My cat eats wet food and dry but more wet but he is a very sloppy eater he only likes pate and he licks at it instead of biting it he gets it all over I have tried so many dishes I have gone to the thrift store and bought several different kinds of bowls and plates and he can't eat anything that's too deep and if it's too flat he gets it all over the place so I'm still hunting for the perfect Bowl for something to elevate his dishes because it's hard for me to get down to give it to him I have severe scoliosis if you have any suggestions of about what to raise his dishes off the floor would be appreciated

I use stainless bowls currently but have been looking for a raised, tilted bowl for my girl who's prone to throwing up. She's healthy, just jacked up from doing the snarf n barf so often a couple years ago. We've since changed up feeding schedule so the day's portions are split throughout the day instead of 2 larger portions, and also use a combination of regular bowls, slow feeding bowls, and a puzzle tray. These have helped significantly, but it still occurs and I've heard raised bowls can help with that. The mouse feeders look like something my younger would love! She is a hunter 100%

We feed wet food on a regular salad plate. Dry food is fed in elevated and tilted ceramic cat bowls (two bowls in that sit in a wooden top with metal "legs"). One cat eats directly from the ceramic bowl, the other cat reaches in and scoops the food out onto the floor before she eats it.
@violetviolet888

"the other cat reaches in and scoops the food out onto the floor before she eats it" This can mean the bowl is too high for that cat's preference and/or the sides of the bowl are too high and hurt that cat's whiskers. Try the 1st bowl recommendation Dr. Catsby's Whisker Relief bowl for your cat that reaches for food. Your cat's behavior is trying to tell you something.

I leave some dry food out on a glass plate, but Velvet's main diet is wet food which I put on a porcelain china plate that I hold while she eats. Yes, I hold it for her 3 times a day. LOL For humans, including myself, I only use paper plates and bowls. When my kids came for Thanksgiving one year, my son from another country, they didn't fail to notice and comment on this. I elevate them by turning a small bowl upside down on a mat and placing the bamboo bowl on top. Sometimes a few pieces of dry food will fall onto the mat, but my cats will eat them up too. Despite the fact we have 14 cat dishes of different sorts, my wife and I both had cats when we got together, I use 8” stainless steel platters. They are shallow, I perfect size for a portion of food feeding them 3 times daily and stainless steel. We have a great mat for holding the dishes which my wife bought online. My cats swap over half way through eating as though they think the other one is getting something better. They are brothers and have always eaten together every day of their lives. They both seem very happy doing this and they always weigh within a few grams of each other so one isn’t getting all the food.

I use 2 kitten sized stainless steel bowls inside a mould. Made in the USA and I do believe I spent close to 20.00. My cat Vita has HUGE whiskers. Very shallow bowls and the silicone moulds keep the bowls in place. Very little spillage and the silicone mould is easy to clean. Also, the size of the bowls prevent her from overeating kibble. She still gets some along with wet food and Churu treats

When we first got our kitty I tried the stainless, small lipped bowl (like the 2nd one in the video) however she was a year old and fairly petite and just didn't seem to like her whiskers hitting the edge. So I switched to a small ceramic that just had curved up sides. Now that she is comfortable in our home she will eat out of the stainless bowl, so my guess is coming to a new home she was stressed and the extra sensation on her whiskers was just too much for her. Thank you for your videos!

Its wild that vets don't think whisker fatigue is a thing!! I'm a fairly new cat owner, I've had my cat for almost a year. He was 8 weeks when we got him and his first set of bowls were metal (which I didn't know was ideal) but his food and water was right next to each other and the bowls were kinda deep. Even as a kitten, I noticed he wanted to eat more but started to become resistant to eating if he had less food in his bowl. He would look in his bowl and sniff but he couldn't eat when he was running low. Since he was going go the vet fairly often for typical kitten appointments, I knew he was healthy so I looked online and learned about whisker fatigue. I got some new bowls for whisker fatigue, and he started finishing his food again! Another important change I made within the last 5 months, I have started putting his water across the room from his food so he drinks more frequently (cats dont like their water source near their food). Soon I will be getting him some bigger bowls and a fountain to suit his needs as an adult.

I think you should mention an additional con the hunting/play toys. The cat ends up eating the food off the floor, which depending on the at can cause a huge mess and be kinda gross. My cat is a slobber monster when it comes to food, and struggles to actually get food in his mouth so he leaves a pile of spit everywhere he eats. So that is just straight not an option for me. I actually use the second bowl you mentioned and love it. My cat has some issues getting food out of the edges of the bowl though (he had some mouth trauma pre-rescue, so he is just... special.) I have 8 of them (use 2 a day) and just throw them in the dish washer after daily use. So they get washed with my dishes on the regular, easy to keep things hygienic for the slobber cat.

While your point it taken, it is a given there will always be exceptions no matter what. You admitted your cat had mouth trauma, therefore your cat does not represent normal cats. It is up to you to decide what will work best for your cat. You can always leave treats or bits of food in random spaces without the toy to still encourage your cat to hunt. Or change the location of your feeding bowl every meal time so your cat has to find it.

@@violetviolet888 It's just an obvious con that should be listed in a review video like this IMO. All about cats does a great job of listing all the cons and pros for all buyers, this one was just missed! It should be in the consideration when purchasing hunting/play food toys like that. I purchased some play feeders when I had different foster cats as well and ultimately decided against them because of the mess. It's really not so obvious if you aren't prepared for it. I'd love to see some play toy containment system options tho!

For that residue sticky stuff, don’t bother with Goo Gone. The easiest thing is plain old odorless mineral spirits. I use it on everything and I mean everything, even great for cleaning dirty wood. I saturate a cotton ball and place it on the sticky object I want to remove. Let it sit for a bit, and then peel off the sticky stuff. Obviously on a large sticky area, use a piece of paper towel. What about raised or slanted feeders? Do they live up to their claims? I feed wet food on the butter plates that came with my dishes set.It's flat so there is no whisker issue and I have a place mat for her as I know she's a messy eater. I use am elevated porcelain bowl for dry food (which was originally bought for wet food but she wasn't having it) and a ceramic bowl for water. I also bought a large, porcelain water bowl but she won't use it for some reason (maybe because it has markings on the side and a cat face at the bottom? The ceramic water bowl also has cats at the bottom but they are colorful and not just black on a white background. Does that make a difference?) I got the elevated bowls because she's 13 and they said it was easier but she likes the flat plate better.
@AllAboutCatsYT
@AllAboutCatsYT 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Helene, that's a good question. I've not been able to see anything definitive on elevated or tilted bowls; anecdotally, people will say that they helped to resolve GI issues or that their cats seem to be happier eating from them (purportedly due to joint relief), but we currently don't have any good evidence that this is true. I think it comes down to personal preference, really, so if your kitty prefers eating off of a flat plate, that will work.
@violetviolet888
@violetviolet888 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the design of the other bowls (that are not slanted). If the sides are too high, the cat potentially has to lean their head over more and then down to get to the food. Which could be uncomfortable. Tilted bows that are wide can absolutely be easier for animals to use. The older a cat gets, it helps to have more ergonomic considerations. As humans get older, it is harder to bend for many reasons. For instance a raised garden bed is easier to tend to for a human. Same with eating out of an elevated bowl for an older cat.

All you need to get rid of sticker goo is cooking oil and a cotton pad, sponge, cloth etc. let the oil soak in a bit (15-30 seconds) and just scrub. I have never met sticker goo that I could't get rid of using this method. Please don't use Goo Gone on your pet bowls as it's toxic, and if you already have, just wash the bowl/plate several times really well with dish soap (preferably Dawn dish soap) Hope this helps someone. 👍❤😺🐾

Did you check intellikatt? It's my favorite puzzle bowl because it's adaptable difficulty. My cats have currently mastered max society though, so I've added magnets to a metal plate underneath (so the bowls don't wander or tip) and am considering adding obstacles (lacrosse balls, though they might be too big).

I have no idea what kind of a bowl to get my cat. She's super messy. If there is liquid she will shove anything solid out of her bowl to lap at the liquid. She will NOT eat anything that touches the ground unless I put it back into her bowl for her highness (ugh). However she seems to not like high sided bowls because of her whiskers I assume. So I'm not sure what would be best for a messy eater like my kid? On one hand, whisker stress but on the other I don't want her food to end up outside her dish.

To be fair, if a cat is conditioned to move their whiskers when eating, they're going to do it a few times in a row until they understand that the bowl is not going to hurt them. I'd like to see this with the cat eating out of the same bowl for two weeks to see if the whisker behavior is the same or if it changes.

I bought two smallish, hard plastic, oval-shaped elevated bowls from China. They were very cheap and my chaps like them very much. I did this since I read that elevated cat bowls are better for cats. However, I am still sceptical about that along with "whisker-fatigue". My cats all too frequently catch and despatch small rodents and birds in the garden. I've never seen them take their kill to an elevated surface to scoff, nor do they complain about whisker fatigue after spending hours snootling around in the undergrowth after a shrew. So, I think that's all hogwash really, though other cats may have those problems.
@violetviolet888
@violetviolet888 3 жыл бұрын
Whisker sensitivity is a real issue. Their whiskers go deep into their skin and are built to be sensitive to protect them and inform them of environmental factors that us humans are not sensitive to. You've had a thorn stuck in your skin at some point in your life have you not? And the slightest pressure or movement can make it painful? Imagine many of them on your face and in your legs. Intentionally going through nature is different than taking the time to sit down and eat. It's is not to be dismissed. Every cat is different and every cat changes as they get older. Just as humans do.
@AllAboutCatsYT
@AllAboutCatsYT 3 жыл бұрын
Moggridge, I'd lean towards agreeing with you. Cats don't seem to feel discomfort when their whiskers touch other surfaces-they don't seem to bother them when they press against a blanket during a nap or, like you said, while snootling (love it!) around for a shrew. Most of the purported symptoms of whisker fatigue are subjective to the human observer as well, which makes it difficult to measure the difference. While it is true that whiskers are extremely sensitive to a degree we can't fully understand, I don't think it's accurate to liken them to thorns stuck in the skin. Overall, yes, it COULD cause overstimulation but, for most cats, it's probably not uncomfortable. Worth considering for some cats but probably not a must.

@@AllAboutCatsYT It's challenging to come up with a metaphor that humans can relate to since humans don't have whiskers. As you know, whiskers are much deeper than our hair or fur. Imagine using your fingers to do a task. It's fine when you have control over it because the sensitivity of your fingers can tell your brain it's safe and you can diversity the movements and sensitivity so you are not hurting your fingers. (Just as animals moving in the world rely on their whiskers to inform them of their environment so they can adjust their movements). Now put yourself in a situation where perhaps you are using a tool and you can only use it one way and it takes a lot of repetitive motion. Your fingers get tired, sore, or even worse develop blisters in a short amount of time but you have no other way of completing that task. Now imagine you have to experience painful motion just to survive because you have to eat as animals are forced to do with whiskers in bowls that are not whisker friendly. Anyone who doesn't understand this has not cared for cats with sensitive whiskers. If you ever do suspect whisker sensitivity, put two bowls side by side. One with sides, one that is whisker friendly. The cat will tell you which is far more comfortable to use.

@@violetviolet888 Good point! That would be a good experiment for a future video. Unfortunately, I didn't put these bowls side by side to see which my cats preferred, but it would be fascinating to see if they showed a preference based on whisker contact. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

@lauraforero3418
@lauraforero3418 3 жыл бұрын
Chris, it can take a while to transition a cat to wet food. The dry food is sprayed with animal digest and is like kids and candy. The cat will hold out as long as it is in the house because it can smell it. Cats’ sense of smell is 10x that of humans. Put the dry food in the fridge or store it somewhere they can’t smell it. You could try pushing some kibble into the wet food and as a topper, and gradually reduce the kibble. It’s more of a “texture” issue, not taste. Also, try warming up the wet food, to “mouse” temp before serving. Take up all food overnight and use hunger to encourage the cat to eat in the morning! (As long as the cat doesn’t have any health issues, like diabetes, etc. ) you are doing the best thing for your cat switching it to a more species appropriately diet and will really prevent potentially serious problems in the cat’s future!!!! Sorry to go off- Good luck!!!

Not necessarily! I've not been able to find anything definitive on the subject. Some say that their cats seem happier eating from them, but we don't have any solid data on this. If you're curious, you can experiment by placing your cat's regular bowl on a small box or book to see if they seem more comfortable that way.

I wish I had the money to buy the microchip feeder, but I would need at least two: one for the very expensive and limited ingredients food I feed my sick senior cat, that suffers from IDB and final stage leukemia. The other one would be for my other three cats, so they could eat whatever they wanted. That way I would not worry about my healthy cats eating the special food, nor would I be depriving them from enjoying beef, chicken or any other food that is bad for my sick cat. But that would mean about $360 plus shipping, handling and 28% import tax I would have to pay for them in my country. That adds up to about $600 for the two feeders, if there are no other expenses.

Timed feeders are a waste of money! They can ultimately cause other behavioral issues!! Now, promoting hunting when feeding seriously? Maybe for young cats!! The major issue here should be promoting the cats HEALTH!!! Common sense will tell & show you that raised feeding dishes is the best option for all cats (dogs too). Obviously for very small kittens they don't need a a much height as an adult (also depending on the height of the cat. Now my comments come from over 50yrs of a CAT household & for the most part a MULTIPLE CAT HOME (& NOT a house but a FOREVER HOME)!!!!!! It's useful that these videos are brought to everyone's attention but you still have to use common sense & consider everything about your cat, as you know there are no 2 cats alike! Their Personalities cannot ever be compared to another!! We Love our 💞 FurBabies & their time with us is far too short so we want them to have the best😻 life possible!!
