While I appreciate the 201s ... I like the 15-91s from the 1950s best. Easy to find for cheap, larger bobbins, ruggedly durable, and reliable stitching.

I have 19 machines in total My favorite is my great grandmothers 1894 singer treadle, my most stylish is my featherweight, my tank is my 1928 white rotary, my best stitch is my Italian made Necchi, my most nostalgic is my 2 fiddle base, hand crank Frister and Rossmann.

I had a strategy for finding machines awhile back. I put an ad in newspaper here locally and told people I would be interested in the old sewing machines stored in their attics and garages. Actually, scored several free plus a featherweight and a pretty black 301A that came in a man's car trunk. He said he was sure the featherweight was just a salesman's sample as it was so small. No attachments, etc. but a serviceable case. Just need clean and oil. $20.00 - score! (I also have the brown 301A - I call it mocha)

I am a collector of mostly Singer vintage sewing machines. I agree with your top pick of best stitch being 201-2. I have picked up a few machines from folks who got them from relatives. One was a Singer 66 Red Eye from 1919, another was a Singer VS2 from 1886. You are lucky to be in a location where you can find machines like you have at thrift stores. I haven’t been so lucky. Great video! Thanks

I was lucky enough to buy a Singer Featherweight in 1972 for my high school graduation for $50, and it sews beautifully. I have all the attachments and the instruction book. Recently I sold my 2005 Pfaff, which was giving me a lot of problems, to a collector and bought a Baby Lock Jubilant that I’m still learning to use. I’ve owned a 1980 Kenmore with cams . In my teens my family owned a Singer Touch and Sew which I call Touch and Swear.

I have my Grandmothers singer treadle machine. She used this machine forever! I don't think she ever had an electric machine. I have not had the time to see if it still works, but now that I am retired, I will mess around with it and see. I also have been picking up older machines at thrift stores and yard sales as well. I just got a 70's Kenmore machine for $3.00, aluminum body that the owner stated it kept breaking needles, well they had the needle in backwards and the bobbin tension was off. Fixed that and it sews beautifully!

I sew on my Mom’s Phaff 362. My Dad bought it for my Mom when I was 3 for $800 and I am now 61. I love this machine!! I sew on it 3-4 days a week when I am not working as a staff floor nurse here in Indy at a rehab hospital. My Mom made all my choir dresses and prom/dance dresses on this machine. She taught me to sew on it when I was 13. I still remember making a top on a Sunday to wear it on a Monday.

Love that your husband understands the addiction and benefits - mine does not understand why I "need" another machine (ever) when I already have >15. Haha. I have a soft spot for Necchi's , particulary the 1940s BU Mira and the Supernovas. My mom had a 1970s Husqvarna Viking 6000 series machne that she used her whole life and made everything from apparel to costumes to household goods. It's the one I learned to sew on and it reminds me of my (deceased) mother every time I see it. IT's also a FANTASTIC machine with a low gear, strong as an ox, sews through anything, and minimal things to go wrong. I would *LOVE* a treadle machine. I really need a second house to keep my machines haha

Fun look at sewing machines. I grew up sewing on a Singer 201. My first personal sewing machine was a White portable. It had a zigzag feature! Then as a young married girl, I saved my money and bought a Sears machine with 2 boxes of cams with decorative stitches! When I went to the use and care sewing lesson on my new Sears machine, I asked our instructor what she thought was the best sewing machine. She closed the door and told us all about the Swiss made Bernina machine! LOL! I saved my money again and several years later bought the Bernina 830 Record. The cams were built-in and the stitch quality, the strong piercing power of that machine were so far above anything I had ever sewn on. Additionally, the sewing manual and the Bernina classes were where I first was introduced to fine sewing techniques. I’ve had many Bernina sewing machines since the 1970s. They have all been outstanding for my garment sewing addiction. I opened a sewing studio in 1990 where I taught garment sewing to children and adults. We moved to another state in 1993, so I sold off my collection of manual and computer Bernina sewing machines to my students. I opened another sewing studio in 2016, teaching garment sewing to children and adults. During Covid I couldn’t provide enough sewing classes for adults-a huge re-interest in learning to sew among adults of all ages. I closed the studio after the summer of 2022. I sold off most of my classroom sewing machines. My personal sewing machine is a Bernina 790+, and a 890 serger. I also purchased a Juki DDL9000 computer industrial machine which is a heavy duty, blindingly fast and accurate straight stitch machine. All purchased with the money I made from teaching sewing. I’ve had so much joy and made so many dear friends in teaching sewing and going to classes and seminars over the years. What a great skill to have and to pass on to the future generations!

I can't wait to acqauire 1, or 2, or many, many! I am also very inspired to make my own clothing. I am pretty good at buying old machines, a little better at fixing them up, but my sewing skills leave a lot to be desired. What a nice video! I have a Featherweight which I found here in Holland at a quilt fair. I am greatly surprised by the prices of these machines in the US, because the kind lady who sold it to me only asked $420 for it. It dates from 1949. Great video! I’ve learned a lot from watching y’all -and I grew up watching Little House as well. I just picked up a black Singer 301A short bed from Goodwill. Perfect case, original accessories box, buttonholer and zig zagger, plus 6 bobbins AND it included a “tuneup kit” from The Featherweight Store as well! What we didn’t see was the button pedal foot control was missing a large chunk of plastic right in the middle. We’re going to work on rehabbing but she’s definitely functioning which was awesome. Seven of my machines have come from Goodwill-two are currently in Maryland, to be driven down in July by a family member. Take care and happy hunting!

Thank you so much! That is very kind of you :) I actually just kind of made it up as I went along. There is no pattern. When I started my own channel, Stacey (my beautiful wife) talked me into making my own wall hanging for a backdrop in my videos. It was my first journey into the world of applique. Basically, I drew up a rough sketch of the layout, downloaded clipart images of vintage machines, deconstructed each machine into layers and cut the shapes out on our Cricut machine, picked some stained glass looking fabric, sewed the machine bits on top, and basically made a 7 foot table runner out of it. I am very new to sewing but Stacey is an awesome and patient teacher. Thanks for asking and thank you for watching!

My 1952 necchi BU nova only has straight or zig zag stitches. No decorative stitches available even in 1952. The Viking 2000 does have cams though so in just a few years technology advanced to have decorative stitches as an option.

I enjoyed your video and the great information you provided. I would like to start collecting vintage sewing machines. The only vintage sewing machine I own is a Singer that my parents purchased for me when I was 8 years old. I still have the case and the clamp to hold it on the table. I made dolls clothes on it. The main sewing machines I use now are a Singer Heavy Duty and a Bernina 570. Do you buy vintage sewing machines that need to be restored? I would like to learn how to restore vintage sewing machines. Thank you so much for this awesome video.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the positive feedback. Yes, yes, yes...collect away :) Ya, the majority of our collection is from thrift stores in our area. They almost never come home without an issue or two. Sometimes they are locked up tight due to bent or broken parts, but most of the time people give up on them because they think they are broken but just need cleaned and lubricated. I say...get an old machine, start taking it apart, clean it up, oil anything that moves, put it back together, and enjoy the process. Once you do it a couple of times it is super easy :) Thanks for watching and following along!

I have a vintage 1948 117.812 kenmore By White (rotary) deluxe. It is brown cast aluminum and 3/4 size. It is 17lbs. I would never get a featherweight as this machine sews straight and true. It sews straight only but the stitch is perfect. Also have a German made 215-G which allows for feed dogs to be lowered.

That's great! The 201's are so beautiful and smooth. Great find! I would just play with the tension knob and experiment until you are happy with the stitch consistency. If you don't have any luck, try taking the lower bobbin out and adjusting the tension there. There is a really small screw on the front of the bobbin holder that adjusts the tension. Start with only 1/4 turns at a time until you feel a change in tension when you pull by hand. You will get the hang of it I am sure :) Thanks for watching and following along!

I wholeheartedly agree with you about the Singer 201-2. The very finest home sewing machine ever made by anyone. Most versatile, my pick is the Kenmore 158-1941. All metal, and the most useful built in stitches. The 401a can't do any stretch stitches, the Kenmore 158-1941 can, and does them beautifully. I would be VERY careful lifting the Singer 185. The plastic used degrades easily. For that category, my pick would be either the Kenmore 150-1030, or 158-1040. Much more versatile and lighter. Most stylish, Singer Rocketeers, hands down.

I’m so glad you rescue great older machines from thrift stores. I’ve done it too. It just breaks my heart when I see a once proud, once loved ❤ machine….that was someone’s mom or grandma’s, sitting there, cast off, on the shelf of a thrift store. They’re often mishandled or people mess with them, who don’t know what they’re doing, and really make a mess of them. What may have been just a tune-up can turn into a much more expensive repair. I still can’t believe that so many great machines sell for so little. I know, not everyone sews or appreciates the machinery, but many of these vintage machines were made to last many generations and should never be sent to the landfill! p.s. I sew on a Pfaff Creative 1471 from 1986 or 87….about 37 years old. I bought it used in 1988 so it was in good shape…only 1 minor repair. Every time I think about selling my Pfaff and getting a more current model, I think WHY? It was made in Germany and still sews like a champ! I also have a newer Brother sewing machine and the very popular Brother 1034D serger AND a few older machines that I’ve rescued (will likely sell) and I’ve sold a couple of other older machines too. 👍

Thanks for this interesting video. I'm not a collector, but my unicorn is a Pfaff 545-H4. With about 0.75" space under the presser foot it sews through almost everything non-metal, fingers and bones included, while it is still so elegant in performance. This "ballet tank" weighs about 70 lbs (just the machine head), and to me it's engineered to perfection. I have it running almost every day, and it hasn't ever let me down. The stitch is incredibly beautiful on top, I never had to adjust tension, whatever I've been sewing - and as we are of the same age, we just make a perfect couple 😉

I have my mothers 201, and other than sewing on it when I was in school, it’s in display now, because my mother and her sewing machine went hand in hand. Just from watching this, I think I’ll take it to my local repair man and let him clean and grease it, get it to where I won’t be afraid of breaking something by sewing with it. I had a friend call me and offered a featherweight that he said would take a couple stitches and stop;I was afraid to ask the price, and in my mind, I set a dollar amount that I wouldn’t go over. I pulled in my brave and asked the price-$25.00, I asked again because there’s no way! After they explained their price and why they were offering it to me, I made a counter offer, much more, because I could put in good conscience, steal this wonderful machine from them. We agreed I’d pay more than the asking price and that day I drove 1 1/2 hours there and back to get my hands on it. The case was included. I was able to find a vintage repair man who agreed to take a look at it, during the time when things were closed down. Just needed cleaning and a little adjustment. The repair was more than what I paid, but I still feel the value of the machine is above both the numbers added together.

That is wonderful. Thanks for sharing :) It is worth whatever it takes to keep these beautiful machines operational. It is moving that your mother's machine is held in such high regard to be on display in her honor, but it is even better to have it stitching and continuing the tradition of creation. Great work acquiring a working featherweight. I see it all of the time where the value of a machine becomes nullified to an owner because of its running condition. It's pretty much the same with other European brands that have lost their quality and heritage by shifting their production to developing countries.

Nice Video! You have some really great choices. I have several of the same choices. Singer 202-2 (x 2), Singer 185J (x2), Singer 221-1, Singer 301 & 301A, Singer 401A & 403A (x2), White Family Rotary, I don't have the Lark, but I have three other similar VS machines with leaf tension on top. I have several other Whites, but not the 173. I do like the clean lines of the 173, though. I enjoyed hearing your opinions as well. I have a particularly strong affinity toward Rotary machines, mostly New Home, but White & White made Kenmore, as well. I like the theme of your channel (NeverTooMany). I have 135, and have to maintain a database to keep track of which machines, what status, what location, which attachments parts, and which documentation. My most numerous badges are Singer (45) and Kenmore (32). You're absolutely correct, questions such as "which is your favorite, if you could keep only one?", well let's just say, we're not the right audience. If there were any that I were to say are not my favs, it would have to be vibrating shuttles, or even Long Bobbin Rotary. Although having said that, I seem to own ten of them. My biggest unicorn, acquired a couple years ago, is a National Two Spool. Mine happens to be badged as Western Electric, and a bentwood portable case that is badged as Graybar. Both National and Graybar were badges made by National.

Thank you so much! Sounds like you have quite the collection as well :) I agree, the White and Kenmore rotary machines are some of our favorites as well. Maintaining a database is a great idea. We never figured that we would end up with so many machines, but now that we have them, we should really consider creating a good list. Thanks for sharing and also thank you for watching!

I have 2 201's, but haven't used them, yet. Still haven't got them sorted out. So my picks would be: 1. Bernina 530/540/730. 2. Bernina. Any one. 3. Elna air electronic (this thing is TINY!) made in Switzerland. 4, several! 1896 and 1901 27's, Rollo's Rotoscillo, BSM (Vickers) 7000 in cream, my paternal grandmothers' machine. They are all VSM machines. 5. Has to be the Necchis! Mum's Supernova Ultra, Lelia, and the Lydia I was given. 6.The one prised out of my cold dead fingers: my beloved Bernina 1130...but I have so many backups now. The 2 most impressive: the Bernina 117k and 217n, industrials. BTW I'm in NZ. Some of mine have been given, some handed down, and quite a few I have bought.

I will be looking them up though so I know what to look out for in the future. I really appreciate your time in compiling this list. At this point in time, we do not have any Bernina or Necchi machines and that needs to change!!! Thank you for watching and following along! Good luck :)

I love your machines. I've had an old Singer similar to one of yours, but it's long gone, and a treddle which is also long gone to a stepdaughter, I think, and who knows where from there. I was married in 1958 and bought an old Bernina 117 K then. I still have it, but it's become a little heavy for me, and my daughter bought me a newer (barely used) Phaff. I sewed 4 kids clothes and mine for all those years, but am going to switch to the Pfaff. I've tuned it up, cleaned it up, and put all the accessories together to give to my son. He asked about it some time ago. If he doesn't want it, I'll find a new home for it, since I am downsizing. No collections here any more, but thanks for giving us a tour of your collection. Lynn

I'm not a collector, but when I saw you bring out that beautiful White machine, it was like seeing an old friend. My parents got me a new White back in 1962 when I was learning to garment sew. I don't know the model, but it was very similar to the White that you showed. I used it extensively until the early 90's when I got burnt out and gave up sewing and (I'm now ashamed to admit) donated it, thinking I'd never sew again, along with all my sewing supplies. A few years ago I got into quilting, and have a nice Juki, but I so wish I hadn't given away that White. It was built like a tank and performed so well.

A real joy to see these machines. That Singer sounded so beautiful. It sounded like a handmade stitch should sound, old craftsmanship. Although personally, I gravitate to machines that have that 50's - 60's look like the White. My era. Very stylish. The White was beautiful. fyi - You may want to change the format of your videos. You were in the center of every frame and we mostly saw you both instead of the machines. Put the focus on the machines, keep the camera on them. We only saw brief glimpses and back to speakers again. This is not a good format. Also improve your lighting. No machines in your lap, keep them on the table, good lighting and go around it so we see all sides and admire them.

Such an interesting channel! I currently have a new Janome which I enjoy, but also have my old Bernina 730 which I just love and I feel is a member of the family. I bought it in 1968 for $300 including the sewing table! They say that once the belt goes it can’t be replaced. I also have a 1939 featherweight that I’ve just been saving (haven’t used at all) for 50 years and I’m thinking of selling due to the high prices. Or maybe I should keep it…not sure! I’m 77 and don’t quilt or anything and don’t have any sewers in family to leave it to.

Thank you so much! I am glad you found our channel. I have heard so many great things about Bernina machines but have never had the pleasure of trying one out. It is definitely on our list! How awesome that you have had yours since you bought it new :) I am super envious of your Featherweight. I am sorry that you don't have anyone in your family that sews and would want it. I am sure someone would love to give it a home. And like you said, with today's prices, you could make a few bucks as well :) The featherweight is such a special little machine that if it makes you happy just knowing that you own it then keep it forever :) Thanks for sharing. You have some great thrift stores! I like that as a couple, you both have an interest in those beautiful machines. Love that 185 in green...so cute!!! I learned on a machine similar to your White machine when I was a kid. Unfortunately my mom's machine was lost in a move. I thought it was a Singer, but now I am starting to wonder if it was a Brother or White. I recently added a 201-2 and then a 301A to my mix of modern machines. On the 301A, I first sourced one for my brother and I liked it so much I had to find one for myself. The cradle and ease of portability is so unique. I love both machines, but now using the 201 for my quilting. I have a total of 6 machines and each for a different use...embroidery, serger, coverstitch, industrial, and the 2 vintage models. I use them all, but I think I am capped out unless I see my mom's old machine somewhere. I am out of space. Thanks for sharing some of your favorites.

Really enjoyed this! Got into using vintage machines a while ago. I put a Featherweight that had only been used for display into service because the two electronic machines I owned at the time went on the fritz in the middle of holiday sewing. OMG, I haven't looked back since and it is now my official travel machine! Eventually I purchased a 401a because I wanted another vintage machine (love that you can service them yourself) that could do zig-zag. After a bit of research I came to the same conclusion as you did in that it was very versatile for a vintage machine. Because of your video, now I think I'm going to look for a 185! I like the look of it and love the idea of it being as portable as a 221.

It will replace our 185 as our travel machine. It is not as cute as a 185 but it is much lighter and lays down a better stitch. Ya, the 401a is an amazing machine. So many people absolutely love them! There are so many wonderful machines out there waiting to be discovered...I hope you find them all!!! Thanks for watching and following along!

I really enjoy your channel and collection of sewing machines!! My mom taught me to sew in the 70’s on her Elna with cams. I regret to this day not taking it after she died. By then (80’s) I had a new Singer machine that I used a lot without issue. Fast forward- like many, I needed to learn quilting a few years ago. Then I discovered vintage machines!!! Oo!! Way too much fun! I have the mocha 301(made in Elizabeth,NJ) and an older Singer that I can’t pinpoint the model of having been made in Germany at a time when the info was destroyed. By studying the shape I believe it to be a 201-3 or 201D. I need to learn simple repairs and maintenance of these marvelous machines!

Thank you so much! I appreciate the positive feedback! That is great that your mom taught you to sew on what is now a vintage Elna :) We just picked up our first 301a and it is also the mocha like yours. Wow is it amazing! Very interesting about your German made Singer. I am not familiar with the 201-3 or the 201D models. They sound fascinating though. As far as maintaining these old machines, I would start out the way we did...if you see a screw, try removing it and see what happens. If you see a metal on metal rotating assembly, try adding a couple drops of sewing machine oil to it. Before long, you will be making KZbin videos like us :) Thanks for watching and following along!

I just found your channel this morning! We have….a few machines at our house,lol. My biggest question is this- do you replace the cords before you use the machines? That’s a concern for me.
@NeverTooMany2023
@NeverTooMany2023 7 ай бұрын
That is great! Glad you found us :) As far as cords go...we only really replace/repair them if they show signs of damage or are not working. If the machine turns on and there is no sign of melting or fraying wire sheathing then you are probably ok. Give the wire a good test before using. You can bend it and twist it all along its length and feel for bulges and breaks. Test the continuity from end to end of each pole and if all looks good you are likely good to use it. Always error on the side of caution. If you see any sign of damage then replace/repair. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
