With a French door you need to bend down ALL the time for freezer contents. With SxS, you put less often used fridge items on the bottom and less often used freezer items in the bottom. So more often used freezer items are reached more easily.

Alice - you nailed the central problem with French Door fridges: EVERYTHING in the freezer requires you to bend way over or get down on your hands and knees. Plus, EVERYTHING in the freezer is in a single pile with no good way to organize it. IMO, the only home refrigerator style that is a reasonable compromise of all possible features is the S x S. The is especially true for elderly people, or anyone with impaired mobility. I organize my SxS the same way you suggest: Frequently used foods like milk, condiments, salad materials, and lunchmeat, on the upper shelves, and long-term storage items that won't be needed everyday, in the lower shelves. For people that only have space for a fridge less than 18 cubic feet, the "apartment style" fridges, with the freezer compartment above the fridge, are probably the most volume and energy efficient. Volumetric efficiency of Side-by-sides isn't the greatest, since that center partition has to be quite thick to provide enough insulation between the freezer and fridge to prevent freeze-up of the foods in the fridge side of the unit.

My side by side has the ice maker built into the door, so it's innacurate to attribute that only to French door fridges. Having owned both, I will also say that the freezer contents on a French door fridge tends to be a 'large pile of stuff' piled at kneecap level and below, with fewer ways to organize, IMO. Some things to consider anyway, and to each his/her own.

@@richardday3136 Yeah that's what we were thinking as well. We just went through this exercise and we didn't want a French Door fridge because of those reasons. We have a child and I want him to be able to open the fridge and grab an apple when he wants one. Also the freezer is more useable instead of being a big pile of frozen stuff. Also our kitchen was designed for a side-by-side and that works well in the cooking setup in my kitchen. There are definite advantages and disadvantages to each.

What you don't mention is the reliability of the Side by Side. We have had 2 French Doors...Kitchenaid and Whirlpool. The Kitchenaid has been fairly reliable, however, the Whirlpool is only on year 3 and we have had 6 service calls/parts replacement...ice maker, condenser (twice), door gasket (twice). Thank God we purchased the extended warranty or this would have been a boat anchor the first 6 months. We have had 5 service repairmen say that by far, the French Door is the most problematic and the one requiring the most service. Each also claim that the side by sides are the most trouble free.

Guys a true salesman. No real space/volume benefit in a french door fridge but a more efficient layout. Most of them actually have less space in the freezer drawer along with being much more cluttered with everything piled up. Also, many french door refrigerators have the ice maker in the shelf area taking up fridge space so that is not an exclusive side by side issue. Also, french door refrigerator ice makers have more issues because of being in the main fridge area and exposed to warmer than freezing temps causing the ice makers to freeze up and not work (all brands). Really comes down to the model and what the user wants as each design have advantages and disadvantages.

Here is why you don't want a French Door: 1. More complex so breaks easier/faster. 2. Freezer has bins so things get stacked all in the bins. If one item falls behind the bin, the entire freezer drawer can't close, so you must unpack the ENTIRE Freezer =PITA. 3. Lack of vertical space 4. Running a icemaker in a fridge = melted ice in lines and melted ice in door = jams = repair bills 5. If you have kids who are small, like 8 y/os and 4 feet tall, congrats, they can now not reach the fridge. 6. It is inconvenient to have to bend down everytime you reach the freezer, in a sxs you can put items you use most in fridge/freezer at arm level, so may rarely bend down. 7. Just try to youtube for a French door Maytag 33 inch, the owner gives a review and shows how it is basically impossible to organize a FULL or nearly full fridge of this type. Due to lack of separation. You basically have like 2 large wide shelves and a half shelf [the other half is the icemaker and its consistent across french door models.] So you end up with all your fridge contents on basically 2.5 shelves 😆🤣😂 8. Further, the shelves are less tall, so in some cases you can't fit tall vegetables into the crisper like cabbage, watermelon, etc, so you lose even more space on your limited 2 shelves. 9. The organization problem is grossly exacerbated by having a icemaker in your fridge area, which now cuts into your fridge space for the shelf below 10. Side by side sxs, have been around longer in mass production, so they have their kinks worked out more. French door is a newer tech, the manufacturers are still figuring out the design as unexpected use and problems pop up and will take years to iron out. 11. O and French door style, they have less space for condiments in the door, because you get a half door on the right side [instead of a full door like in a sxs] and a maybe 1 space on the left side that is tiny if your lucky. Why, because the ice maker takes up all the space on the left side of the door, along with the dispenser so you actually have less door space. So now your ketchups, sode pops, mustards, condiments and other stuff normally in the side door, they all end up in fridge making it look even messier! SxS is the way to go, or even freezer on top.

@Father4ev3r
@Father4ev3r 3 жыл бұрын
From personnel experience, French door type fridges are notorious for poor ice production and dispensing (in door - melting and freezing lockup) and they also tend to accumulate ice on the bottom of the freezer area, under the pull out freezer drawer, as the upper refrigerator internal humidity drain gets plugged, feeezes and then overflows into the lower drawer where it accumulates on the bottom and freezes. Over time, it'll seep behind the seal, thaw and leak onto the floor. Unplugging the drain tube causing this requires removing everything from the fridge, removing the internal back panel, unclog and reinstall...real pain in the butt and a huge inconvenience! The whole process takes over half an hour, knowing what to do and it'll take hours to re-cool the fridge and food. Unfortunately, the drain tubes typically run really close to the freezer area and it'll eventually freeze up again, creating the aforementioned mess all over again.

Honestly who even knows what's in the bottom of that stupid drawer. I have tried multiple ways to organize this and it is simply impossible. The frig part is fine but the freezer NO NO NO.There is no way to get stuff that has fell behind the drawer without removing the drawer which is a horrible task. If you have had the same fridge for 20 years you are lucky. It seems to me that after the mid 1990's, all kinds of home appliance manufacturing quality went down the tubes. When I bought my home in January 1989, I bought a new Kenmore 27 cu.ft. side-by-side. I don't know who manufactured it, probably GE or Whirlpool, but I could tell from the sound it made while running that it had a conventional Danfoss-style compressor. I finally replaced that fridge in 2017, not because it quit working - the compressor still qan just fine - but because the plastic drawer and shelf brackets were disintegrating from age and embrittlement, and by that time, the fridge was so old that replacement parts were becoming unobtanium. So I bought another Kenmore in October 2017. Unbeknownst to me, Kenmore's fridges of that era were all re-branded LG's with LG's infamous "linear compressor". As I was buying that fridge, LG was already fighting a huge class-action lawsuit about premature failures of these compressors, and sure enough, mine failed too: less than 4 years after I brought it home. At that point I was faced by a bad choice: pay $800 to repair this out-of-warranty unit, and risk maybe having the electronics mainboard go bad only a year later - another $500 repair - or replace the fridge. So I replaced the fridge, only this time I shelled out $250 more for a 5 year warranty. I almost NEVER buy extended warranties, but these accursed appliance manufacturers have us by the short hairs: we've got to have appliances like fridges and laundry machines, and they've figured out how to build them so that they are practically guaranteed to only last just to the end of the warranty. What happened to the idea that a $2000 appliance should last 10 years at least, if not 20 years? In my lifetime, between my parent's appliances that they owned when I was a kid, and the ones I've owned when I was first married in 1986, I've seen at least a half-dozen refrigerators by GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, and Kenmore that were made between 1968 and 1988, and at 20+ years old, they were still running fine. They maybe weren't as energy efficient as 2020 EnergyStar models, but c'mon, even the cheapest 25 cubic foot fridges are over $1,000 now, and it's unfair of these manufacturers to be pushing crap that that expensive on us! And hey, let's not forget the value of the whole fridge load of food you are going to lose in the 2 to 3 weeks in between the time your old fridge dies and a new one can be brought in. When my 2017 Kenmore died last August - only 42 months old! - I lost about $500 in frozen foods, and the more expensive things like cheese and lunchmeat. So the death of that $1600, 42 month old Kenmore fridge was actually more like $2100 when you factor in all the food I lost.

Refrigerator preferences are very subjective. For example, I hate french door fridges, mainly because, to get anything in the freezer, you ALWAYS have to either bend way over or get down on your hands and knees to rummage around in there - not easy for elderly people, or anyone with back problems. Also, French Door units tend to emphasize more volume in the fridge compartment and less in the freezer. Which is exactly the opposite of what I want. Most 27 cu. ft. side-by-sides that don't have ice through the door, have about 10 cu. ft. in the freezer, 16 in the fridge. With an Ice dispenser in the door, you lose about 2 cu. ft., so I prefer fridges that have internal ice makers, but that don't have door dispensers. It's a slight loss of convenience, and the fridge does lose some efficiency because you are opening the door more often, but losing 2 or 3 of the door shelves just to have an ice dispenser is unacceptable for me. French Door units of 27 cu. ft. typically have only 7 cubic feet in the freezer, and 20 in the fridge, but again, if there's an ice dispenser, you lose 2 or 3 cubic feet in the fridge section. French Door fridges also tend to be marketed as "upscale", and thus more expensive by several hundred dollars than side-by-sides of the same capacity.

Can’t fit any pizza in any side by side … we have a sxs and we have two pizzas in there
@hernandayolearyallda
@hernandayolearyallda 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDodoshwedo Read all the comments, basically 1.

Ice makers in the door of a french door fridge is a BIG NO NO! Those are the absolute WORST performing refrigerator’s which ALWAYS have issues. The reason is, the icemaker and ice storage bin is in the door, of the REFRIGERATOR, not in the FREEZER where they belong. So the compressor, evaporator, control board… all have to work harder to keep the ice frozen, in the door of the fridge which is much warmer. They are nothing but headaches. DO NOT BUY A FRENCH DOOR FRIDGE with an icemaker in the door.

I have owned this trash French Door with a lower BOX Freezer for eight years. The ice maker is located in the upper section or refrigerator section. It takes away from your storage room in that area and causes the fan motor section to freeze solid, needing manual defrost. The freezer box is a nightmare. Food is stored on top of food like in the old box freezers. You cannot locate an item without digging through the entire lot. This is the worst job of design ever. The lower shelves on a side by side are no problem compared to the lower freezer on the French door. You obviously have never owned a Side by Side or French door refrigerator or else you have little knowledge of making comparisons of them.

Yes - the plumbing for a French door ice-maker is way more complicated than the side-by-side ice maker. More complexity=more ways for it to malfunction.

He paints a picture of on form factor being better or worse than another by pointing at a lousy example of one style and contrasting it with a much better exemplar of the other style. A crappy side by side icemaker vs a better designed french door. Get rid of the ice maker on both and that argument goes away.

My daughter just had her 6 year old Samsung french door fridge die. First the icemaker started to have problems. Water was leaking from it somewhere, and causing an ice jam to build up behind it. This ice jam actually broke some wires that went to the icemaker and caused a short circuit. The service tech disconnected the icemaker and removed it, and ordered a replacement (back ordered because of all the supply chain problems). A week later, while they were waiting for a new icemanker to be installed, the main compressor quit and they lost all their food. Replacing it with a GE, but who's to say it will be any better? All home appliances are crap nowadays, seems like.

Ya this has not aged well. My Samsung French door SUCKS!! I'll be selling it for 1/4 what I paid and will NEVER own another. Putting the ice maker in the refrigerated part was a horrible design and causes non stop frost/freeze ups and I have to chisel out the ice maker every week. I've tried all the fixes and none have worked. As for the freezer..... its tied with my HE washer for being annoying to use.
