I learn so much from your videos whether it’s you presenting or one of your team members. The element I appreciate most is that you put your skill out there for all of us to see. You have great technique and a strong work ethic. I learn as much, if not more, through your “mistakes.” It shows us all that whatever level we are at, there is always room for improvement. Thank you for your humility and great KZbin site. Keep up the good work. Look forward to your next competition.

Nothing personal but it makes me feel better to know someone else has the same problems I have had. I worked on my m&p the night before a competition and I didn't put rounds through it to verify operation. I ended up having to use my P89! My mental is mismanagement lol

All great learning points...for you and for everyone watching this video! This is why competition shooting can really help make anyone a better shooter, regardless if you shoot for fun or if you have a job where your life depends on your shooting abilities (i.e. LEO or military). Putting yourself on the clock in a competition will show where your skills are weak and where you need to focus training and practice. It also highlights the importance of shooting fundamentals (grip, trigger control, sight alignment). You also found out with those targets marked with partial hardcover, what most high level shooters now preach, which is that you need to pick a specific spot to aim on each target as just aiming at the target will not deliver the accuracy needed! Good stuff...always enjoy your videos...keep up the good work!

I did my first USPSA match last weekend and loved it. Many many learning lessons as well. I'm hooked! I went into it knowing it was going to be a good experience and I really focused on relaxing and just enjoying the fun experience. Keeping expectations down and looking at as a learning opportunity.

I'm doing my 3rd match this Friday night. A night match using weapon light and some ambient light. Figure it's gonna be tricky, but did some practice stages at my range last night so I'm excited to give it a try!! Gonna have fun tho, but goal is upper half finish. Good info here, I'm liking your competition videos a lot!!! Keep them coming and have a good week!

I have made the gun weight pressure releasing the mag mistake, but instead of retrieving a mag from the ground, I reloaded from the belt, now I set my gun down like I was handling a baby. Slow and soft ! :)

hammer follow usually means too much material from the sear, hammer, or both has been removed. There’s no enough contact to keep the hammer in place when cocked so it never locks back. Since you’re saying it happens only on close targets I’m wondering if it’s true hammer follow or if you’re doing something with your hands. Example would be slowing down the slide with your left hand thumb so it’s not reaching full cycle. This would keep the hammer from being cocked back as well. On closer targets people tense up more and do stuff with their hands they wouldn’t normally do in slow fire.

In a striker fired pistol that left thumb drag on the slide can cause a lockback after firing.

Easy fixes for a couple of things. If you watch a few of the pros most do not grab a gun off table with one hand. I grab with 2 hands. Weak hand lifts gun slightly then strong had grabs the grips. I do like to sit back and watch do the same thing you did. I run a standard weight mag release spring and no extended button. The other issue with follow when I had the issue was all me. I had to completely take my finger off the trigger and get used to that. That did fix the hammer follow. After a few weeks working on that I took it to my gunsmith and he said to do the same thing. I did have him set trigger for a little more reset. That was about 7 yrs ago and no more issues. The faster you go the more tension created in your hands. I also run about a 3.5# trigger most 2011 guys are sub 2#.

Wow - I did the same thing at my first major match this summer. Put my super heavy Shadow with brass grips down on a table - buzzer went off , I shot once and the mag had fallen out . Now I place my gun mag release up lol ! I also shot my worst match of the year ending up in the middle of the pack when I had been used to top 10’s. I let my mistakes get to me , tried to chase more speed to catch back up and things just kept falling apart. I tried to make big match excuses later to the more experienced competitors and was reminded that every stage is just a stage. You have to reset and start fresh every time you step up to the line . Since then I’ve shot a lot of good matches and am constantly learning from my mistakes and stay calmly focused on not repeating them. (And I bring a back up gun even to Level 1 matches - don’t feel like wasting the time and not being able to shoot. )

Thanks for that brutal honesty. Little joke: My gun diesnt hit where it should, whats the reason? A) Earth rotation suddenly stopped B) The lead in bullet converted to aluminium over night C) Sights shifted

Hey Myles, I saw you there but wasn’t 100% sure it was you and didn’t want to walk up and talk to you outta the blue. This was my first Limited nationals but I’ve shot many other Nationals in Production and could t agree with you more. You have to have a clone backup and you have to zero you gun for right long shots for Nats. My misses were of a different issue of pulling off target to quick. Thank you for your breakdown and analysis as it will help many people looking for guidance. I treat each day like a local match, you can’t get into your head just shoot each stage one at a time.

Try backing off the overtravel adjustment screw about 3/4 - a full turn. My Atlas was experiencing the same thing (hammer follow), but only while hosing on close arrays. If there is absolutely zero overtravel on the trigger right now, then that is likely your issue. The fact that it is only happening while shooting faster splits on close targets means it is almost certainly the overtravel stop being too aggressive. If there were a more serious issue with the sear and/or hammer hooks, it would be occurring all the time. 👍🏻

My very first USPSA Nats in 2018, very first stage, I knew the RO team and was so nervous about what they would think I forgot to bring my foot back into the shooting area after hitting the stomp pad. I felt like a dummy. Now after 3 nats and 40 or so L2 and area matches I go into a major with a goal, a percentage score zone I want to hit and its slightly above my percentage in my class. This year for instance I shot CO nats, very good match. My classification percentage at the tike was I think 62.xx% B class. My goal for the match was to shoot 65% of first place. After day one it looked like I had a solid performance to build on. Day two I took a really bad stage, mag malfunction on a fixed time stage. Basicly zero the stage. It killed the rest of my day (I still had a couple good stages but should have done better) and I just kept thinking about mags jamming. Day 3 I forgot two targets on the very last stage. I was mentally drained. In the end I shot 58% of first place. A few tips I can give is go in being able to trust your equipment, walk stages until you can do it in your head with out looking at the stage, don't get distracted by other shooter's emotions, HAVE FUN. The last one seemed to be hard for me by the end lf the year this year. And I don't really know why.

Great video - Thanks fer sharing invaluable experience. ...... have to say - at around 8:48 - that competitor is TOO careless with his weapon for me, ( flipping it around so he can maneuver), imo to the point where it is negligence warranting a DQ, on another note, I truly believe you have the makin's & will become a TOP competitor in no time, even record time.
