I use the .270 Weatherby Mag, and it is the best shooting round I have ever used. I once took a 250 pound feral hog from about 200 yards. Entered the chest slightly on its left side, when it came out, it took the entire right rear ham with it. It dropped instantly. Used the 140 grain Nosler bullet. Any rifle after this will be something in Weatherby Mag!

My main hunting rifle is a 300 RUM, 26" barrel, 180 grain Nosler Accubond. Using 95.0 grains of Reloader 25 my magnetospeed reads 3400 avg fps. I imagine a 28" barrel might get me 3475ish fps. The RUM matches the 30-378 for velocities with a touch less powder with no belt on the case.

Thanks for you list of favorites. The only changes I would make is to drop the 30-378 and add the 270 Wby. I would also have a 7mm Wby over the 6.5-300 by a tiny bit. I do wish that Weatherby would update the twist rates on the 270 in particular considering all the new long 277 bullets coming out, it's got the case capacity to really move out those 165-175 gr bullets. The 257 and 7mm could also use the faster twist rates as well.
@ReloadingWeatherby3 жыл бұрын
I would really like to see the 257 with a faster twist rate, the 270 WBY would also be sweet with a 1 in 8 twist.
@hawkeye44972 жыл бұрын
👍 Right on gerry35. Weatherby needs to tighten the twist rates. Long for caliber, high BC bullets are here to stay. The 270 and 7 Wby are outstanding cartridges. The barrels just need a tighter twist.

Just checking out your channel. By far, 30-378 is the best cartridge Weatherby designed. It shoots the flattest and hits hard enough to kill whitetail without destroying the meat. 338-378 is the most awesome of all. It’s more powerful than 338 Lapua.

You can hand load the .338-.378 Weatherby with a 256 grain Flatline bullet (and a few others as well) up to ~ 3290-3300 ft sec. with a G7 BC of .434 @ 3300 FPS here is the trajectory. At 300 yards with a 100 yard zero it drops -7.52”. At 500 it’s -30.93”. At 1000 yards it only drops -177.76”!!! I read an article weeks ago claiming the 26 Nosler, 6.5-300 WBY and 30-378 weatherby were the flattest shooting cartridges available. The winner of the 3 was the 6.5-300 at -212” of drop @ 1000 yards. I did some research and ran 100 rds through both of my chronographs. My cold bore shots were all 3325-3334 FPS with the 256 grain flatline (RL 33 powder), fed 215 primers. The max supersonic range at a standard atmospheric condition was .... 2370 YARDS! At that distance there was -1842.73” of drop and 709 ft/lbs. of energy! I didn’t even run any of the loads through my 30” Kreiger cut barrel just to be fair bc I get velocities 99.5-155 FPS more velocity out of that rifle. And as far as FACTORY loads are concerned, HSM has a 250 grain Berger OTM Hybrid load (with no listed velocities in the box or website) that is very close in velocity. 3345 FPS measured with my chronograph(s)! Almost identical actually. However, the G7 BC is .380 so it’s not quotes as flat but... at 1000 yards there is still only -173.53” of drop! YES! A factory load that still beats the supposed #1 flattest factory cartridge by 41”!!! Max Supersonic Range is 2109 yards.
@tacticalmattfoley2 жыл бұрын
@@Dmmartin141 Good, Lord!!! That is amazing. Thanks for taking the time to share this information. It's still hard to believe the supersonic range of those wildcats. This is a similar reason why the military switched from 300win mag to 300 norma mag in their new sniper platform. 338 Lapua mag is very, very close to 338-378 in performance and much cheaper. It boggles the mind why/how the military chooses particular cartridges like 300 Norma Mag. However the performance data for 6.5-300 is absolutely obscene. It's like the military chose the most expensive option possible because we need to stay with 30 cal bullets.
@craigleibbrand77612 жыл бұрын
That 30-378 only achieves 150 ft per second more REALISTIC velocity then the 300. The rifles are too long, too heavy, to Bulky and has to have a muzzle break.

@@bartowpd342 While you didn't ask me, I'll make a suggestion and you can do what you will with it. Let's get this out of the way I have a .257 Roy. When I look at adding a new rifle I have started to not duplicate calibers and even have been selling ones that I have multiple of a caliber. Yes I can have multiple of the same, but as I've aged why? I have calibers that I can hunt a wide range of game with. Having dedicated varmint rifle as well as say a elk rifle doesn't mean they won't work on other game, just that I can cover different calibers. In other words buy a caliber you don't already have covered. Variety is the spice of life. Enjoy what ever you do.

@@bartowpd342 lol, I can relate. I like fast flat shooting and the.257 Roy fits that bill, besides it was Roy's favorite 😁. I think under normal conditions you will find brass or loaded rounds easier to find. I saw your mix of 6.5 that's why I suggested something else. Around here 6.5 and a version of the .300 is the majority of what the gun shops have in stock. They tell me it's because it's what everyone wants and when I pointed out several of these guns have been in their rack for months they ignore me 🙄. Give us some options or don't complain when I order online and have it shipped to you. I have a 220 swift as well for speed. The need for speed kills, at least on the other end... Your .308 like mine with proper thinking is a good elk round that can be used on lighter animals. Great round in my book, which I believe is why it's stayed revelant all these years. As you know it uses the same bullet as all the .300 rounds. Plenty of bullet options. Would like to see more for the .257. BTW, I have several boxes of .300wby brass if you decide to go that way. Very versatile without having to have an arsenal of hunting rifles in your gun safe. The 30/378 is horribly inefficient. To take advantage of the huge case you need a 31+ inch long barrel.

You are correct. But you don't get a Weatherby for its efficiency

@@ReloadingWeatherby I have a .270 and .375 Weatherby which are quite efficient. The 30/378 in particular is inefficient because of the huge case/bore ratio. For example, you're burning maybe 50% more powder for 5% gain in velocity. That 30/378 round in particular is a "wildcat" meant for extremely long range target shooting with custom built rifles with very long heavy barrels.

My dad had a 240 Weatherby back in the 70's. Very accurate, but shot the barrel out quickly.
