Hey Dave, I live up in Gainesville and got into orchids a couple of years ago and now have over 100. My experience pretty much mirrors what you think in that my hardcane Dendrobiums definitely don’t like anything under 60° and neither does my Grammatophyllum. I also have Rhynchostylis (that genus you couldn’t think of in a recent video), and like its close relative the Vandas, it doesn’t like cold weather. It lost a few of its lower leaves. My Epidendrum radicans can take a lot of cold. We have been getting down into the 30’s and they are actively growing. We even got down to 26, but those are under my covered porch so it probably didn’t actually get to 26. My Catts get down to the 40’s with no ill effects, same with Encyclias. I leave my Oncidiums out into the 30’s and they are fine. The Phals don’t seem to mind the 40’s either.

Great video and very timely for those of us growing orchids outdoors in Florida. I have most of my cattleyas, my Sharry Baby, and a few vandas growing outdoors- the vandas move into the garage if it will go below 50 overnight but I don’t move the rest to the garage until it’s going to go below 40 for a few nights. Sometimes I might choose to cover them instead if it’s only a super short cold snap. It’s worked well for me fortunately for years but I think I will try your tip to spray them with the epsom salts solution for added cold protection so thanks for that 😊. I am also inspired by your retracting hurricane screens and heavy duty heater for your lanai for winter. Now I have to get my husband to buy into doing something like this for our front porch 😂😉

Thanks Dave for your tips. I'm in Kendall so it doesn’t get that cold down here. We learn from each other as we grow our plants. God bless❤

That is tiger orchid or grammatophyllum a native of the Philippines. It blooms every 2-4 years. The flowers of tiger orchid grow in the form of inflorescence with a cluster of flowers arranged on a long stem that grows up to 2 meters in size.

Thank you for some great ideas and tips!!! We have 10’ of snow first time in many many years and I could not save them all. One more orchid that hates cold is brassavola type. I found the hard way how they lose it leaves very quickly!

Def a Schomburkgia. My guess is Schomburkgia crispa or Schomburkgia undulata. Or a hybrid of one of them. A lot of them look similar. Including fimbriata. But probably can't enter it in a show if ya aren't sure. Gorgeous though! Truly.

Love your orchid set up. Keep the videos coming. How about traveling to the Redlands and feature the orchid nurseries, such as RF Orchids and Banjong.

Hi Dave☺️🙌I enjoyed watching😄🤲💖I have cold sensitive Vandas, and yeah, they have plenty of cold damage to tell me that. The dendrobium nobile types are absolutely fine in cold. Here they get down to 23℃ fahrenheit without a problem, and the dendrobium lindleyi I have hanging under a conifer tree in those cold temperatures too. Almost everyday here has sunshine. It feels warm and the air temperature is about 50℃ fahrenheit. The neighbor even has nobile types in her trees, and they have been there for about 10+ years👍The phalaenopsis don't like under 50℃, but they can Winter well at about 59℃ and even grow and flower well. Just keep the phalaenopsis away from direct sunshine on them. They are vampires. A lot of growers do grow them under sunshine, but they don't thrive. To thrive they need cool shade. Thanks again Dave and have a great day😃

My Grammataphylum did the exact same thing. Most likely because I over watered it too. The bulbs look healthy however, do you think it will recover?
@bibicheknauf416313 күн бұрын
If it lost its leaves because of the cold, it will come back. Mine did come back and bloomed last summer after losing all its leaves last winter. If it’s from watering too much, I am not sure 😍

P.S. i would consider Schomburkgia orchids to be very cold sensitive. Be careful there unless you have an excpetion. If you think vandas are sensitive to cold.. so are Schomburkgia and id say more so in majority of cases.
@DavesOrchidOasis8 күн бұрын
wow . I didn't know that. Thank you. I didn't bring them in during this cold snap. concerning.

Sadly, I have to do a lot of the “shuffle” as most of my orchids are outside of my lanai. But, luckily, I do not have as many as you do😍

Typically phalaenopsis should not go under about 59. But if theyre dryer and its still and cold, maybe a tiny bit more. And if its not a sudden drop.

Whlie phals need a drop in temps to trigger bloom spikes, it doesn’t have to be drastic… 10 or so degrees for a period of time is sufficient. LOVE your overkill winterized lanai.
@808beastsplayground14 күн бұрын
Phals you need to mount them and when you mount them they need to be facing down that way when you water it runs down like it would in nature so not to rot the crown that’s the secret I grow my phals on trees just like they would be in nature get them out of pots they don’t like that they want their roots like vandas exposed aloha from Hawaii 🤙 and dont be afraid reach out

Humidity makes the cold worse , cold up north is lessened by the dry air. Those ground orchids will be ok. I have a bunch growing around the maple tree upfront if they do die back they'll come back they are very hardy. Any new orchids i get with minimal root growth i bring in.
