Building the wooden skillion frame for my Central U.P. earthship in June. The skillion frame was the cheapest and quickest structure I can build. Leaves room to build masonry columns too. A lot like Goldie and Matts. Built for my snow loads. To have more shelter than a tent at camp. I also need 6/12 slope for heavy snow loads. 9 piers, 9 post, 3 headers, and roof make up a simple pole structure. The first 24x32 of 3 sections. So hoping to have skillion pavilion built in a coupe of weeks this June. Then will figure out funding for side walls or maybe have more money saved by then. I will be using concrete block that I have with stone veneer for my 6 foot north wall. The north wall is coldest so, shrank it down. To minimum I need for egress windows. The farther you go north the colder the ground gets. I need as much insulation under the floor as the roof. R60 with thermal break and thermal mass. So a berm I think would be a loss of energy and labor and time. Rockwool batts and board around outside of block then low perm vapor barrier, air gap, and a 12"-8" stone veneer. I would use stone over concrete block for structure but time and my labor. Code changed on what kind of insulation I can do under floors. Hoping to use local limestone fines with 3.5" mix of concrete+flag stone over insulation. Going above ground planter. I like the skillion frame design, because can start with a 24x32 area with half enclosed and then add on. Less than 5000$ I can have framed shelter. I have plans for 2 masonry heaters, masonry stove and white oven on that north block wall too. So it needs a massive insulated block foundation. Because using block piers I need no heavy machinery to start building the wooden frame. I work on the oldest masonry buildings around for a living.

Sounds like you got a lot of it planned out which is a good thing! It would be awesome to see some of your progress with it later this year.... very interesting build and lots of different hybrid ideas. Good luck Eli and thanks again for the comments!

May I suggest a topic. Have you ever seen the solar kilns? Reminds me of the earthship greenhouses but to dry wood. That's a great earthship add on to me. If your in a place with trees to use a lumber.

Do you do videos on earthship hybrid type houses? Something that’s maybe not totally self sufficient but modifications we can do on our own homes.
@OwnerBuildersUnite
@OwnerBuildersUnite 4 ай бұрын
There's certainly a few different types of "Earthship" style house on our Home Tour playlist if you click on that... I would certainly say some of them are hybrid types but more tours to come! Will have some more passive solar stuff coming. Thanks for watching.

is 3000 tires enough to start?
@OwnerBuildersUnite
@OwnerBuildersUnite Жыл бұрын
That's way more tires than you need... depending on how many sqft your place is you might need as little as 400-500... that's around what mine is... and it's 900sqft. Hope that gives you an idea.

Old tires leach petrochemicals, rubber compounds and all kinds of heavy metals (including mercury and lead) into surrounding soil and groundwater. A tire, even partially, submerged in water will kill most aquatic life within weeks. Plants will absorb these pollutants, so eating anything grown next to an old tire is literal poison. Don't even use the plants for composting for the same reason.

Would a earthship home be good in Louisiana?
@OwnerBuildersUnite
@OwnerBuildersUnite Жыл бұрын
I think so! You'd just have to do a good job with the vapor barrier since Louisiana has so much moisture. They build them all over the world even in tropical climates.

I'm looking to build a chicken coop, earthship style, but with earthbags. I have construction experience, and I welded for a few years too. What dimensions do I need to consider? It's not going to have a green house like with plants, but I might try to get a stream running through the front part for them. Anything to help keep them safer overnight and warmer on these winter days.
@OwnerBuildersUnite
@OwnerBuildersUnite Жыл бұрын
That sounds like a fun project, I think you should consider the amount on chickens you want for your dimensions and I’m a fan of building stuff smaller at first and then maybe doing an addition… just a thought, happy building!

why do earthships use tires?
@OwnerBuildersUnite

Because they are free, everywhere, and a great way to add thermal mass to a passive solar structure. And to make building take a little longer so you can really take it all in
