I finally got one of these last winter. I was so excited. I set it up that day and that night we were supposed to get a little bit of snow. I decided to keep it up. That night we got a lot more snow than we were supposed to. It collapsed the first 24 hours I had. This was on my own stupidity, but I was so bummed.
@mytwelveacres3071 Жыл бұрын
That does suck. We have the rain fly supported separately from the tent. The tent never gets any load from the snow and if there is a failure hopefully it’s just the rain fly. Thanks for watching!

I clicked on this expecting to hear crap. But he hit on all the right stuff. I've recently retired from 40 years as a professional prospector. I've spent a good part of my life in wall tents across northern Canada. A good wall tent and stove (oil in most working camps) with the sides banked with snow at 30 below can be (nearly!) as comfortable as your front room. Just keep things off the floor because it never gets above freezing. Hang everything up. And as he said for all the right reasons...always put a fly on it even though all the manufacturer claim it's waterproof. They are waterproof in the first 2 or 3 storms after they shrink....then they start leaking, usually at the seams. I really miss living in these tents.

Do you think you could survive in that tent for a winter or 2 if you had to? Provided you had enough food, water and fire wood... In Canada, North Ontario or north Manitoba where the temperature can be in the minus 30's
@mytwelveacres30713 жыл бұрын
Sure why not, with the right attitude anything is doable. People have lived in harsh environments with much less I'm sure. A canvas wall tent heats up very quickly. But it cools down just a fast. A good heat source would be important in those temps.... Thanks for watching!

@@theraven9156 I've spent months in the NWT in winter camps in 10x12 wall tents. We use diesel stoves as it's the barren lands. Even if wood is available, -40 you burn a sh--load of wood. These tents come insulated as well. Definitely consider that option. More $$ but it's your life at risk in January in northern Manitoba

@mytwelveacres30713 жыл бұрын
Hey R, thanks for watching, Our tent is 12'x12' with a 4' extension on the tarp. We would have gone bigger, 12'x14', if we could have. With a full size bed, wood stove, small table and a couple of chairs it does get cozy in there. We purchased the tent from Davis Tent and Awning. They were great to work with and will customize the tent to your needs.Good luck and Happy Camping to you and your wife.

Sir: regarding that stove jack, is there a benefit to having it on the roof, as opposed to on a sidewall? Here in Florida it would be superfluous, but, enquiring minds want to know. Thanx for a great video.
@mytwelveacres30712 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve, In hindsight, for a long term setup such as ours it would have been better to have the stove jack thru the wall. It eliminates the holes thru the roof and any associated problems. Davis Tent now recommends and offers that option for "GLAMPING TENTS". For short term setups the roof stove jack is not really a problem. But you do have that choice. Thanks for watching!

Does anybody know where to purchase an A frame organic canvas for 2?
@noahriding57802 жыл бұрын
For these types of heavy duty tents, they typically say when they put out classified as either marine treated, marine acrylic type canvas, or the other kind they say is fire certified. I was trying to figure out the difference between why they would have both types and the most appropriate use for both? Is the fire type for dry, hot arid climates and the marine type for wet humid etc? Or is it something else?
@mytwelveacres30712 жыл бұрын
Some states require fire resistance in tents. I believe that is the major reason for that option. check out the Davis tent website... they explain their fabrics well.www.davistent.com/you-are-buying-fabric/

Another thing I wanted to ask... how do you keep snakes (rattlers) out of the tents (or tipis) when rural camping in non-winter months?

Wall tents have a plastic sod skirt around the bottom. Bury in the dirt. That and enough movement inside keep them away. Keep your kit in order with no hiding places with crap on the floor. I've done that in the state of Zacatecas Mx with never having a visitor despite seeing them all day long on traverse.

if you are building a deck you might as well just build a whole cabin
@mytwelveacres30713 жыл бұрын
Well, maybe. But the ambience of a canvas wall tent is far greater than that of a wooden shack. For the price of the tent that's all I could have built LOL. Thanks for watching!
@explosionsandstuff77873 жыл бұрын
depending on factors like the material you're using, how much free time you have to work on it, how fancy you want it, and the weather building a cabin can take anywhere from weeks to months. the deck will take an afternoon, so you build the deck so you can live onsite in the tent while you build the cabin.

hi, nice video.Is there no ground sheet attached to wall tent? I would love one, but I worry about mice, spiders crawling in
@mytwelveacres30713 жыл бұрын
We do not have a ground sheet although they ARE available from DAVIS TENT. They offer SEWN IN FLOORS and you can have them custom cut your door opening to accept a regular house door. That would just about eliminate most pests. Getting the occasional bug isn't a big deal to us, so we opted for no floor. Our tent wraps down around our deck, and I have screen under our deck boards. That combination keeps most bugs out. THANKS FOR WATCHING!

Hey Joseph, We bought it thru Davis Tent in Colorado, Great company to work with! It is not a tub bottom tent. The bottom 10 inches or so are a heavy vinyl fabric.
