Good tutorial. Another tip may be looking at the logo of the ball to see how much spin there is whether it’s heavy spin or a no spin serve.

Sometimes, the opponent puts so much spin on it, that you actually can’t attack it or take it early. So yeah sometimes you have to wait a little bit for the ball.. all in all good tips I’m gonna keep an eye on the racket angle now, when I receive the serves.

Great tips as usual! Some players when they can't handle a serve have the intention to go closer to the table. And try to catch the serve earlier but are so close they don't have time to decide topspin, flip or push. I normally advise them to take a half step back especially on heavy spin serves. Moving forward on a serve is easier then moving backwards. Thanks for sharing Dan and Tom!

Another tip: Return long services a bit later, because the ball has less spin with time. Great video 👍🏼

It's important to mention listening to the contact sound of the blade on ball in addition to visual cues. Soft contact is usually spinny and loud sound is usually fast and generally topspin.

Is that why players stamp their feet on contact, to mask the sound?

Hi Tom & Dan, Thanks for this very useful & helpful video lesson. Returning serve is one of the most difficult skills in TT. It will benefit to many lesser experience players to enjoy the sport. Thanks. 👍🏓
@murtuzaarbaz23214 жыл бұрын
Situation gets tricky people hide their elbow until they make contact with the ball. Like having body covering up your racket and elbow positions, they will toss the ball near their making the toss visible, making the contact visible with the racket (makes the service legal), it's becomes harder to judge the amount of spin on the ball. Also I learned few points through this video, thanks a lot.

yeah me neither, i always kept an eye on the bat angle. this could be useful for simpler serves . howeverm you could have a flat elbow and drop the wrist to confuse people. ultimately it is the angle of the racket with respect to the ball that counts.

@@TableTennisDaily Serve RETURN and following your own serves with 3rd ball attacks are the keys, I'd say. Your serves can be average, as long as you're great at following them with attacks on the 3rd or 5th balls. You can nullify your opponent's top tier serves with great returns too, and that stops their 3rd or 5th ball attacks from being strong. In fact, it allows you to get in the first attack more often also. This is the plastic ball era. Serves were the key in the celluloid days because great returns couldn't really nullify great serves. You could actually win points on the serve a lot more often, which meant that you could feasibly try to go for points right from your serve. You didn't have to be as great at 3rd ball attacks because serve returns weren't as good. Also, it was less likely that the returner would get in the first attack. So yeah, serves were the key back then. But, I don't agree that they are now.

Not only that, but this video is telling 33,000+ low-level players (including whoever is reading this comment right now) exactly what to do to make their serves exactly the opposite of what Dan and Tom are telling us to read what we think the serve is. Eg. I will now practice making strong backspin with my elbow _high._ And, I will serve down the line with a strong body twist, because that body twist tells my opponent the serve is going to his _forehand._

Using these videos as visual aids and why you struggled, as these are real world examples and better than fabricating it in the studio. Just an observation. Other than that great tips and vid.

The hardest serve to return is the backspin half long which the second bounce is 1cm behind the white line. I totally can't return it because it's hard to push short and difficult to attack. Also because I wouldn't want to damage my racket so I always have problems with that serve.
