No. 3 was an amazing tip!! Even me as a mechanic didn’t think to look at those types of parts as a litmus test for how much the rig has been used. Great Job!!!

Many M998's have upgrades and people upgrade the 3 speed to the 4L80 or even the 700R4. IMO, Don't use that as a red flag just check it out. I disagree with your odometer comments. I agree with checking stuff for wear and tear as an indicator of use. MORE likely the odometer is wrong because they changed the Engine during a rebuild process. The speedo/odo don't often go bad. You are more likely to find a Humvee listed with 40K miles and a drivetrain with only a couple thousand due to the rebuild process. This is especially true with the M998's that originally would have had a 6.2 and currently have a GEP 6.5. A better Red flag is the original 6.2! I'd stay away from them. There are many reasons a Humvee could have a starting issue, some are common and easy to fix. Some are common and can be costly (start box $500-1000) and so people do a modification to eliminate the start box. Expect maintenance, they are Used Military vehicles. I wouldn't ever buy one as a daily driver. They are more of a recreational vehicle. They are NOT Safe. The Military Humvee's are an absolute disaster in any type of crash situation. The H1 Hummers had a lot more safety requirements to meet. These are not H1's.

Blow by is compression leaking past the piston rings. Some is normal but a lot is bad. Its a good gauge of how the pistons and rings are doing. The 6.5 it is common for the ring gaps to align over time.

I drove a M1025 in the Army, we rarely took them off road but we did run them at near top speed. Our always started up the first try assuming you got the glow plug warm. Ours didn't have "P" in 1990. I always found putting the bump on the top of the left turn signal on the white line of the road was the best way to keep in centered in the lane. You also don't want to get the dust from the paint in your lungs, we were warned it caused cancer because because of some anti NBC things in the paint.

thats interesting... never thought of anti NBC agents in the paint itself. learn something new every day

the Humvee is my favourite truck. I'm 17 and plan on getting one soon. I don't know if its a good idea cause I'm in Quebec, Canada. our max speed is about 60mph (100kmh). Mechanics here are not very good with real trucks, so I will probably end up doing maintenance myself. I love your vids!

m998A1 trucks were only produced for one year and still have the Turbo 400 3 speed trans...85 to 93 are now refered to as A0 trucks. The Turbo 400 3 speed has no computer, so some may prefer it. 95 went to A2 and the electronically controlled 4l80 4 speed.
@Kevin24Seven2 жыл бұрын
What happens if the computer fails on the 4l80? I was always just told you lose overdrive and some hard shifts, but it would still be drivable, but I've never tested it for myself lol.

Something annoying is they are listed on carsforsale as a Hummer H1 and they are NOT an H1 at ALL. Yeah, 3 speed forget it, no interior, no doors. And they have these priced for 45k or more. Please. 15-20k max. but it better have an on-road title.
@Kevin24Seven3 жыл бұрын
It just depends... Little mods with onroad title I agree- 25k max. However you can easily put 45k into a Humvee making it nice. The worst part is H1s are almost all 100k+ now!

@@Kevin24Seven A few years ago I looked into getting a humvee but I'm glad I didn't go that route, I would probably either not have a title or tag DMV would reject it (and you can't just go to a different DMV, have to go to your county office, at least here in KS), probably too much money into it too in the end. Ended up going with an H2 and it's best of both worlds. Ended up buying a second H2 I liked it so much, put 37's on that one, good enough. Can go 80mph and off road, not that I have any place to go off road here, I wish. An H1 would be nice but not spending that much on one, I got my first H2 a few years ago cheap. Yeah, I know what you mean, they get them on gov planet for 10k and they put aftermarket wheels on them (which I hate) and ask 4 times the price. Nope. They're really barebones vehicles like driving a tractor, lol. I was really into the M35A1 for awhile, came close to buying one, test drove it and decided that was not for me. I liked the look of them and would be good for hauling stuff, but man, had to turn the steering wheel a lot, and the brakes I hadn't had to stamp on the brake peddle so much since yeah driving a tractor when I was maybe 12 and couldn't get the peddles down just a small kid. I actually missed two stops when I was trying to turn in that m35A2. That was the first and only time I drove one. Drove my dad's F800 and that also had a two speed transmission but it was like night and day difference between the two 2.5 ton trucks.

You'd be hard pressed to find a hummve (or any military vehicle) that isn't beyond 100,000 for auction, most of the trucks there are well over 10-20 years old and have had almost every part replaced at some point

The more red flags, the cheaper it is at auction. Missing two tires? Check. Missing the whole gauge cluster? ✔️. A two tone with armor removed? ✔️. No windshields? ✔️. Non starting but complete 6.5 TURBOOO? ✔️. But, a rebuild/ IRONAN tag at 5,836 miles . Also it has a Rino tire carrier. Otherwise a complete truck. I basically stole my second HMMWV. Yes, I'm going to need to replace the he same stuff I changed on my M1123. But I paid less then half for my new M1151-A1. I'm just hoping it's out of fuel . I love the red flags. 🍻🇺🇸. Will update when I get it home.

Those are MidWest Military Equipment guards. They also sell a newer version that looks a bit different. Warning they are quite difficult to mount up and weigh a lot. I would recommend a couple transmission jacks to hold them in place and quite a few drill bits.
