Orchids in nature don't get repotted; but People do.

In Australia,we automatically think of Cymbidiums or Phalaenopsis. NEVER Cattleya, in fact, although do have one, they are hard to find in stores. Phalaenopsis being the "go to" mothers day present.

How do you keep up with the watering? I have to pot mine because I just don’t have near the amount of time needed to water daily. So won’t the medium degrade and need to be replaced?

I’m in southeast Florida as well. I used to have 150 Orchids, including phaleonopsis (zero issues) but I’m starting a new collection. Currently, I just have 2 phals. I set the pot in a tray & water until the tray is full. I let the plants sit in the tray for 30-40 minutes roughly once a week. I water all my plants this way when they dry out completely. They’re very happy & blemish free. They’re all inside under grow lights.

Shhh!!!! Poor New Zealand - I guess Trump will invade it in order to steal their expensive tree fern resources the same way as he wants to steal Greenland's, Venulsula's, & Palestine's gigantic Gaza Offshore Oil Reserves now.

If you love orchids, you HAVE to love orchid roots!

Some parts of that orchid aren’t healthy and need to be trimmed off to further protect the plant and keep it going healthy. I do agree some people do repot their plants way too much which affects the plants health and ability to keep growing. It also makes the plants more susceptible to disease

I wish that I had known this when I had an orchid. It survived for several years, despite my poor care, but then it gave up the fight. Sad.

Yes, this might works if you live in hot climate. Ppl who live in cold climates can not get away with this. We can't grow them in hanging baskets.

Hi Dave, Thank you very much for the video, lots of useful info. I was just wondering how you handle watering your orchids if you have to go away for a week. Greetings from South Virginia!

Orchids do need to be repotted. Not often but as needed. The need is actually when the substrate starts to break down , that will harm the plant. Rot can fester. Roots also get rotted over time and that also adds to the substrate. At some point the entire plant’s needs to refresh. It’s not about aesthetics but plant health.

I love your Chollawood and last black, airy basket. However, I mostly currently use clear pots as keeping an eye on the roots stops me killing orchids by overwatering.

Oh oh, I only have one orchid, was a gift from supermarket so don’t know what it is, I repotted into terracotta in orchid mix, I’m getting new roots but no flowers yet. I’ve seen people keep them in those see through plastic containers and they keep blooming.

I've given up on tags because I keep losing them, especially when high winds would topple and ransack the area. I write them on the pots now with permanent texta/marker

P.S. i would consider Schomburkgia orchids to be very cold sensitive. Be careful there unless you have an excpetion. If you think vandas are sensitive to cold.. so are Schomburkgia and id say more so in majority of cases.
@DavesOrchidOasis6 күн бұрын
wow . I didn't know that. Thank you. I didn't bring them in during this cold snap. concerning.

Typically phalaenopsis should not go under about 59. But if theyre dryer and its still and cold, maybe a tiny bit more. And if its not a sudden drop.

Def a Schomburkgia. My guess is Schomburkgia crispa or Schomburkgia undulata. Or a hybrid of one of them. A lot of them look similar. Including fimbriata. But probably can't enter it in a show if ya aren't sure. Gorgeous though! Truly.

Hey Dave, I live up in Gainesville and got into orchids a couple of years ago and now have over 100. My experience pretty much mirrors what you think in that my hardcane Dendrobiums definitely don’t like anything under 60° and neither does my Grammatophyllum. I also have Rhynchostylis (that genus you couldn’t think of in a recent video), and like its close relative the Vandas, it doesn’t like cold weather. It lost a few of its lower leaves. My Epidendrum radicans can take a lot of cold. We have been getting down into the 30’s and they are actively growing. We even got down to 26, but those are under my covered porch so it probably didn’t actually get to 26. My Catts get down to the 40’s with no ill effects, same with Encyclias. I leave my Oncidiums out into the 30’s and they are fine. The Phals don’t seem to mind the 40’s either.

I don't as much. Just as long as the weather is not going below 50 for a couple days. Even then maybe every other day.
