Hello everyone,
Happy National Week Of Deaf People! It is very exciting time of year.
My name is Jinaya Myers and I have been working with SLC Victoria for the past 6-7 months within their Intern Program. What a fantastic opportunity it has been.
Anyway, SLC Victoria have asked me to share 5 top things about being an Auslan Interpreter. So here they are....
1. I love Auslan, it is such a beautiful and visual language.
2. I enjoy meeting new people every day; whether they be Deaf, hearing or tandem interpreters. I meet such lovely people.
3. I love the variety of my job. My role sees me travelling to a variety of locations and interpreting a variety of situations. This is very different to a 9am-5pm desk job.
4. I enjoy the challenges I am faced with at every job. Some challenges are minor and some are extraordinary. No matter what the challenge, I do enjoy them and how they assist me to improve my skills.
5. I love learning new things. For example while interpreting a University lecture, I am able to learn about the different subjects and specialist areas. It is incredibly fascinating. Luckily I do not have to sit the exams or write the assignments.
There you have it, my five top things I like about being an Auslan Interpreter.
Have a good week and I hope to see you all soon.
Bye for now.

I'm waiting to be accepted into an Auslan cert II course. I can't wait. I really want to become an interpreter! I can't wait to learn all about this beautiful language and it's history and deaf culture itself! I hope I can love the job as much as she does.

Love this vid, keep rewatching to practise receptive skills. Only been learning for 8 weeks and loving it. Had to watch vid at 25% of original speed to understand her name though! haha

Jinaya's definitely been successful; she's appearing at press conferences with some regularity these days. :-)
