South Carolina is a good one. No inspections, no Classic registrations, and no emissions laws. I drive straight-piped old 70’s Mercedes Diesels on waste veggie oil with no emissions filters on them

Since I live there, I have to tell you that we still rate a #1. Our governor HATES cars. And he HATES oil even more. The state is totally run by the left wing. Here in my city, we have lost lanes on busy streets to accommodate bicycles, who obviously pay no road taxes. They heavily promote electric cars, while the infrastructure is still not there and may never be. His ideal is mass transit for all; meanwhile on the news, ridership is down (and always has been)and passengers are being shot. We have spent billions on a still incomplete high speed rail that will never be completed (at least not in my lifetime). California used to be the hub of hotrodding - no more - smog standards are tougher than anywhere else and smog inspections come every 2 years. We used to grandfather cars out of smog inspections once they were 25 years old. Not any more - anything 1976 or newer still has to be smogged. My 75 Firebird 455 just snuck in under the wire - tire smoke to you, governor! The Feds even now use CA standards for new cars - sorry about that...not my idea. I could go on, but this state is hopeless. Like I tell people, I'm just here for the weather.

As a former resident of Illinois, I can confirm that the car scene is near non-existent. I took my car halfway across the country for a visit once. It's kinda sad when a 1.6T is the loudest thing on the road

3:00 Engine swaps are legal here, they just have to be in the same "class" of vehicle (ie no truck motor in a passenger car), the engine has to be the same age or newer than the car, and it has to pass smog as if it was on the original car still.

New jersey ain’t too too bad. Up state, they got some really nice car clubs with some of the most exotic and fine sports car oddly enough. Nice driving roads too. Only issue is the New Yorkers

Keep in mind, where you live, doesn't matter, you still are gonna find some pros and cons about living in different places as a car guy but some places are really dogsh*t to own and build an older car compared to others or if you even are able to find parts and the car you want

My son here in CA is facing the problem of getting an engine swap legal, which should really not be possible. He (with great fortitude, a ton of work, and many $) has swapped a 4.3 Lexus v8 from a wrecked GS430 into his 00 Tacoma. It's a rocket and an off-road beast, but he wants to daily it - good luck to him...

Wisconsin is arguably the most car friendly of the Northern States. Winter does suck and they do indeed dump salt and brine on the roads. But spring through fall there are alot of fun twisty roads to cruise on and alot of beautiful sights for car enthusiasts to cruise to and see.

Yeah. Im in NY (near the city but other side) and its getting bad. We have some nice car shows and all, but roads are crap, gas is pricey and well...elections mean nothing. The scene? It's like anywhere, if you get in with the right crowd its a lot of fun, otherwise its a lot of cancer and toxicity. I've been to meets where 10 people got arrested cuz they were doing handbrake turns for no reason in their Velosters. WA itself is actually probably one of the better states for being a car guy tho
