Elongated avocados tend to have much smaller seeds which means more avocado! Tennis ball sized avocados tend to have golf ball sized seeds. I own a restaurant that goes through about 35-50 avocados a day so I tend to notice these things.

I agree with you for the most part, though I've bought some round shaped avocados that had small seeds. I recently bought a bunch of round ones (I was picking the heavier ones), and to my horror, the seeds were huge. So, my guess is that if it weighs heavier than average, it means the seed is bigger, so I would go with the round ones if it doesn't feel too heavy. I'm going to put this theory to the test. :) I was researching to see if anyone came to the same conclusion as me.

We have them 3 for a dollar in Georgia, but you have to go to an Asian or Mexican Market. They have much better produce with a bigger variety. I love finding things like purple yams, they are so good. Good tips John, thanks!

I look for darker avos that slightly yield to pressure (like al dente pasta, same principle). Then I pull back the nubby. If it’s bright green, I push the nubby back in and take that one. The best way to get to the flesh: cut stem to stern, then turn and cut stem to stern again, into quarters. The sections fall away from the pit. Super easy to remove the peel; no scraping needed. I eat a small avocado for breakfast most days (on toast). Mash with a potato masher, add 1/2 tsp of lime juice and a little Himalayan pink sea salt. Yum!

Florida avocados are the tastiest. My mom would send me huge ones from her yard. They have a very buttery taste. Sure miss them. In Missouri I can get only half. Some are better than others. I prefer California ones. They are also much more expensive here. I buy them every week.

I buy them soft and dark. (ripe) And I don't know what kind they are but my favorite are the long and smooth ones. I really don't think they're the Californias, but they have a cheesecake/boiled egg-like texture. Unfortunately, most here are the bumpy Mexicans:/ They're too juicy and have more of a cantaloupe type texture. It bothers me.

It's nearly impossible to find a properly ripened avocado in a store. For one thing, they DO NOT ripen on the tree no matter how long you wait. Ever. So if it's soft already it's been sitting around the market for quite a while. The best thing is to buy hard but perfect ones and ripen them yourself at home in a paper bag at room temperature. Once they are ripe put them in the fridge without any kind of bag. The skin protects them from drying out. Once in the fridge they keep a pretty long time.
