On this episode of Healthytarian Living, holistic teacher Evita Ochel (www.evitaochel...) shares how to eat an avocado. The video includes a demo of its preparation, sharing about the fruit's nutritional benefits, buying tips, storing, meal ideas and more.
*NOTE: Take extra care and be mindful when using your kitchen knives to cut avocados or remove pits. The degree of sharpness, the pressure you use, and type of knife you use will all make a big difference to the outcome, and YOUR safety is YOUR responsibility.*

About the Avocado Pit: Information about the avocado pit is NOT included in the video because this video is intended for everyday eating for the general audience and the avocado pit is NOT a common or easy part of the avocado to eat, nor is it necessary or proven safe in certain quantities. The pit requires an intensive preparation process in order to make it possible to eat without hurting one's teeth or choking, and it requires tools, like a high-powered blender or dehydrator, that many people will not have, making it impractical to consider or recommend to most people. Even though the pit is edible, and just like any other "plant seed" it does contain nutrients and health benefits, it is medicinal in its chemical composition and its safety and dosage have NOT yet been established. This means that it should be treated more as a medicine, than a food, and used with conservative wisdom after thoroughly learning about its properties, risks, and how they may influence one's health. Consider the apple seed or apricot kernel seed, as other such similar examples. These contain compounds that can be medicinal or toxic, depending on how they are used. According to the California Avocado Commission, "The seed of an avocado contains elements that are not intended for human consumption." www.california...

For a bachelor who stumbles about,making his own meals and trying to eat healthy this is great information. I'd never thought about peeling the skin off - always just stuck a spoon in and scooped it out, ignoring the darker green area near the skin.and throwing it out, Beautifully presented - clear and concise . Very impressed!

I scoop with a spoon, too. I have no problem getting the meat near the skin. In fact, when I scoop, I leave less fruit on the skin than Ms. Ochel leaves using her messy extra steps of peeling. If I want slices, I scoop out the entire avocado half - no need to quarter - there is virtually no fruit left on the shell.

I like avocados by themselves with a little salt. And 3 times now I've had 2 of them for lunch at work. And they really are helping me lose weight too. But it's great to know just how unique they are when it comes to the many health benefits they have. And they're a lot better for us than they seem according to their appearance.

Never had one until today, 12/3/2023. I’m far from proud and I shopped at Aldi big green bin and found a case avocado 🥑(approximately 50). Cut, peeled, salted and ate them and omg… so very tasty. Saving the seed to hopefully grow. I thank God/Jesus for leading me there and providing me food.

Thanks for all of this. I have been cutting my avocados all wrong all these years. Other KZbinrs have praised avocado as the ideal fruit, and one of them recommended combining with radish. I tried it and found that the mildness of the avocado tamed the bitterness of the radish and made a nice salad. I will be eating both much more often now! Thanks again!

I learned from Dr Mercola that they can be kept in the fridge for a few days. It slows down the ripening process. I take one or two out and place them on the counter at a time and let them ripen as this gentle woman suggests in this video. Great presentation BTW. Someone mentioned Gold Standard. I agree.

I hate to go to the store since is far away. Maybe from now on I'm going to keep them In the refigerator, not in the freezer, In order to avoid any negative side effect of the frozen state. Fabulous video, recently my endroconologist told me Im prediabetic, & wanted to put me on meds, i asked. If its ok to hold off, until next labs, so I can get real serious with my diet, he said ok. Im startung to eat avocados every day, ive cut back a lot of things that have sugar, and have been eating a lot of plant based foods. Love your tips, TY for your time.
@Healthytarian
@Healthytarian 7 ай бұрын
You are very welcome, and thank you for your comment. You can most definitely reverse the condition of being prediabetic. It is essential to remove as many processed foods as possible, and eat as high of a diet in whole, plant foods, as you can. While including an avocado is a good idea, one food will not change the overall biochemistry of your body. It is essential to get most of the foods that you eat each day to come from the right foods and not the wrong ones. Getting to a healthy weight is also essential to avoid diabetes. Best wishes!

Excellent video! I eat avocado every day.. guac made with lime juice, minced garlic and a fresh chopped chilli needs no salt. Tomato or onion tends to make the guacamole too wet, but it’s really good as a side dish with roasted veg or salad. Store with air excluded from the container and oxidation is minimised, and it freezes well.

She is so right about the health benefits. Little something I do to keep from slipping and cutting myself. If an Avocado is ripe, you can use a plastic knife to cut them, just as evenly as a steele knife. The ripe skin on an Avocado is more fragile than it looks. I eat one everyday and haven't used a steel knife in years.

I eat one medium sized avocado for breakfast with some natural yogurt and a banana. I have completely given up greasy fast food and diet drinks and sodas. I don't eat any processed sugar. All the sugar that i get is from fruits and vegetables. I have lost 15 pounds in the past 1,5 months just because of this simple change in my diet. I don't eat red meat anymore and have moved on to fish and chicken (on occasion). I haven't began exercising yet but i will soon, im lazy i know. I'm at 225 now but i'm dropping fast. I’d like to add another way of slicing avocados. I live alone and have a small appetite. If I slice around the fruit widthways, I can use a third for my first meal and pop the unused avocado in the fridge. Next day, I slice around widthways again to take off the next third, (leaving the pit in the fruit) to enjoy the following day. This way, I can use large avocados which are better value and make them last for three portions. Great instructional video - thanks so much.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your wife. It has surely been a huge transition for you if she was responsible for meal preparation and I hope all is going well for you making your own meals. Please know that even if you are cooking or prepping meals for one, namely yourself, it is truly worth it to eat in a healthy manner to take good care of yourself. I have worked with many adults who were widowers or single in the past who felt it wasn't worth the effort to learn how to cook and learn how to take care of their health using their food, but it so is!!! Especially in today's world where our healthcare systems are so broken, and so much of the suffering is unnecessary and can be avoided based on how we take care of ourselves. Thank you for your nice feedback and sending best wishes your way!

Yes, for the half you want to save until tomorrow, you can also sprinkle on citric acid or ascorbic acid (vitamin C) (also called fruit fresh) available in the canning section of your grocery store. Also works for fresh peaches and for apples to keep them from turning brown. These are the active ingredients in lemon juice and lime juice.

@Healthytarian
@Healthytarian 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing Rosann. The problem is that it may taste great, but it would not be advised from a health perspective. Both sugar and milk are very problematic foods for our health. If we are going to make an effort and eat healthy foods, like avocados, it is best to eat them with other healthy foods.

Rosann, what we eat is not just about the effect it has on our weight, it is not just about calories or fat, BUT how these foods affect your organs, tissues, and cells, both in the present and for your future health. Both sugar and milk cause inflammation and acidity in the body that increase the risks of diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer long term.

Thank you-helpful. Also, since the pit is full of nutrition-with a Vitamix you can have it in a blender: avocado, almond milk, banana plus other fruit-makes a wonderful smoothy. You can store in mason jars that can be vacuumed with the meal saver attachment. Try the seed in a smoothy if you have a good enough blender-but be careful a Ninja won’t hold up.

As an ex educated chef, I must say you have presented a very fine video here. Good information with a simple and complete presentation. You covered all of the points I would have. I have subscribed. My only feedback is about your comment of making guacamole in a blender. For me, I never do that. Maybe I'm a purist, but I only make my guacamole by hand, as it is easier to control the texture you desire (rough to smooth), taste test for the right flavour, and using a blender promotes the guac turning brown quicker if not eaten right away even if you cover it to seal out air and prevent oxygenation.(but who can hold off eating fresh guacamole? ;)
@Healthytarian
@Healthytarian 7 жыл бұрын
Really appreciate your comments and feedback Dr Gregory. Thank you so much! And I very much agree with you about the guacamole. I have tried making it fully by hand, half by hand with half by blender mix, and fully by blender, and modify based on use needs or preference of the day. I share and show most of that in my guacamole video here (kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHbTl3x3hqp8jZo).

Thank You for producing a video that is easy to follow along and learn. No fake computer generated voice and not rushed. Your video was easy to understand. Actually, with zero experience with cutting open an Avocado I found out I was doing everything right, but now I’m certain of that. I just got lucky I guess. I just attacked a Avocado the same way I cut open an Orange or an Apple. However I was completely and totally unaware of the health benefits of consuming Avocado’s daily. Yesterday I had 2 Hard Boiled Eggs, 1/2 an Avocado sprinkled with ground Flax Seeds. It held me all day until 5:00 pm and we made a homemade Taco Salad with 1/4 of an Avocado. I just woke up at 5:00 am and I’m not immediately hungry. Hopefully I can shed 5 lbs by Thanksgiving. I’m looking so forward to the health benefits of eating Avocado daily. God Bless You.
