Also grades are a very serious thing in Japan. The better your grades, the better highschool you can get into, and thus the better college you can get into. Think of the difference between Stanford and a state college, and that starts in Highschool in Japan.

Here is a tip for those going to a Japanese school: If you just meet someone please use the suffix -san with their last name (EX: Tamahashi-san). You can call them with their first name if you’ve known them for a long time. Please use the suffix Sensei with a teacher. It is basically how foreigners say Mrs. (Last name). (EX: Tamahashi-sensei). If you are entering a Japanese elementary school, let your parents teach you how to cook due to the elementary not letting you bring lunchboxes (Only the high school brings them). You cannot bring your cellphone as it is considered as a distraction. You would also need to walk home, and try to memorize where you live. (Or, you can take a bus. Don’t worry, 6+ children can travel alone. You cannot slouch around in cleaning time.

American schools still have uniforms though. It just if the school itself has a uniform code or sometimes the students themselves refuse to wear it which the school then becomes laxs with dress code. By the time I was in middle school I switched school in 6th grade which later in the year even after I graduated in 8th grade dress code became almost whatever the student wanted to wear. Even in high school there was a dress code but around the time I was in 10th or 11th grade every student went from business casual to street clothes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't students required to join an afterschool activiy? And if they can't find one that they like, then they have to make one (minimum 3 members). Also, high school is not compulsory like in other countries. That's why high schools can be so selective. Despite not being compulsory nearly everyone goes. I think it's like 99% of people go on to high school or something like that.
