Your calculations must be wrong since the result: - does not align with my personal and highly sophisticated taste in music. - does not confirm my over inflated national pride. - does not take into account... the orbital angle of Saturn or sumthing. Just kidding. :) Great work. I've been searching for such a list. Two thumbs up.

I agree, the method is a good way of determining the "best" Eurovision song, however it's flawed in my opinion. While I think this method is a very good way of determining just how successful a song was, there is a problem that lies in #1 on this list - Tu Te Reconnaitrais by Anne-Marie David scored 129 out of a possible 160 points. However, prior to 1975, the scoring system was different. The country that came in 1st by voters was given 10 points, then 2nd was given 9, then 3rd was given 8. Because of this, there were several instances where Luxembourg's entry came second in voting, but only missed out on 1 point, rather than 2. Because of this, it was able to accumulate more 'available' points. If 1973 had incorporated the 12-10-8 system of scoring, then Tu Te Reconnaitras would have scored 138 out of a possible 192 points, which equates to 71.86%, which would've put it at 16th on this list. That being said, the UK's 1976 entry of Save Your Kisses For Me was subject to the 12-10-8 scoring, so in my opinion, this would be a more accurate number one.

To me the percentage of votes doesn't mean a thing, since it can be high not because the song was actually so amazing, but because it was the only good song in that year's competition and was an obvious winner as a result.

This is a very good point actually. Let's say there were 2 FANTASTIC songs fighting for the top spot, and they got near-equal points, then that would mean they'd both get a lower % of potential points than what they would get in a contest with no competition, and so that's another flaw with this method. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

There is a mistake concerning Italy 1964 at 4:44. Like in 1965 and 1966, each jury could award all its 9 points to one country. With 15 other countries taking part, the maximum available was 135 points, not 75. Italy scored 36,2963 % of the potential maximum.

@adrianantonio98997 жыл бұрын
Daniel Willforss It is not 60% of the total vote but 60% of the votes they can get. So let us say that you can get 100 points. If you get 60 points that would be 60%. Kind of complex but once you realize that it is a bit more simple.

I dont get it, should not every country be able to get the same amount of points? So how can a song be second or third place with over 60% of "100" points?
@adrianantonio98997 жыл бұрын
All the countries participating have a chance to get 100% of the vote. Again going back to my example if the total possible score a country can get is a 100, the song can get 100% of the vote by getting all the points. Another song could get 90% of the total points possible by getting 90 points.

Wouldn't be the modern flag pointless here? The meaning is that the artists represented Spain under this exact flag when the modern one wasn't officially in use. Some countries which participated in the Eurovision don't even exist anymore and of course their old flags are in use for them. For example, there is Serbia and Montenegro as one country in the video. If there was Yugoslavia, I would have chosen its flag. This principle is used in WIkipedia. Same goes for the Olympics, by the way. I know what this flag means but still.

Thanks for making this list, ice really enjoyed it! I have some thoughts, how to raise the comparability between different voting systems and different counts of participants in the final. In statistics, there is the Central Limit Theorem. It delivers a statement, what the chances are to excess a certain score just by random. According to this, the following might be a more sophisticated score to measure the dominance of an entry: Score = (points - expected pts.) / deviationI think I'm going to build a easy-to-handle excel tool, just give me a hint, if you're interested in it.

@AlexESC8 жыл бұрын
Even if a country doesn't go through to the grand final, it still votes. So it's not 25 countries but 41.
@TumbleTower8 жыл бұрын
Since 2004, countries which were eliminated in the semi-finals still voted in the grand final. Thus there were 42 countries voting in the ESC Grand Final 2016, including the 16 semi-finalists which failed to qualify. In 2016, winners Ukraine could have received 12 jury points from each of the other 41 countries, i.e. 492, plus 12 televoting points from each of the other 41 countries, i.e. 492. Thus the maximum achievable score was 984 points in 2016. Ukraine's grand final score of 534 points (jury and televoting combined) was just 54.27% of the maximum possible score (984 points), which is quite low really. Mind you, under the system introduced in 2016, is it realistic for a country to receive 12 jury points from every other country, and 12 televote points from every other country? Time will tell if the 2016 system is used in future years.

I don't wanna ruin the fun cause I really do like this method, but shouldn't the max points be higher for the more recent entries? If each country has 58 points to give out (1-8, 10, 12), the max amount of points available would be much higher: for example, Vienna 2015 would have 2,320 points available (40 countries X 58 points).
@AlexESC8 жыл бұрын
You are talking about different method now, which I've tried but there were dozens pre-1970 songs and very few recent ones. Your method implicates total amount of points given to all countries during a contest. The method shown in the video uses the maximum score which one country could be awarded, and for 1975-2015 contests it would be 12 points x ( number of countries - 1 ) (because a country can't vote for itself, and it can't receive both 10 and 12 points from some another country, 12 is max). For example, if all 39 countries (excluding Sweden) gave their 12 points to Måns in 2015, then he would have been given 468 points in total (12 points x 39 countries).
@cornstars6 жыл бұрын
nice, but difficult due to the different way of assigning points in 1967-1970 and in 1974. That's why Abba isn't in this list...
@JSchultze948 жыл бұрын
I really like this concept, but you should imo exclude pre 74 and 2016 as those were used with other methods. In a precentage top like this the pre 74 method makes it easier to get a higher score and the latter one makes it harder . It is of course impossible to make a fair precentage based top as there are more countries now competing in the competition then before, but a good try nevertheless! :)
@AlexESC8 жыл бұрын
I just really wanted to include every single year. Maybe I'll make a video without 1956-1974 tho. But I think, essentially 2016 is equal to previous years since scores doubled and that's it, and so percentage is the same. Of course there is different method of counting but there were experiments with counting system before, in 2013, for instance. Thank you for watching anyway! UPD. Yeah, I got you now. It's much more difficult now to get to the top because you have to prevail among both juries and televoters.
@JSchultze948 жыл бұрын
Yeah was just about to show you that ;) Sweden would have gotten only 67,5 % in 2015 if the new system would have been used, instead of 78 % which it got in the old. The favorites get less precentage in the new system and the ''losers'' get more, and that makes the new voting a little bit more fair imo. It is truly a 50/50 system now. Of course the voting is far from perfect, but for now it is heading towards a more fairer direction.

Every country can give of course 12, 10 and 8-1 points. If you get all 12 points you have a 100% score but if you get all 10 points you have 83,33%. So the reason is the vote system. No idea if I explained it good enough with my English :P
@Ornochestror8 жыл бұрын
Simply because this video shows how many points an entry got all of the points it could have got. A country gets the maximum amount of points, when it receives 12 points from every country. But don't forget that they also give 1-8 and 10 points, so the winner is only able to receive 12 of 58 points of all points one country can award, so a song can only receive 20,7 percent of ALL points. I hope this explanation isn't too bad ^^'

100% is if every country gave them maximum points. But every country gives points to multiple acts. So it's possible for second place (and even lower ranks) to have more that 50%. It just means that all the big points were concentrated on a few acts, and likely a number of acts got zero points total.

It's a good idea to make percentage-list, but it is still not completely fair. Because it's easier to get a higher percentage with less contestants.

If a voting system is the same then not really. Every new country brings another set of points. And so, right now it's a constant number of 116 (includes both juries' and televoters' points).

The thing I don't understand is : Why People for exemple from Norway (who speaks norwegian, live in Norway) SING IN F*CKING ENGLISH? They are from a country, representy that country wy the hell are they singing in another language? It's like if an Italian representing Italy sings in Swedish...the fuck? They should not let compet countries not singing in their mother language it's insane

My name is Someone Exactly, for example Sweden knows its shit, remember Abba? In the 1974 edition they didn't apply the language rule and that's the reason they won, like boi why wouldn't you want to sing in your own language? Maybe they are ashamed of their own language... Nowdays is more like Anglovision.

If you were to point out the mistakes, it would be more helpful.

no on that way, i thougt this isnt right way to count, better way is to gather points of all states in the final and found that occupies a certain percentage of the state, I think that this way of calculation most accurate :)

Mihajlo Djordjević I thought about it but it just doesn't work. It wouldn't change the order of songs from 1975 and newer but these songs would be underrepresented, with the highest song since 1975 (Ding-a-Dong) on the 18th place and the highest 2000s song (Fairytale) on the 60th place. So, there would be a lot of songs on top from before 1975 which didn't even do great. The trick is in voting systems. The most popular pre-1975 one was that 10 jurors distribute 10 points. And so, all 10 points from some country can go to one specific song, while the current system doesn't allow award one country with all your 58 points (that is 12+10+8+...+1 combined).

By the way, you can't say wrong just because it's different. Every counting method has a right to exist :)
