Even Serj admitted in some interview that his vocal parts are hard to be performed live, as he's never had any singing lessons and is self-taught. He, for instance, said he did not know you have to count syllables in a verse, so he would speed up to fit lines like "wake up grab a brush and put a little make up" or "peter's pecker picked another pickle bearing pussy pepper" within a bar. He said it's pain in the ass to sing those rap-like vocals live as he needs to constantly look at his drummer to synch with him and not rush or drag things. He basically did not know what he was doing and experimented with his voice to make his vocal parts work. That's why his vocal style is so great and unique - it's so expressive, out of the box and intuitive. I also remember he struggled with hitting the "self-righteous suicide" high note. Nowadays he sings it just fine, but on recordings from 2001-2002 you can clearly hear he struggled with nailing that part live.

Serj Tankian has one of the most unique voices in all of metal. It's beautifully authentic and some what folky. It's a mix of American and Armenian style and tone. I wouldn't expect anyone else to hit it spot on.

And while Serj is wary to perform his most extreme vocals live, those two do it in every show. Don't get me wrong. Serj is great, but he's far from the most diverse vocalist and his range isn't that insane compared to other vocalists out there.

Yes, It's not incredibly low in general but for a tenor it pretty much is. Also being a tenor he struggles to sing these notes, and even higher ones on live performances, and sometimes he sings it an octave higher

Streamline still remains one of my favorite songs I've ever listened to and the screaming at the end is one of the main reasons why! 1:45 is my favorite line to sing/growl because it's so unique. I, personally, don't find it hard to replicate but the finishing lyrics after are definitely a doozy if I try to extend that growl any longer than the song does. After a long day at work I usually de-stress in my car with Chop Suey! followed by Toxicity. Honestly the perfect combo to scream out my frustrations to or even just for fun. I love System of a down mostly for Serjs vocal lines, power screams and versatility... But if you pay attention to him live, is totaly different... one thing is to create the perfect situation and conditions inside a recording studio to catch the perfect lines, but go ahead, show me what you can do live... Other thing is to use the propper technique, I do not know if Serj has some formal vocal training, but you can hear with the pass of the years that his voice is losing its beauty, from what I know, and a bit for a self expirience, that is for not making that screams and distorted vocals with the correct technique, which is not easy even if you train your voice... So yes, in part those lines are mostly impossible to achieve, without hurting your voice.

Hey mate, great video, but there was one you forgot to mention, it starts at roughly 1:46 in the song 'Sugar' on their debut self titled album. It goes 'I sit, in my desolate room, no lights, no music, just sit here, I killed everyone, run away forever, but now I'm feeling better!' the soft trills which he does in some partss and the contrast between almost whispering in one second and screaming the next is really hard to pull off. That's the thing though. Yes, the scream at the end of Toxicity sounds impossible to do live because it'll ruin your vocal chords, but that's the entire way many vocalists of the metal genre do their recorded studio vocals. They want it to sound as raw and emotional and powerful as they can, so they LITERALLY do it raw and emotional and as powerfully as they can IN the studio. That's why many vocalists don't sound the same live. In the studio, it's just a few takes and they're done, so they can afford to ruin their vocals to make it sound as amazing as they can, but when you do it live and have to do the same lines every single night or every other night, you wanna protect your voice as much as possible, so it won't sound as punchy. At least that's how all the vocalists I know handle themselves and their vocals

I actually love singing the end C5 of Chop Suey, I find almost bringing yourself to a cry helps a lot. It also helps drive a lot of emotion into the song. But you need to carry that note from every buildup prior in order to do it, and you still need good lungs. But sometimes I hit it right, other times I land more mellow, which still has never been a terrible sound either. But I find that the hardest part of Chop Suey is the rap areas with the whispers. I enjoy singing, and it's always fun to try a real challenge.

Now I'm no tenor (I'm more of a baritone who leans more towards bass for perspective), but I've been able to fairly comfortably reach some of the highs in this video. Specifically the chop suey one. It may be because I'm going into the half-falsetto where my base voice is still audible without slipping into the soft sounding vocals. Another scream that's not on this video, but still fits that realm was the screams in question! Though I do tend to lose control of my voice the second time.

Hey I wanted to add something here since I am a technically decent screamer. For anyone out there trying to do some of the things he's doing: be warned that achieving that sound can be harmful to your voice as a whole. However on the other side of the coin, there are ways of accomplishing those sounds without harming yourself. There's a delicate balance of push/power/airflow that you have to practice. As some have said in the comments already Serj wasn't a trained vocalist so he was definitely just soulfully grabbing those sounds - but with a lot of practice and training you *can* healthily create these noises. I have also been categorized as a "baritone" vocalist but am able to reach stupidly high (peak out around B6-C6 but it's hardly usable haha), and in context with this video can hit these notes being discussed without damage. All this is to say - there's no rules, only guidelines. None of us will ever be or sound exactly like Serj, but we can rock as hard as him if we try haha

I have been learning a lot from a mix of serj's vocals and his opera technique, rnb artists like anderson paak and sir, as well as less conventional singers like anthony green from circa survive. I find that imitating a wide variety of artists as closely as possibly really gives you a feel for the true possibilities that your own voice can achieve. I spend a lot of time studying the mechanics of the body and how it creates sound. It's kind of addicting once you start to understand the textural qualities of the human voice. As someone who is also fascinated by björk lately, I am eager to listen to her Medúlla album

But yes I think its true that he is way more sustainable, but singing Heavy music without screams, not being able to move much because of back injuries, and then your singing voice doesn't even sound as good as it used to? its awful, I don't see how sounding like Squidward sounds good. His real voice is much more unique anyways. He can take singing lessons and sound as great as he used to, for being in his 50s he can sound better. Howard Jones from Killswitch Engage for example, he sounds the same if not even better than 20 years ago, and he is 51 🤷‍♂

I played some system of a down for my grandma, and she said that he sounds awful, nothing is remotely understandable and his voice is the worst she's heard from anyone I have showed her and was too raspy at parts. She later said that thier songs have no harmony or flow. My families and especially my grandmas taste in music is based off of what she hears at church so she has no idea what good singing is, the people she hears sing are just local members of the church who volunteered to sing, in other words she doesn't know the difference between good and bad singing and instead judges weather to like a musician by what they sing about.
