This takes me back. Robocop 2 was absolutely NAILS.

It might be awash with colour clash and slowdown, but I still find myself returning to this version of Rainbow Islands. It's a helluva port. The C64 version just controls all wrong when you're used to the arcade original, it's so weird.

Whoa, Shadow of the beast was on the speccy? Looked pretty damned good as well!
@MusicalPenguin1272 жыл бұрын
IMO Shadow Of The Beast played better on the ZX than it did on the 16 bit formats. The Amiga original got a lot of criticism for relying on great graphics to mask shallow gameplay at the time. The ZX port came well over a year later and playing it at the time felt like the gameplay had been tweaked to suit the platform. They did a good job of adapting some of the 16 bit visuals to the ZX's limitations though, such as the parallax scrolling elements.

Thank for this first decade from ZX Spectrum :) ( but... why less than 9 minutes for 50 games ? It' is so short ; and around 40 years ago, so long O.o ! ;D )

I decided to make these top 50 videos less than 10 minutes so anyone can check out how the gaming looked like back then without spending too much of their time on videos ;)

I had moved onto an Atari 1040 STFM by 1990. So never played any of these video games on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum. I had Bloodwych on the Atari ST but the Sinclair ZX Spectrum version actually looks quite good on that machine.

Most of these are new to me as I was into the Amiga by this point, so i either never saw the original IPs or wasn't aware of the ports that existed for the Speccy this late in its life. A real shock to me was Turrican, I had no idea they attempted that on the speccy and looking at it I do wonder why they bothered.

Oh it was fine. It chugged a little but the core gameplay was great and the sprites were bold and colourful. Yeah, I had a lot of fun with it back in the day.

Waiting for 1991 and 1992!

Had some health issues so it was hard to work on this (this channel is only a hobby for me). But, 1991 should be done during this week - I'm not sure 1992 is worth making for ZX Spectrum - will do a bit more research before deciding. Thanks for watching!

Most of these games are making completely unreasonable demands of the Spectrum - and end up looking like a shoddy mess. The Spectrum's golden age was the early-to-mid eighties when programmers designed games specifically for it. The games above are trying to ape the 16-bit computers - and failing badly. Rainbow Islands is impressive, however.
@314159265mangler Жыл бұрын
You nailed it. ‘90 is when you see the beloved speccy really struggle to handle the large sprites that were the order of the day. Also, possibly, there was just increasing emphasis on optimising for 16 bit platforms, with the spectrum increasingly an afterthought as the platform sharply declined in relevance. Funnily enough just a year before I think there were significantly more quality games for the spectrum - a gaming year I enjoyed immensely. But maybe it is the fact that that was the last year I played spectrum games before moving on to my Atari ST in 1990… ;-)

Some real stinkers there. Not too many classics. Going by this channel's video, the best year seems to have been 1986. It was all downhill from there onwards.
@retrononame8 ай бұрын
For me, best years probably 85/86, but there are good games to be found in later years as well (but also many rushed releases).

Binged watched these videos and my main thought is how primitive these games are. The sound is annoying and the colour clash is there for all to see. Compare these to NES and Master System games which looked more advanced.
