Top 5 Tesla apps and why they're the hidden gems. As good as the Tesla app and software experience is, they don't always cover all of our needs. Want to add voice assistant support to your car? Or see how much you’re paying to charge your car over the month? How about smarter scheduled charging, or automatically heating your car on a cold morning? There are some really talented developers and software companies creating software that can fill those gaps. Here's my top 5 apps to check out.

Imagine sentry mode notification on your phone (for alarm state) that shows you the cameras in real time when you open the notification. Tesla should add this to their official app. They probably don't want people bogging down their LTE though. They should have an LTE plan that isn't throttled, does this sentry thing, and lets you turn your car into a wifi hotspot.

@@UndecidedMF I also wish they gave their mobile app a revamp and made it fit the design language of the os it is running in (iOS/Android) or carried over the design language and cues from their V10 car software. The more I look at the app, the more I notice that it looks like an app from the original Droid days. I write frontend and mobile software for a living so I'm probably just super picky about this stuff, but still.

@UndecidedMF 4 жыл бұрын
When I first started using TeslaFi well over a year ago I noticed some increased phantom drain (very minor), but turned on a could of sleep mode options in the settings and it resolved itself. But in general, I’ve noticed no increased phantom drain when using one or two of these at a time. In recent months I’ve been testing 4 or 5 out at a time ... in those cases, yes, I saw phantom drain increase, but that wasn’t normal use. You really shouldn’t see anything.

One of the best uses of abetterrouteplanner is to gauge how long range one actually needs when deciding what EV to buy. Is it ok to go down in battery size if the charge rate is good? How msny longer road trips do you take per year and what are the typical travel times for them in all the different cars available. Is it worth the extra money? Is it worth it to just not stop at a petrol station all the time?

Matt I really enjoy your videos! If you had to only pick one, TeslaFi, Tesla, or Stats. Which one? Or does one compliment the other?
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 4 жыл бұрын
I’d probably go Stats if I had to choose one, but I think Stats and TeslaFi complement each other really well. Stats gives you a great snapshot of the car for day to day use and offers up additional controls. TeslaFi gives you the really deep data for more infrequent analysis. If you don’t care too much about the deep data ... Stats all the way.

Great review. Tesla did add the ability to review your dash cam in the vehicle. It also recently introduced a feature where it shows all or only Sentry event videos and it puts a red dot on the timeline to show you when the event happened. But it’s definitely not as cool as the app you are referring to. In your review.

Undecided with Matt Ferrell cool, thanks for the personal reply. We are currently racing ‘home’ to Kalbarri WA both in the SR+ and diesel motorhome as the Australian states have been closing borders and going into lockdown. Still have over 1000 miles to go, with only 15amp 240V single phase chargers in caravan parks across the Nullabor. (No grid electricity here, only diesel gens at the roadhouses) I have concluded that EVs are not the best tool to travel fast road trips where there is no grid! Funnily enough, yesterday with the Tesla fully charged, we rocked into a gas station to fill the RV. No diesel left. Took 3 hours for tanker to arrive, so topped off the Tesla from the RV solar at 2kW A Tesla win for a change! Just downloading Tezlab now to give it a try. Thanks for the tips

@UndecidedMF 4 жыл бұрын
Do you mean Android users? That is a limitation, but not one that I thought would knock it off the recommended list. It’s such a good app. Tezlab’s improvements have really jumped it up my list of go-to recommendations ... and that is cross platform. A good alternative to Stats ... just lacks the Siri integrations on iOS.

Great info, Matt, and thanks! If you're still looking here, do you find that TeslaFi won't let you car sleep? Based on the screen info at 3:56 in the video, the answer is no. Looks like your car sleeps fine. I have not been able to tweak the Sleep settings in TeslaFi in order to make that happen. So, unplugged, I lose close to 1 mile per hour. I just emailed TeslaFi to see if they can recommend anything, Otherwise, as geeky cool as the app is, I'd rather have the range back. One thing I don't want to do is have to restart logging manually every time I drive, and disable it manually after the drive. If you have any hint, I'mm all ears. Have a 2020 M3 LR AWD if that matters. Thanks!

Brilliant observations of the current offering and limitations. I do worry about the authentication process. For that reason I've not enabled 3rd party EV.energy to control the charging of my car. They offer clever ability to charge when grid is at its greenest. But I'm not putting my Tesla password into their app. I agree with you that it would be fantastic to have a tesla app store. Another revenue stream potentially.

Interesting review of Tesla apps 👍. Stats is definitely the app I need. What I'm looking for is an app that can show charging curves when I charge the car - and Stats can do that 😊. Trip data I can do without. I'm not an iOS guy and Stats is unfortunately not available for Android 😞. I don't want to change phone system due to a single app so I hope Stats will show up one day on Android. However, with your test of Stats over 2 years ago in mind, it is very likely that it will not happen. It is generally annoying with two different phone systems especially when the apps I need are only found in the system I don't use.

Very useful vid. Any issues using something like Tesla Fi and Stats at the same time? Or will it maybe cause more vampire drain or step on each other's toes so to speak. It looks like all the data in Tesla Fi is great but I'd like a phone app to have more control in my hand.

Hi Matt. Regarding the STATS app- I’m trying to get a clear answer about the main reason I want a Tesla app: will it tell me the total amount of charging I draw from my home charger? I want to know the kWh that I use for a day, for a week or month. Or better yet, over a period I can set (like the 8 week period of my electricity/Hydro bill). The App store only says 'A graph that shows stats related to your charging sessions’ or 'Displays several detailed information related to charging the car’. Or is there another app that might do this cheaper? Thanks so much.

Hi, thank you very much for these reviews. Please tell me, for TeslaFi to record charging information (how many kW charged), do I have to open it all the time and ask it to log the info ? Or can it log charging info directly to my Teslafi phone app without me having to remember to "turn it on each time" ? Also, can we have one account on two phones depending upon who is driving the car ? I have the same questions for your final app suggestion, Tezlab. Thank you if you know the answers to these questions. ;o)

I'm not sure if it exists but I would LOVE an app that allowed for set points while driving. In the winter my range is reduced significantly and it drives me nuts. I wish there was an app that would turn the heat off when the car reached a certain temp (say 70 F) and then turn on again when the temp drops down to a lower set point, like 60 F.

One obvious and useful Tesla app would be an implementation of an audio/video chat such as Zoom or a Skype-like app. The FM radio is almost certainly an SDR device, some have amazing spectrum coverage such as 50 to 500 Mhz, that could make a cool radio nerd app.

I’m waiting for my MY. Recently I learned Homelink is a $300 option. I’d be interested in your input about spending the money for Tesla Homelink or purchase a product to offer garage door automation with geofencing that could be used with any garage that has a wireless opener. I’m not tech savvy but I didn’t find anyone product that seems really good and reliable. Luv to have your opinion. Thanks, I really like your approach.
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 4 жыл бұрын
You could look into smart garage door openers like MyQ, but I’d be nervous about having my phone as the trigger to automatically open the garage door. Perhaps using a smart tracker linked to a smart home hub like Smartthings. Leave that tracker in your car. When your house detects the smart tracker it triggers the door. It’s a bit convoluted and requires some setup and cost (cost of hub, tracker, and garage door opener add on). Don’t think it’s a better option than the $300 Tesla option.

It should be straightforward to add an openid or “apps list” on the Tesla account page. Question is, how many people want this? On the point of opening up the in-car ecosystem to 3rd party apps - I disagree. As a dev myself I understand the nuisances regarding hardware performance and how tricky it can be to sandbox 3rd party apps. On an iPad this can be managed with enough dev time and protections. Even the Apple App Store misses sketchy code in apps on occasion and their review process is possibly the most stringent. However in a car - a machine that could kill you if the UX wasn’t snappy on a display which feeds info to a driver controlling a machine that could potentially take a life- well that needs a different risk profile. I think keeping the primary display computer isolated from external code (3rd party apps) is the way to go for now.

What's the weather tomorrow, make a reservation at Carrabba's for 1 pm, play some smooth jazz, tell Roni I'll be home in an hour, navigate to my next appointment... Smooth as silk and flawless accuracy. Tesla isn't even close.

Nothing at the same level that I’ve found. BUT Tezlab is a good cross platform alternative to check out. It does have a free tier that gives you a rolling 7 day window to try it out.

These apps make it feel like taking a key to a Tesla then saying, “at least I can see the insides of the metal now.” They’re so gross looking. But I get the point…just destroys the simplicity and clean image Tesla brings so much comfort and relief to.

There's a Tesla Tasker plugin, so I believe there's a lot of possibilities that direction too. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.crazydog.teslatasker&hl=en_US

yes, Tesla and other OEMs should see the vehicle as an iPhone on wheels. Build support for 3rd party apps. Even take 30% of revenue during app download. Yes, this is another revenue source.

The ones I’ve mentioned don’t, but that’s not necessarily true for all Tesla third party apps. Gotta be careful there. But I haven’t noticed any increased phantom drain when using one or two of them at the same time. I have noticed increased drain when using 4 or 5 at once though ... but that’s just me ... I’m not normal. 😜 I tend to test out a lot of these (including some that are still in development).

What is a "third party” product? There is the manufacturer that makes a product and the customer. The customer doesn’t make products. I think after market is the correct term.

Is TeslaFi safe? I don't see a spot to generate an API token anymore but TeslaFi accepts Tesla login and password.
@joeedbkk
@joeedbkk 4 жыл бұрын
There is no need for Tesla to open their authentication system to 3rd parties; they should simply allow users to generate API keys so 3rd party apps can use them to authenticate. Ideally you would generate 1 API Key/app and this way it is very easy to remove access to a single app without impacting the other ones.
@UndecidedMF
@UndecidedMF 4 жыл бұрын
That’s the thing. They already have, but just haven’t surfaced a standard front end.
@joeedbkk
@joeedbkk 4 жыл бұрын
@@UndecidedMF What I mean is that you should be able to generate this API Key yourself and provide it to TeslaFi for instance instead of having to give out your username/password. Of course, if on top of that, it would be possible to assign permissions to that API Key (like, read only) that would be perfect. Good video nevertheless.
