Sparta a bad faction? Sure, the lack of unit variety is a bit boring, but A.I vs Pike Phalanx is broken as hell. You can take over Europe with nothing but pikemen and slingers.

Any faction that has pikes becomes easy to play in campaign. He said you simply cant win whith epirus in the early campaign when honestly all you have to do is have 8 pikes and ur city is unconquerable , and take advantage when ur enemies are distracted.

Epirus _is_ extremely difficult *unless* you take Athens immediately. Taking Athens sounds difficult, but all you need to do is: 1) use a spy on an Athenian supporting army to nullify its ability to reinforce, 2) then recruit as many mercenaries as you can afford, 3) attack Athens with a supporting army in reinforcement range* *you'll need to do the battle as an auto sim will have you losing. Once you've taken Athens, Sparta isn't too difficult, then take Rome (helps to ally factions north and south of Rome). After taking Rome, it is a pretty easy campaign :)

Epirus was easy for me. I became allies with the Illyrian tribes without even paying for the alliances. Sparta and Athens became allies and went to war with Macedon, so I became allies with Macedon. I took out Sparta, Macedon was taken out by tyllis, and then I took out Athens. Rhodos, Pergamon, and Knossos all became my client states.

ardaei navy is amazing. you can build OP ships in the first turns have extra raiding income. I just raid in the Adriatic sea any get stacks. it's fun

I agree, and maybe the campaign seems difficult, you can take on rome because you will find many allies against them. For multiplayer they are not the worst, let's not forget about the cheap axe units, they can deliver the AP damage you need, on the flank they will stay alive. Against sword the illyrian hoplites do better than greek ones. There are also thueros spears for skirmishing.

I have no problem with certain factions being weaker. You know what IS a huge problem though? Being charged $10 to play as a new faction only to find out it's dog shit. If you're gonna make me pay for faction DLCs, UPDATE THE FUCKIN ROSTER. That's what people are complaining about - don't let Creative Assembly hide behind this preconceived notion that "well Rome wiped them out in real life, so they should be bad in the game."

Cant agree with Pergamon being on this list. At turn 2 take Sardes. You now have -25% consturction cost, -10% from wonder and -10%+ from marble. From turn 3 you have half price for buildings. Open trade with egypt (as you are in war with seleucid anyway) and macedon + knossos. Dont ally with Rhodos as you want full province fast. Their Agema spears are a great holdout unit. As for units. Pike front. Theuros spears on your sides. Archers + artillery behind. Support with cav + peltast to flank. The +4 town growth is also very, very good early game. Pergamon has one of the best starting positions in the game netting you +20% industry, +4 growth, -50% building cost, easy trade partners, +10% trade income and more from turn 5-10 (I'm talking legendary difficulty here). Pergamon should not even remotely be on this list.

I think the video itself it's quite clueless, since mixes up campaign with unit roster. As I understand it a "worst factions list" It should only go for unit roster. Pergamon's roster is awful, impossible to make it competitive in MP. Their position is quite interesting for campaign though, as you pointed out. I think I'd subjugate some factions whose unit roster might complement Pergamon's. For instance, Galatia for swordsmen. Actually, I think this should be the way for every nation in campaign, both for fun and perfection. In my Macedon's campaign, I'm looking for an Oathsworn source at the moment. It would be awesome to see such awesome unit fighting for the Argead Star.

I'd have to disagree with Pergamon being a bad faction. If you know how to play them right you can do very well. They have cheap early sword and pike units that I have conquered such vast territories in early campaign that almost no other power except for maybe Rome and late game Parthia would have anything I couldnt take on. That includes the seleucids and egypt actually because if you know how to quickly counter their phalanxes with other units and leave them to fight your own you can take them down rather fast as well. You just need some tact but it is a very balanced faction. Not too strong in any areas but above average units in almost all and that's perfect for my play style.

Carthage is shite as well. They have a fucking terrible starting position in campaign with settlements spread across half the Mediterranean, they're famously a trading faction but get no resources (while Rome gets 2, as does your vassal Nova Carthago -_-) and worst of all you literally can't recruit anything other than 5 unit types until you get to tier 3 barracks. You're stuck with just 3 unit types with tier 1 barracks and need both types of tier 2 to get the other 2 units. Recruiting mercenaries can help, but your economic situation is completely fucked for the first 10-20 turns. Also, every one of your settlements have serious approval problems and non-faction religions, except for Carthage itself. Taking Syracuse is possible, but if Rome declares on you then they'll march their stacks in and your depleted units won't stand a chance, unless you get lucky and Rome declares late rather than early. Really, really, really hate what they did to Carthage in Rome 2.

Yup I reloaded many times but finally the Barcids crushed Rome,Spain,Gaul, Africa and Greece.Now waves of Carthaginian armies pouring in Crimea and in the Middle East.On of the most interesting and challenging campaigns.But you have a lot of variety in units and Elephants make the early game.Then you gotta rush to African pikemen which really turn the tide.

Not a Spartan fanboy or anything, but the Spartan campaign is extremely easy given that it only has to fight Epirus with very good hoplites. It also has imo a great position on the very edge of Greece, and makes it a very easy place to defend (if you aren't already conquering the entire Greece with excellent hoplites already). They also have the best pikes for their price, and Thorax swords or Legionaries can't even kill my Spartan hoplites. In Multiplayer they are not the best, but they are pretty good even against sword factions. I only truly have problems with horse archers, but I'm already getting used to it. So all in all, Sparta shouldn't be on this list. It's (imo) one of the easiest Greek factions to play as (certainly easier than Macedon and Egypt) in campaign, and in Multiplayer it actually fairs really well. Does lacking sword units basically make a faction crap in multiplayer when it already has excellent infantry (aside from the helots and perioikoi)? The only problem I have with Sparta is its lack of good cav units (which I was never good at anyway), but I think Tarantines are okay. Just my two cents on this. I don't know why you would put the nomadic factions as honorable mention. They are awesome to play and very fun too. The campaign start is messy and hard, but that is half the fun and when dealing with heavy infantry and siege battles you have to be flexible which makes you a better player. Besides the map speed of cavalry only armies is OP. The mix between dirt cheep archer cavalry to wipe enemy horse and range units, plus few heavy lancers to hammer and encircle the broken enemy lines is great, even though hard to use, and the elite archer cavalry has the benefits of both. Also the Royal cavalry of Scitia might just be the best heavy cavalry in the game.

I like Massagetae Saka Catahpract+Catahpract Archers to torn enemies army apart. Nomadic factions horse Archer is very OP, Royal Sythians have Noblewomen Horse Archers have well armoured and have longer rangers firing, Massagetae have Saka Catahpract. I their gameplay is relied on aggressive and offensive style fighting, one my favourite things about Nomadic faction like how you play Huns and Hephtalites in Total War Attila

Edward B-H I just played a Sparta campaign and finished it within 60 (or 70) turns using pretty much that strategy. Was able to get put some boats really quickly too meaning I was essentially able to slowly conquer the entire seaboard. Didn't even use the royal spartans because they just weren't neccassary with how good the philosophy tech tree is.

If you attack Athens, doesn't it low your "diplomatic honor"? Even though you have a port for trading, nobody would want to do so. I know it recovers as time goes by. I think Sparta might be even better at Campaign if some client states are used for recruiting cavalry and sword units. For instance, Macedon and Tylis.

As Royal Scythia, the only other factions I had trouble fighting were other nomadic horse lords. It would just come down to numbers. What I would do when conquering was take all of the villages first since my cav could walk right in. Then, I'd park my army and lay siege to the provincial walled city until they sallied forth or capitulated.. Anything I didn't plan to conquer I'd raid every so often for extra money. The Germanic and Celtic factions were the easiest to fight due to the low armor of their infantry.

alexww180 really? Sparta is a really easy campagin. Rome basicly are at war with literally everybody, go conquer greece, the turn westward. Take magna gracia first assuming rome has taken sicilly and cut them in half. Left one army for defense and use your navy with another army and conquer sicilly. With spartan hoplite and pikemen, its very easy.

When you say bad factions I think of bad unit rosters not bad starting position. Starting position only really matters if you're playing at the wrong difficulty level based on your skills. Even the hardest starts can be easily overcome by bad players if they play on normal/easy, it's when bad players try to play hard starts on very hard/legendary that they run into problems, and that's their fault for picking the wrong difficulty not the faction with a hard start being weak.

I disagree with Sparta being on there for a couple of reasons, first Spartas campaign is super easy and you are able to expand quickly, also in multi-player battles Sparta is one of if not the best defensive faction in the game, also dont can't complain about Spartas support units too much since their hoplites are already overpowered and at a good price for their quality, they can hold their own, their skirmishers are ok and citizen cav can keep enemy cav at bay til the Spartan hoplites break through, I'm not saying Sparta is by any means the best faction I just dont think it should be on this list, and this is coming from my experience

After beating the game as King of Epirus on legendary diffiuclty without any mods or smt, I saw there is no such thing "worst factions". Ever. There is only more challange. If a unit rooster lacks cav. or missile inf. or any side on the unit rooster, grow a solid economy and get the proper technology and use finest mercenaries, create satrapies, client states with more different cultures, not one or two, but 5 or 10, feed them, give them money, make them happy, grow your diplomatic cunning and force to join your cause. Get more variety of troops from them. See, that is a challenge and totally worth it.

ardiaei are hard to play , but they are not the worst faction ... pergamon is ... ardiaei has great noble hoplites ( you can field 5 or 6 in multiplayer battle : on standard 11 700 funds ) , they have great and cheap illyrian thureos spears (with cav counter tactics , precursor javellines and square formation for only 360) and they have axemen (those guys can do a ton of damage if you know how to use them : when they act as a support shock unit for noble hoplites thats a deadly combo) shure their cav is crap but i dont bring more then 2 units ... and im not sending them to fight enemy cav ... i save them for later to kill slingers or archers , or cheap skirmishers they struggle against better peltasts so i just use thureos or some other cheap unit to chase those of)

I disagree with Ardeiea being number 1 choice sure they have bad cav and melee but multiplayer wise Noble hoplites are one of the most cost effective hoplite units in game and win battles. They have celtic warriors which are the best low tier sword units in the game and they have Illryian marines and Illyrian thureos spears which are very decent peltast/spear hybreeds. So from a multiplayer perspective i dont think they are that bad but i would have to agree with their campaign beibg shit unless you use mods

When I first picked up Rome 2 Total War I also got all the faction packs and stuff. The first faction I played was the Ardei(?), the apparently worst faction on this list. But in this list you only take into account their land units. But their sea units are much more powerful in the beginning of the game, so much so I conquered two other settlements in the first five turns. By that time I had researched some good land unit techs, making my land units more powerful so then I could take the capital city of my province. It took two armies, almost completely stacked (20/20 and 17/20 I think) but we managed to take it. At that point in the game I just settled down so I could further improve both my army and fleet, so much so I was able to rival Rome but managed to secure a peace treaty and alliance shortly after (I nick named this playthrough the Ocean Romans)

I agree, the Ardiaei are tricky but good diplomacy with neighbour states like the greek ones and taking Apolonia from Epirus gives a good boost. However, I failed to resist Rome since they had completely taken over Carthage and the rest of enemies... Took too long for me to get a good economy

Pergamon for campaign is actually OP! That building bonus allows you to build your buildings fast as hell. Allowing you to get garrison and easily defendable settlements. This mixed with proper diplomacy with fellow Greeks allows a straight shot at Anatolia. Actually had my fastest campaign win with this faction maybe 50 turns.

Ardiaei aren't that bad. Combining their hoplites with their marines is a pretty good strategy. The hoplites nullify any charge your opponents have with their expert charge defense and hoplite wall. The enemies will usually outflank the hoplites, allowing the marines to loose their javelins and help the hoplites. They have some decently cost effective cavalry in the form of mercenary tarantines which can keep factions with more heavy cavalry busy.

i dont think it matters if a faction is shit... makes the game even harder and if you can play good tactics and still conquer the entire map... then you my friend are a true leader.... i get tired of being good factons, hence why i like playing with a weaker faction, the odds are stacked against you but if your not good enough then might aswell just stay with the strongest faction.... think of it like battlefield if your shit, then why you even playing the game but if your amazing and can do some insane shit you get called a hacker... none of the campaigns are impossible.. all about being smart and putting time and effort in, knowing how to overcome enemys and cities at a time whilst defending your lands from rebels its really simple

My list of worst: 1. Cappadocia (best roster in game) 2. Etruscan League (2nd best roster) 3. All 3 illyrian factions like ardiaei 4. Some desert factions like nasamoanes, they are not that hard but lack of units is anoying 5. Rome (too strong) thats why it is boring and played it only few times to complete historical rome (98% battles are autoresolve)

Very biased... Just because you cannot develop a playstyle for a faction doesn't make it a bad faction. Full cavalry armies can be amazingly versatile... An army that is 2/3 (or indeed full) mounted archers can easily beat an army two or three times its size if you micro your units. Also you seem to dislike using hoplite/phalanx focused armies, that doesn't make them bad objectively. Sparta is a bit too specialised, but Epirus and Pergamon are some of the more balanced and versatile Greek factions in that compared to most other Hellenics they have much more access to decent unit types outside of phallanx infantry. This more than makes up for weak starting position.

Spartans weren't the super soldiers legend painted them to be. In fact, history teaches us, that they were better politicians than they were soldiers. Spartans were an average army with decent military training, and while they had their own traditions, they didn't rise to prominence until after Thermopylae. After Thermopylae, they turned their Valiant Defeat around, and rewrote it as a victory, using political cunning to paint themselves as an all powerful force- requiring hundreds of thousands, just to take on 300, when it was terrain that saved them from being swamped in the battles opening. Eventually, due to them selling this idea that they were Super Soldiers, they increased their martial prowess and training, trying to come close to what we see in comics and movies. Basically, our idea of Spartans is extremely over-exaggerated by Myth, Legends, and History being written by the Victor. Before long, Spartans became Pariahs and Sparta became a place where rich and powerful Romans would visit, to vacation and watch 'Super Soldiers' train. Their downfall was their own legend. This isn't to say that Spartans did not have a rich culture, and weren't well trained in maintaining a Phalanx. They were just not that great. Especially when you compare them to the Roman Army

You cannot say a faction is bad just because of difficulty. Bad is a faction based mostly in roster and gameplay. Epirus for example souldnt be in the list. Yes, they are hard espesialy in the beggining. so what. that doesnt make them bad. its just a challenging faction to play. Did you know which Greek state is bad because of ganeplay and roster??? MASSALIA. Weak gallic force as well a poor roster of Greek hoplites and cavalry. I had them, i won with them, but it was a terrible expirience. Epirus just need a good strategy and nothing more.

Ardiaei are the worst because you guys don't know how to use them. They are situated in great region and can form Illyrian Confederacy. They are close to Iron deposits which gives you better armor. You get 200% increase in looting trade routes with your ships. One thing I do agree is a shitty unit roaster. CA really fucked us by overlooking Illyrian factions. This is great injustice because Illyrians were ferocious warriors. Along with Thracians they were nightmare of Balkans. Their women were trained in warfare. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audata

i'm in total disagreement with sparta,epirus & the honourable mentions all of them are awesome and I find sparta very almost OP in multiplayer being able to destroy roman units. Not only that there campaign is easy. Epirus campaign i found okay once you kill sparta & athens armys its an easy win from there but then again that depends how good you are in the battle map. The cav factions have to be my biggest disagreement here. With a full scythian stack I have killed 5000 units with archers (this was in a head to head and the guy RQ, he was athens) Scythia is v.op with its recruitment slots early on - don't attack cities just wait them out and you can expand v.quickly early due to this recruitment slot bonus over everyone else, you choose the fights, and you can have fights where you dont get hit as you have HA armys requires good micromanagement but hey i find them awesome.

Replace Epirus with Carthage. Strong in the late game, but that assumes you survive the early game. Your early unit roster is garbage and your light infantry will struggle, even against the barbarian factions that should be a pushover, forcing you to rely on mercenary armies, which are expensive and unreliable. Early conquest in the Iberian peninsula is almost impossible due to this fact. Your economy starts off fairly poor which means you can't afford the buy the large armies you will need to make even modest gains. Most of your empire is made up of vassal states that you have to keep happy or else they may revolt, and you have an expansionist Rome on your doorstep who you will struggle to stop if they land in North Africa, even with their most basic infantry. Your expansion options are also quite limited, with Egypt to your west which is much stronger than you in terms of unit roster, and conquest in Spain impossible due to unit costs and the sheer crappiness of your early game standard units.

Dude. You`re doing it wrong. If you play Rome II without mods, it`s just like eating Pizza without topping. You can do it, but u really have no reason to. Just 1 good mod is all you need. Take for instance divide et impera, or my personal favourite, the Radious total war mod.

Sorry bro but sparta and epirus are one of the best in campaign .. pretty good hoplites, starting position isnt too bad also if u are not a newbie, you can rush whole greece in 10 turns (pretty easily) then go for Rome, when they are still weak .. its rlly one side war vs Rome - Tbh Bactria or something like that is pretty annoying if u are vs horse archers with weak hoplites.. u just need to spam slingers, but also still easy playable.. Whole Rome 2 is one of the easiest game with that autoresult when u see if u are lossing or not

Not proud of this but completely conquered the map playing as the Odrysians. There was no reward just pain, raiding, endless revolts, and no real unit improvement at all. 😂 Did have multiple full stack armies survive whole game tho. Never lost a battle.

Dacia in the Imperator Augustus campaign is a bitch of a campaign though. I've made probably 6 attempts now and am only now on an okay attempt. Up to turn 40 to 50, just unlocked the heavy spears and can actually compete in the battlefield.

Epirus the hardest campaign???They have a little complicated start,but I killed off sparta and athens in few turns on legendary,the hardest campaign in my personal experience is Getae and i finished the campaign on legendary,i have also finished the campaign on legendary as the ardiei and it was not as hard as the getae.I still have to play odrysian kingdom. Scythia campaign, hard? What are you talking about? They have the very, very best cav in the game. In field battles I can take on stacks upon stacks, in sieges I use my elite horse archers to murder all the wall defenders and send waves of cheap mercenaries after them to get the gates unlocked for my horde.

Ardie have good ships, it's pirate faction. and with fleet he is rather good. Spartans - best hoplites in a game. Pergamom easy to play faction. tila - worst position, have war with macedonians, weak start units. It's all about game in legendary.

Why is Sparta a Bad Faction, Huh? Sparta doesnt need a lot of archery or horses because therye men was trained at the age of 7. no real spartan archers only helots, no real spartan cavalry men, Only Hoplites are they in Sparta All Sparta's men except the helots are hoplites or heavily trained men
