This list really shows the difference between what was popular at the time, and what's actually remembered. Some of these songs I've never heard, some I've heard maybe once or twice, and some are seared into my brain - and that applies to all decades.

I was really Surprised not to see Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin or The Doors within that top 5 from the 60's and 70's. Looks like Elvis was sweeping it every year up until The Beatles and The Stones came onto the scene and knocked him down a couple of knotches. With that, I'm going to say that Madonna takes it for the best multi decade artist, even up until now in 2024.

Wow! All these years I thought "I'm Not in Love" by 10cc was a Paul McCartney and Wings song. His voice is eerily like McCartney's. I loved the song "Winds of Change" by the Scorpians, but I never paid any attention to who it was by. One of the most hauntingly beautiful Rock songs ever. George Michael had an amazing voice. What a shame the only one of his songs that made it big was one of his worst. Listen to "Kissing a Fool" or "Father Figure" for a truly romantic, beautiful song. And of course, "Hand to Mouth" was phenomenal. Some really great music here.

Graham Gouldman was the founder/frontman for 10cc. He wrote quite a few hits in the mid-60’s. Between 1965 and 1967 alone, he wrote "For Your Love", "Heart Full of Soul" and "Evil Hearted You" for the Yardbirds, "Look Through Any Window" (with Charles Silverman) and "Bus Stop" for the Hollies, "Listen People", "No Milk Today" and "East West" for Herman's Hermits

I was blown away by the effect Elvis had, then the Beatles and Stones. Then along came ABBA, which had quite the run too! Madonna showed some incredible lasting power, as she remained up there from 84 to mid 2000's . Pretty impressive. Curious how you can see/hear music evolve/devolve (depending on your taste) Curiously, in the late 60's/early 70's no soul from like 4 Tops or Temptations, or the Supremes made the top 5, nor did Creedence Clearwater. Interesting. No early 60's Beach Boys? Good Vibrations was one of THE biggest hits EVER! Just curious stuff.

i know metal isn't everyone's deal but one by Metallica not being mentioned for 1988 genuinely surprised me

Metallica didn't hit mainstream popularity until the Black Album. Both And Justice for all and Master of Puppets probably sold more after 1991 than when they were first released.

@@petercena9497 they where at the gramys to perform one In 1988 They multiplyed in size several times after the black album yes But you have to be pretty popular to make it to the grammys and even if you are not you would see alot more attention your way afterword That being said I still side with your statement of metalica not being on everyone's lips until the black album

@@Thunderbolt3019 Metallica didn't really break to the big mainstream until 1991 with the Black Album. BUT, that album did prolly warrant something on the '91 list, either "Sandman" or "Nothing Else Matters." But again, rock made waves more with albums than singles; if it were top 10 albums, Metallica would've topped '91, with close challenges from "Use Your Illusion I&II", "Nevermind", and "Dangerous".
