Earthships are so amazing because we are using waste materials, and building using natural processes like water catchment and filtration of wastewater, the natural flow of air for heating and cooling, passive solar, etc. Goldie did a great job explaining the benefits. A really fun couple, and I loved the outtakes!
@trevorlambert4226
@trevorlambert4226 Ай бұрын
Earthships are a luxury product masquerading as environmentally friendly. There isn't enough land in places with the required resources for everyone or even a significant minority of people to do this. And upcycling is great, but it's a resource that is dependent on the consumption of others. The more people you convince to do things like this, the scarcer those resources become, until you reach the point that you're forced to buy something new. The point being, this isn't a model for a more sustainable way of living as a society, just for a small number of people. It's a hobby.

@@trevorlambert4226 Nobody does everything. They will always be consumption and waste in every part of nature. That is why we have buzzards. This is just one alternative to many ways of living. I wish them well.

Well, while I don't think Earthship are actually masked luxurious products, it's true they do require significant plot to start with. Furthermore, this is technically not Earthship, but "Earthship inspired building", since the author prohibits using this term loosely (and this is clearly not his design, having vertical windows). The earth tubes can only work properly in extremely arid locations like deserts (and even then I'd be seasonally careful), since in all other climates they're extremely tricky and basically must be equiped with bunch of sensors, automatic valves and custom programmed control unit; otherwise condensation, mold and associated high health risks are guaranteed. Gray water fed with toilets is outright banned in many countries, but one can still employ shower or kitchen sink water. Rain catchment is absolutely standard in most of Europe and since some 10 years ago even a requirement for every new house in most countries in Europe. As for reusing materials, this is truly a luxury part (if you want to do it correctly). Renovating old materials needs top-notch workmanship, dedication and a lot of time and resources - so they end up much more expensive than regularly available items (and most of the time unique and admirable). Slapping together bunch of scrapyard items kind-of-works, but in my opinion is dreadful. In fact most of Earthship projects really lack good workmanship. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great thing people are building any houses themselves and they should, but maybe they should make efforts to study the trades at least on youtube, pay at least for a part of some jobs someome who's willing to teach tem a bit (takes effort, but there are many open to that),... The lack of workmanship is sad. But don't get me wrong, while I consider Eartships an extreme exercise, I think they're for the same reason very interesting and got me inspired for my next house I plan, an earth bermed and sheltered house.

wish this was the norm- what a great way to use waste . Think about how building with these systems would support better water use practices ( especially in South West) We need more alternative living options and more regulation on businesses buying homes and apartments for investments, not for living. Their log walls, the use of glass etc is amazing.

All the old tires they used. The bottles. Awesome!!!! Took 5 years to build and no mortgage and paying out thousands 💰 in interest!!!!! With the price of rent and house payments now in 2024. They built it back when things were cheaper, too. Love the greenhouse and the bathtub area!!! I would want an island in the kitchen and with about 4 comfortable tall swivel chairs. They probably eat in the greenhouse. Drink coffee/tea in the greenhouse. That greenhouse in the winter time. 🥰 I love seeing people’s creativity. I would like to have a sunroom.
@oakld
@oakld Ай бұрын
Unfortunately (or not), this can't be the norm. First of all, these buildings are quite space demanding. Using waste materials is generally very demanding, if you want to do it properly. A LOT of work needs to go in restoring the materials and if you want to have a good level of workmanship, it really becomes luxurious item. The earth tubes will not work properly and will be dangerous to your health, if you try to build them in other place but desert, without multiple sensors, automatic valves and custom control unit connected to smart hub. It needs to know real-time atmosferic conditions, preferably also forecast, temperatures in different parts of the tubes, etc. Effectively becoming more expensive than a good ERV unit (not saying it's not worth it, but pointing out the troubles). They didn't mentioned it, but earth tubes is half of the natural ventilation, you also need some high exit point for effective ventilation, typically front windows, which also need to be automated, if not in arid conditions and the natural ventilation should work without you being a control unit 24/7. Releasing toilet waste is not permitted in many countries in the world and I believe whole EU, for instance. To sum it up, my point is, that you can get some inspiration in Earthships as an extreme architectural exercise, but local conditions and realities of this world will (and should, IMHO) force you to build differently, even if you start with an Eearthship idea in other places than arid Southern USA.
@timgillman
@timgillman Ай бұрын
Very nice! If you are gone for a month or so, can you set it so that the water in the greenhouse recycles to keep the plants watered, even if no one is there taking showers and washing hands? In what ways could the manual labor of pounding tires (2 years) be replaced by say a concrete block wall? I appreciate what Matt said about free materials not being free and taking work to get them ready to reuse.
@goldiemariola-gill6522
@goldiemariola-gill6522 Ай бұрын
Great questions! We have left for weeks at a time and I have a lot of potted plants too that need watered so I have always had someone checking on them. The large planter cell stays full because the mulch/bark prevents evaporation. I imagine it would be at least a month before water needed to be added. And yes, many things can be used in place of tires. Rammed earth, ICF block, straw bale. Even a standard stick frame, as long as it faces south, and you have plenty of thermal mass and insulation, it will function similarly.

Lovely for those who have the energy & oomph to do the work, and the necessary cash to get started - you need at least the price of the land for that. Not something everyone can do, but it's a great thing for those who can. And of course if the whole population decided to do this there would not be land enough for everybody anyway ! So - my point is this is lovely for those who can, but never forget you are privileged if you have the chance to do this !

The construction costs between $125,000 and $250,000+. It is cool, but it prompts the question of whether a similar result could be achieved at a lower cost by using more conventional materials and techniques. In particular, it would be interesting to see whether a comparable result could be achieved with less expensive materials and a heat pump, with solar energy playing a more prominent role. What do people think about that? Trying to learn and earthship are around for a while now but tech is changing. Beautiful earthship ether way

2 questions. Do you use a specific hand/ body soap and shampoo that is biodegradable so not to harm the plants when that Grey water is used for watering? And do you get a lot of dust coming through your cooling tube? A furnace filter would be easy enough to use, but would that impede airflow?
@goldiemariola-gill6522

Yes we have to be aware of what products we use. Luckily we like the natural stuff anyways. Our house can get very dusty, we live in a sand box so it gets in from everywhere. It's not a huge issue, I just sweep every couple days. A filter would help dust but also minimize air flow.
