Back in 1978 I decided I wanted a Weatherby mark 5. I had to decide between a .270 Weatherby or a .300 Weatherby, because I love .270s. I chose a .300 Weatherby and have never regretted it. The back of the old 1970s ammo boxes had this printed on the bottom. "This is the most versatile cartridge in existence." They were not kidding..

I collect Mark V Deluxe rifles. They all shoot great and are beautiful. My favorite is the 340, but if I had to choose just one it would be the 7mm Weatherby. Amazing performance with 160 grain Nosler Partition. Just a tick slower than 28 Nosler with 70% less recoil.

Eventhough it's yet to be released,I like the new 338.Matching the Win Mag is not a bad thing,and it has a rebated rim instead of a belt.The bigger 338s give a bigger thump on both ends,therefore making them a little harder to shoot.I wouldn't want want one in a flyweight rifle,but in a standard 8ish lb.rifle it's fine.The Win Mag has demonstrated over the years,that there is very little it won't do inside normal hunting ranges.Im not a fan of long range and ultra long range shooting at animals,so the new 338 would actually be my choice in that caliber.

My 378 has a # 3 contour and no break. It can be a challenge to zero off a bench. It generates about 78 ft lbs of recoil that comes at you fast. However, when shooting off hand and off sticks it is manageable. I have shot several 1 hole groups at 100 yards (3 shots). It’s a good round Nilgai and African animals. Just shy of 6,000 ft lbs of energy and as flat shooting as a 300 Win Mag. Shoot tough bullets.

Look hard at the 338-378 over the 378. Not near as much recoil, and hits plenty hard with the 225 Barnes. I took a New Mexico bull 6x6 at 630 yards with mine all the way across the canyon on the other side. Took almost 3 hours to get to him after dark. Was dead as could be. Love my Wby's.

I have 5 Weatherby rifles in WBY cartridges and one MkV in 416RM. I am a huge fan of WBY rifles and I agree with your listing. If you want to shoot flat and hit hard WBY is the way to go. I hope to be able to collect the rest of the calibers in MKV's before they throw dirt on me. I just like to shoot them and load for them. It would be hard to pick a favorite but I really like my .378 which contrary to rumors about WBY rifles shoots sub 1" groups.

As long as you place your bullets 270 WM will do. Would much rather have a 300, 340 WM though. They will handle all angles shots a lot better cuz be honest, HOW MANY GIANT ONCE IN A LIFETIME BULLS EVER GIVE YOU THE BROADSIDE POSE. One time my brother went out on a guided elk hunt back in 80 and he took his 300WM . They saw a Monster Bull across a canyon at 600 yards. The guide wanted him to try it but to his credit he said no way. That's too far and I never practised that far ,besides he would be shooting into a heavy wind. They let him go but found a big spike later that day at around 75 yards. He put 2 180 gr nosler partitions behind the shoulder and the elk barely flinched , he was gonna shoot again and the elk collapsed. He could,nt believe it and the guide replied YEAH I SEE IT ALL THE TIME, ALWAYS BRING ENOUGH GUN. He said one time a guy came out with a 25_06 rem and the guide told FORGET IT , you go get at least a 7mm mag and up or you ain't going. THE GUY REFUSED AND THE GUIDE REFUNDED HIS MONEY cuz he sat in camp for 14 days refusing to listen to a PRO.

Oh no, it was going so well till you got to the 338 rpm. Lol. I’m actually pretty excited about that cartridge. It does some pretty good numbers when paired with the 230 grain eld-x bullet. I think it’s going to be a hell of a mid long range hunting caliber. Something like 700 yards and under. The retained energy is awesome. If in a 8 lb. Rifle, the recoil should be comfortable and with the design it should be a cartridge that a rifle could probably hold 5 rounds of it. Good job on the list and I enjoyed the video.

I also agree with the 300 WBY as number one, simply awesome.The 257 is fun to shoot a great caliber. I will note that I don't jump up and down when I think about a 6mm.I own three 243 s and never hunted with them.I did let a friend use one and I put a drive on for him and he shot a big doe. I must say the gun performed great and the 100-grain core lockt was impressive. So I thought why not try a 240. I found some brass and loaded with Reloader 22 and had a great day at the range. Lets see how they perform on deer, it really was a fun gun to shoot. Next time in might move higher on the list, Just saying.

It makes it interesting that you bring up the subject of barrel twists. Most slow twists were made for the mid range hunting projectiles of their time. Their construction didn't necessitate faster twists. Additionally, slower twists are an enhancement to speed which was Roy Weatherby's aim aside from very good brass and very strong actions these twists achieved speed and stability for the cup and core projectiles of their time which are shorter than several of the newer ones; in particular the monolithic ones and the extra long for caliber bullets used in long distance target shooting which are recent. In Europe, twists are quite often slower than in the U.S. The primary reason is due to the general use of mid range cup and core factory off the shelf ammunition as opposed to reloaded ammunition. The more recent off the shelf ammunition match their claimed speed contrary to the older ones, making reloading unecessary if one is after a high quality, fast and efficient hunting bullets. Everything has improved including rifles' qality compared to those in years past. In the U.S. where there are proportionately many more reloaders as well as the increasing use of faster twists adapted to monolithic projectiles, copper being less dense than lead creating longer bullets, it's understandable that commercial twists have evolved in the same direction to serve these more recent requirements. This of course doesn't exclude the fact that when longer, heavy for caliber bullets were used, even as far back as a century ago by the military, twists were generally faster for these particular rifles.

I own both the to 1:04 p two, the 257 mag. and the 300 mag. They both have been bedded, action and trigger work and a brake on the 300. I will say they are two great rifles that will do about anything you could ask of the two respective calibers. The 257 will shoot 1/4" groups with 120 gr. Partitions. The 300 will consistently shoot 3/4" groups or a little better if I do my part again using partitions. Both of these calibers are flat shooting and hard hitting. Speed definitely kills faster and I believe more humanly. I would like to own or at least shoot the 270 Weatherby magnum and the 257-300, always thought they would do a fine job. I never had them because I have a 7mm STW and it does everything the 270 mag will do and I already have the 257 mag so I guess that's why I don't have the 257-300. Darn! The reason you pick the 416 weatherby over the 460 weatherby is partly because of the notorious hard recoil of the 460 and also because the 416 seem to in alot of cases penetrator better than the 460 and 458s especially when your talking about the weatherby whichis insanely fast for a 416.

The .224 was a curious design decision, to be sure. People expected Weatherby cartridges to be The Fastest, and the .224 didn't beat the .22-250, much less the 220 Swift. It's odd that the .220 Rocket wasn't selected, but perhaps they were concerned about barrel life. Instead, they chose less performance in brass that couldn't be formed from anything else, which didn't help matters much. The .240 is a decent round, but the .257 is a whole lot more than decent. Why buy a .240 when the .257 is so much better?

Interesting. I wish you’d explain that high velocity bullets do not have linear external ballastics. That is, it’s one thing to look at numbers and another thing to look at the hole it creates on a living target. I have had both .270 Win and .270 Weatherby Mag, and the difference ballistically speaking is not linearly related to the 300% more damage seen in the Weatherby wound. High velocity bullets tend to splatter in a way, or cause a chaotic turbulence as they pass into an animal, tearing it with more than just it’s payload/bullet. It’s almost as if it takes part of the environment with the bullet.

It is hard to displace a 22-250. Back in the day writers ruined and killed off high velocity cartridges like the 220 Swift and 264 Winchester Magnum. They all scared the public to death over throat erosion. Cleaning and cooling cycles had not been established and impacted carbon and chamber stretching was not discovered until years later. Overbore seems to be the normal now. In a hunting cartridge you have little to worry about. Varmint gun on a prairie dog town or target range changes everything.

For the most part I agree with your rankings. I sometimes wonder however if you truly understand the philosophy behind some of Weatherby’s thought. You keep saying everyone wants to shoot heavy, High BC bullets and that is not true. Sure it’s a trend and it’s a horrible one at that. IMO it is promoting unethical behavior in hunting. I digress, what you also need to know is there is still a huge number of hunters that want speed. Speed equals flat shooting at normal (and ethical) hunting distances. 100Gr in the .257, 150gr in the .300, 185 GR in the .340, 127 GR in 6.5-300 are some examples of “laser” performance. I am currently working on a load to get 3550 out of a 130gr bullet in my 7mmRoy. This requires less thought while in the field. Gives you much more reach for your POI circle. Don’t have to have monster weight scopes and huge barrels and pack a shooting bench on your back to go hunting. I also believe you need to broaden your research parameters. The RPM is faster then the PRC than the 25fps that you showed. The RPM will run right close to the .264 Win Mag. One thing you got to remember with reloading manuals. The competition. Nosler always way under rates the Weatherby as that’s their main competition with the Nosler rounds. The PRC is a Hornady loading so they don’t want the RPM to outshine it. This is why us handloaders can easily outperform the manuals without even really pushing it.

I think Weatherby can up their game by increasing twist rate of their gun barrels for heavier higher BC/SD bullets . An example would be a the 378 magnum loaded with a heavier than normal 300 gr. bullet. Like a 375 gr bullet . The heavier bullet will have greater SD for greater penitration and less stress on bullet construction due to lower velocity. The bullet would maintain it's velocity better especially if it is streamlined for higher BC. Roy Weatherby' believe d in high velocity and he made his line of Cartridges with large powder capacity. He made it tuff for bullet makers of the day to build bullets that would hold together. Many PHs in Africa did not care for Weatherbys as much because of it. With plain cup and core you had to go with heavier bullet weight to prevent blow ups and over expansion of bullets. A 375 grain Nosler partitions loaded in a 378 Weatherby magnum would be awesome. Maybe a 400 grain bullet.

@@jk-kr8jt I got years on ya. Im talking about the days when Weatherby was still new and British cartridges and rifles were the mainstay of the time. Cup and core bullets designed for 375 H&H and 30-06 velocity was not up to the task at Weatherby magnum velocity on thick skin game. Roy Weatherby' is most responsible for starting the magnum crazy back in the day. I remember when the 257 and 300 Weatherby was the top of their class . Remington and Winchester was always behind Weatherby in velocity. When I was a kid Weatherby was the velocity King.
@jk-kr8jt
@jk-kr8jt 2 жыл бұрын
@@jaybailleaux630 hello Jay, all very valid points. Yes, Roy pretty much started the high-velocity era. Or at least he sure capitalized on it. Even keeping the belt when it was unnecessary. Roy was a marketer and showman and really build Weatherby, Inc. in that mold. You are correct sir in some respects that the bullets of the 1940s and 1950s were not up to the demands of high-velocity. In the 1980s I was often unpleased not being able to recover a perfect mushroom from game. Those bullets seemed to break the shoulder and grenade the lungs and heart. But one shot kills and little if any follow up, what was I unpleased with? In the 90s I switch to Nosler Partition bullets (actually a cup and core with a mantel in the middle), because they worked so well in my 375. Great bullets but I'm not sure game dropped as quickly as before. Some PHs, guides, gun guru's, "experts", will still drone on about bullets being to fast and slower bullets work better because they spend more time in the animal. If that's not convoluted logic I don't know what is. I would imagine that at one time plenty of hunter, in the race to gain velocity, chose light for caliber bullets. Instead of using 180s in a 300, they'd go with 120s or 150s. Pre mono-metal those wouldn't be good choices at high-velocity. Too, most then, and today, don't seem to understand external ballistics. To your point on higher BC bullets, might not be the faster muzzle velocity, but will retain it's velocity better. But I'm like a lot of hunters, set in my ways, so I'll stick with 180s in the 300, 250s in the 340, 300s in the 375, 400s in the 416 and 500s in the 458. Nothing wrong with higher BC bullets, provided they're designed and built for game not targets. So I'm convinced that Weatherby's got a bit of a bad rap in the early days based on too light of bullets, poor bullet design and bad shooting brought about by recoil, inexperience and bad marksmanship. But I don't know of a guide or PH who will not hunt with a man who carries a Weatherby. They might worry he's a man with more money than experience, but they'll still do their job. All the best to you.

@@jaybailleaux630 Jay, was Roy ahead of the times or did he create the time of HV ? I'm glad you brought up Keith. As a young kid I read Keith and O'Connor. Different approaches to what I considered the same "problem", putting big game on the ground. Keith, big bullets. O'Connor HV. Who was right? My young mind determined Roy was. Why not have the best of both, heavy bullets at HV ? Worked back then and it works even better today. Plus I just dig the racey lines and walnut of a Mark V rifle and it's diamond pistol grip. Glad you brought up doubling the velocity v doubling the bullet weight. As a youngster, probably 7 or 8, I used to study ballistic tables. That when I realized exactly what an increase in muzzle velocity could do. I created tables showing/demonstrating this. It was until much later that I realized I had backed my way into physics and the formula for kinetic energy. The time I could have saved if I knew K= 1/2mV². But I'd have missed the fun. So guns do have a purpose in school 🙂. Keep well and keep the barrel of that Swift nice and warm. Cheers, Jeff

Interesting video. However I bet if you had 10 people rank them you’d get 10 different responses. Mine would be very similar to yours but I do disagree with your placement of the 7mm Weatherby. When this cartridge was introduced it would’ve been awesome. But by today’s standards it’s mediocre at best. The STW and RUM blow it out of the water and I know that it’s not quite comparing apples to apples but the 7.21 Firebird is so far ahead it’s night and day different. But you weren’t comparing things evenly when you stated it’s 200 fps faster than the 7mm Remington Magnum either. Because it most certainly is not. You are comparing basically a hotrodded hand loaded cartridge (the Weatherby) to a mundane factory loaded one (the Remington). I don’t know any serious hand loaders who can’t improve the Remington’s ballistics to easily within 50 or 100 fps of the Weatherby all things being even. The 7mm Weatherby is a very good cartridge and definitely deserves more credit but it has lagged too far behind and if Weatherby were to come up with a more competitive one it’d probably be a 7mm-378 and if it followed suit with the 30-378 vs 7.82 Warbird then it would still be behind but would at least be closer to the velocity lead.

Thanks for commenting! I was using data from the Hornady reloading book. 7mm Rem at 2900 FPS with 175 and 7mm Weatherby at 3100 FPS. Now obviously each rifle is going to shoot differently. You could have a faster shooting Rem mag and a slow shooting Weatherby. If I used factory ammo in my comparison the difference would be even bigger. Weatherby would shoot a 150gr at 3300 FPS and Rem mag would be at 3050 FPS.

@@ReloadingWeatherby Yes there can definitely be big differences between rifles. But one thing most people don’t take into account from Handloading books is that usually figure a 26 inch barrel for the Weatherby and a 24 inch barrel for the Remington again not comparing apples to apples. About 25 years ago I owned two 7mm rifles one chambered for the Weatherby and the other for the Remington. I am an avid hand loader and I could never get more than 75 ft./s more from the Weatherby. In the past 2 years I have acquired 2. One with a 24 “ barrel and one with a 26” barrel. Shooting Weatherby Factory 175 grain bullets They are just shy of 3,100 FPS! I have shot 3 shots into 3/4” groups at 250 yards out of a Factory Mark V Deluxe. It has no real advantage until it hits a 170. Then it comes to life. It holds 81.5 to 82 grains. Velocities will pass the 7mm Ultra Mag and the STW. I own 9 different Weatherby Magnum Cartridges. I think in order to rank them, it depends on what you want to hunt. Here is what I like. 1. 300 Weatherby Magnum. 2. 257 Weatherby Magnum. 3. 270 Weatherby Magnum. 4. 7mm Weatherby Magnum 5. 378 Weatherby Magnum. Flat as a 300 Win Mag. 6. 340 Weatherby Magnum. 7. 6.5X300 Weatherby Magnum. 8. 416 Weatherby Magnum. Some game laws prohibit sub 40 Cal for dangerous game 9. 240 Weatherby Magnum. Much prefer a 25-06. 460 Weatherby Magnum. Recoil is massive. Follow thru is long and recovery for 2nd shot on charging game is slow. Designed for PH in mind.

Thanks for sharing! Especially about the 7mm Weatherby. I am getting faster velocities with my 300 Weatherby. I can get 3315 FPS with a 175 gr and 3150 FPS with a 200 gr.

If I could have but 1 weatherby it would be the flat shooting 340. For elk moose and bear its ideal. I have no use for the 7mm cuz I have a 7mm.rem mag which is the weatherby,s twin and a 25/06 which is basically a magnum less 257 weatherby.
