Ardbeg 10...smells like a dumpster fire of band aids and pine tar...doesn't taste much better either. The Elijah Craig, however is magical! Great list! Started to widen my horizons by venturing into whiskey/bourbon/scotch during a walleye fishing trip to Canada. I'm a huge ipa/craft beer fan (and red wine when going out with my wife and no I don't have a problem)) but really enjoy a pour after dinner....I just treated myself with 2 new ones I had never tried 9Merry Christmas!), Ardbeg 10 ($55 gift pack here in Phoenix) and Angel's Envy ($36 during the once a year sale at Fry's Grocery Store). I agree with Elijah Craig and believe 1792, Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve and Larceny ($25 here in Phoenix) are excellent for the money. I hope everyone is able to enjoy the holidays with family and friends and a toast "To all of us hard working men and woman for a memorable Man Shit 2020!"

I had a bottle of 8 year Elijah Craig that I bought after a recommendation. I liked it. However, I took a small flask of it Pheasant hunting a year ago. It was cold out and we had been finding nothing due to the wind conditions. When I finished hunting, I sipped a draw off of the flask. I don't know if it had something to do with the exertion or the temperature but all of the harshness that it usually there was gone. It literally tasted a bit like orange marmalade. I thought I was going nutty so I had a couple of friends who are also into whiskey give it a shot and they noticed the same flavor profile. Much smoother, much sweeter. I loved it. When I got home and was rested I took a drink of it and it was back to its old self again. Don't know what the science is behind that but I liked it.

I generally do not like pairing my whiskies and cigars. But when I do I have had a hard time finding the best combination. I will say that the ardbeg 10 and Kentucky fire curred cigar is the perfect pairing. They compliment each other so well. The cigar smells like Peat but the taste is like a delicious barbecue sauce. It is also very smoky and again compliment a perfect pairing.

Speyburn 10 year, it's about 30 bucks in my area and it is absolutely amazing. Super buttery nose with a great sherry sweetness and a slight earthy taste. If you want a budget Islay scotch just to see if you even like the heavy peat and saltyness that comes from the region try McClellands Islay, not as good as laphroaig or ardbeg but it gives you a $20 sample of what to expect and if you think you could handle it go for the more expensive one.

I’ve been hell bent on bourbon for a number of years now and am just starting to open up to trying other types like Canadian whiskey and scotch. mtbostick67 good luck on your hunt. Today I picked up the Ardbeg 10... it is really good but for the seasoned taste. I’m glad I made the move

Rare Breed is magnificent, especially for the price.... One might even call it a 'rare breed'.... I'll show myself out.

Agreed. The Russell's Reserve 10 year (same distillery) is in the same price range here and excellent also.

Yer right-it’s true, We, in North of America love maple syrup! I put it in my coffee. Islay malts are my favourites (esp. Laphroaig Quarter Cask). As for paring w. maple syrup, I would go to Macallan 12yo @ $99.95 in Canada.

I never thought I’d see Ardbeg & Dalmore 12 in the same context. 🤔

Very different for sure. Love them both though 😉

Love the Islays! Definitely with the Kentucky Fired and English Pipe tobaccos, a very gentle choice is Bunnahabhain 12. Been enjoying Speysides like Arberlour A'bunagh small batch. Love Elijah Craig small batch, but out here it is aver $80.
