@jesscaticles Do you have a link for Raised Right?There isn't one in the description. In case you answer this, could you include the name/link to the supplement or supplements you add to your homemade recipes? Is it non synthetic? Would it be safe to add a small amount to normal foods that already have supplements in them? Just want to get them some added good nutrients. Was going to order Smalls. Do you know why it's not on Susan's list now? Also very sad to hear Vivas had so many recalls and read comments about people's animals who did okay now getting ill. How are your moms cats doing on it? How do you know if/ when it gets safe again? Thank you SO MUCH for all the information you provide!

Nothing can be more important than health. My boy is 100% raw fed and it cost me $250 on his food monthly excluding supplements, treats etc. But he’s getting human grade, grass fed grass finished meats(does not use trim). His premade is made in a HACCP certified facility as well. All his treats are grass fed/finished single ingredients as well. He’s a rescue and deserves only the best. I do believe that as an owner you should be able to provide the best to your pets❤❤❤

I feel like giving them a decent quality cat food, playing with them, loving them, taking them to vet on a yearly basis and keeping their litter box clean is more than enough. You gotta remember that there are more cats in shelters than people have at home, so even giving one a loving home is already a good thing.

I’m trying to do better for my cats’ diet, but since recently taking in a third cat (9mo stray kitten), the wet food cost is REALLY racking up! However, comparing the price per ounce of a high quality wet food (tiki cat after dark) to viva raw… the price is the same??!! That’s crazy! Why am I wasting my money on canned food when I could be buying raw? Now, I’m still researching so I could be missing an important factor (like maybe they’ll need to eat higher quantity of the raw food compared to wet?) but this is still a crazy realization.

Where did you find this information?
@janislevy1ify6 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! Another great informative video! ❤ And discounts! ❤ I didn't realize that Just Food for Cats is on Susan Thixton's list even though I've referred to her list often. But I think I looked at the ingredients at one time. I'll take another look. Hare Today doesn't have complete wet meals, but they have whole prey! My younger kittie Scamper was feral as a kitten and she loves raw! She would love the raw prey options! As for Steve's, Steve Brown is very knowlegeable and is passionate about feeding healthy, safe food to pets. I was also impressed by the customer rep I spoke with. I inquired about phosphorus percentages because my other cat Cookie will be 11 this year, almost a senior. She doesn't have any diseases (nor does Scamper), but I'm a preventative cat mom. Older cats are more prone to urinary tract diseases, infections, chronic (CKD). Big factor is cats not getting enough hydration from food. Another factor is too much phosphorus contributes to urinary tract issues. Also Calcium:Phosphorus ratio needs to be at least 1:1. I looked at Quest for cats. The only one with a phosphorus level that would be fine for my senior is the pork and I'm a little uncomfortable with the pork, although still considering it as one of their foods. I rotate their foods. However, the cost is higher and I'm already financially stretched. So I purchased one bag of the Freeze Dried Raw for Cats and Dogs. One 20 oz bag makes 5 pounds of food! Because for every ounce, you add 3 oz of water to make the food. This varies a little from brand to brand, but generally most. A lot of people don't know this and they think freeze dried raw is sky high cost-wise. I thought so too until I saw the information on pic of bag on their site. They're the only freeze dried brand I've seen that puts this on their bags! That one may not be perfect, not close to prey model raw, but quality ingredients including organs, great sourcing. I got it on another site so I could purchase only one bag without having to pay a lot for shipping. It's a hit! My two cats both like! In the future, I'll be buying 3 bags for free shipping and also subscribing brings the cost down. And then additional discounts! Makes it a lot more affordable for me. My honorable mention for Freeze Dried is Small Batch Freeze Dried Raw Cat Meal Bites. I contacted them also about phosphorus content. Once you get past the bot to a real person, their help was excellent! Not only did she give me phosphorus content for all the varieties of the freeze dried but also for their frozen sliders varieties as well. Unfortunately only the beef met my critirea at 1.5%. That's fine. Their ingredients are close to prey based model. Mostly meat, even spleen and kidneys! 😃 Unfortunately, you can't order directly. Sometimes at Pet Supplies Plus, also on Amazon. Not always on sale, so it's pricey. But will continue to keep it in their rotation. Now the not so good stuff. Actually Smalls looks good. But many, many people have commented in FB groups that they have really bad customer service. And the worst crticism. Here goes. I know that many, many people love Viva Raw. And you have praised it many times and I respect your recommendations and great information! I was going to go with it. But then I learned about not feeding foods with too much phosphorus to older cats. I called them because the percentages weren't on their site. (Many don't have the percentages.) The customer service rep seemed very impatient with my questions. I just got a bad feeling, felt uncomfortable. I'd already learned that they'll now be sourcing from farms using antibiotics only when necessary. That's not a deal breaker for me by itself. But with the high phosphorus content and my not so great experience with their customer service, it's out. (Maybe she was having a bad day. Others have said they have good customer service.) What do you think of Darwin's? Very prey model based. I'm considering. The intoductory offer is incredible, too! Forgot to mention. I already feed Raised Right!!! I'm having to transition and I don't care that I can't seem to mix in more than 40% into other wet food. Still great ingredients! It's a keeper! 😃 Open Farm - caution on the kibble only. I've seen some posts about their kibble causing sickness. It's only the kibble. I actually love Open Farm, even with the legumes (I know 🙄... and synthetic supplements, although the minerals are chelated). But I love their sourcing and that they're very passionate about that and also they're very transparent. I use their Rustic Blend wet food as my go-to for transitioning. My cats love all the varieties! Before I started learning more about cat foods, the pet food industry, human grade versus feed grade, feeding raw, etc. (and still learning), I fed them Castor & Pollux for years. Certified organic. They went out of business earlier this year. I switched to organic certified Tried and True. I was running out, so I went to Amazon to purchase. And then saw some reviews. Several people said that they'd opened the cans and there was black stuff in there. Black mold? IDK. But with apparently so little quality control, not for my cats! So the search continued. I ended up choosing Open Farms Rustic Blend. It's not perfect. No canned pet food is. But I'm very careful about where the meat is sourced from and also the veggies and fruit if included being at least non-gmo and optimally organic. After doing exhausting research of many, many other brands/products it's the only "canned" wet food I'll feed them. Rustic Blend isn't actually in a can, BTW. Is more like a stew and comes in little boxes. I also like their bone broth. Has turmeric which is very anti-inflammatory. I always add extra hydration to their foods and sometimes add a little bone broth in addition to filtered water. BTW, I wanted to mention this, not as a food to feed regularly, but for another reason. This one has more carbs than most freeze dried, but I also feed them Dr. Marty's Freeze Dried Raw because I still have some left. I bought on BOGO sale at local pet food store. Quality ingredients, liver, hearts, great sourcing. Like I mentioned, higher carb content than others. But here's why that carb content can work for you if you're transitioning away from kibble which has a lot of carbs and you want to find a freeze dried "kibble substitute". Similar texture and more carbs than most. (But nowhere near the carb content in kibble.) Because of those extra carbs, may be easier to transition with than other freeze dried because that's what they're use to if have been eating kibble At one time, I free fed kibble and only one wet food meal a day. Then changed to feeding the Dr. Marty's as very, very small snacks about twice a day. They loved it! I've never seen them jump up and down for anything else. 😂 So it's a good transition food away from kibble. Yes carbs, but so much more nutritious! They're no longer eating dry food. All wet food now. Successful transition. Still have some Dr. Marty's left. Now feed it rehydrated in rotation with other foods. Very long, I know. Thank you for reading! 😃

I don't have personal experience with darwin's cat food. But my mom was feeding their dog food for a while. Looked good! And yes, there is no perfect cat food. That's why I go with homemade and soon Jericho will eat 100% whole prey (:
@janislevy1ify6 ай бұрын
Thank you for replying! I've considered home made. I think homemade is great and you're so good at teaching how to make it. I actually use the food based supplement that you recommended in a pretty recent video. Only a little bit to fill in the gaps. Has some organs/glands that they're not getting. Also has prebiotics/probiotics that aren't in all their foods. It's like when humans take a daily food based supplement even when eating healthy foods. So they get a little tiny bit in their meals. As a senior (70), I just don't have the energy I used to have so much of. I've seen your video about preparation and storing homemade. I'm just not very fast anymore either. And I rent a room in my friend's house so don't want to take too much time in the kitchen. Also, I don't go out much anymore. For one thing, no car, so mostly order online unless getting a ride from my friend. And Hare Today is somewhat pricey, not complete and Cookie won't eat raw food (unless rehydrated freeze dried) by itself. Yet. So the premade wet food and rehydrated freeze dried raw are just right for me and Cookie and Scamper! So grateful that there are more good choices now! 😻😻🥰

@jesscaticles5 ай бұрын
Every type of pet food has recalls - kibble, wet, raw. I haven't had any bad experience with viva and neither has my mom's 4 cats. However, I will say this is exactly why homemade is my #1 recommendation. Homemade gives you more control over the ingredients and how it's made and therefore more control over the quality. Most recalls for human foods are processed and packaged foods. I rarely see any for fresh meat.

I thought cats are supposed to eat "species appropriate" proteins. In what world do small cats like house cats eat Bison or Goat or Cows?
@oklahomafreedom55366 ай бұрын
I know, right. My cat does eat what I cook. I get bison meat from my Indian commodity My cat will eat small amounts of it, but I usually just give her iams and some fancy feast and Sheba. I'm on a fixed income, I can only feed her what I can afford. That high priced stuff she won't eat anyway.
@jesscaticles6 ай бұрын
That's exactly why I'm moving to whole prey (: What type of proteins are in other commercial brands though? Chicken, turkey, duck, beef, etc. Technically cats would not eat those either. So if we are feeding inappropriate proteins either way, I'd prefer brands who focus on whole food nutrients.

Then she only eats the gizzard and not the commercial cat food. If I just give her the gizzard, then she eats nothing. Most of the time she even rejects Whiskas or Felix and eats cheap kibbles made by Purina. My two about 4 month dumpster cats eat it all minus pork products.

This is a big difference versus a board certified vetininary nutritionist which are vets by training with residency. I tend to prefer brands that conduct feeding trials along with results for multiple things such as urinary pH. Also kinda like looking at micronutrients and macro rather than first listed ingredients which is what nutrients the cat is getting rather than forgoing a food for not being specific on ingredient listing.
