Top 6 Pokémon Problems with the Paldea Region

Every region in Pokémon has its own quirks making them set apart from each other, but that isn't always a good thing... No region is safe from critique and Paldea is no different, since Gen 9 made some pretty interesting choices, even outside of the actual gameplay limitations. So looking at Paldea through the lens of actually being there, what would be some of the issues that would bother most people there?

The biggest problem with Paldea, in my most humble opinion, is the absolutely atrocious Shiny Forms of many of its creatures

4. Biggest issue and the let down to me is how cities are just hub for the gym. They got nothing else going on to make you visit twice.

Fun fact: I actually live in a city in Paldea… well not entirly… but the place called Porto Marinada existis here in Portugal, it’s called “Costa Nova do Prado” and has the striped colorful houses like the games potray and even the market is like that in here. At least in Orre, the vast amount of empty space isn't occupied by Pokémon, so you're not in any danger unless Cipher decided to revive itself for the third time and you accidentally stumbled upon their new secret base

In regards to Team Star: 1) they never coerced others into joining, they simply asked, and 2) the Starmobiles were their weapons to fight against their bullies (not that they did use them, cause the bullies surrendered & dropped out) In regards to the scarlet/violet book you got it backwards: the people thought the info Heath wrote in it was bogus, so it was deemed fictional by the populace. The professor (sada/turo) however believed the info Heath wrote, and investigated & invested time & money into their projects

After you sleep in the school for the first time, the game says "You spent your days at the academy" which I assume there were classes there until the Treasure Hunt started. I think the Treasure Hunt is just a field project that the students can take part if they sign up beforehand. Also, I think the Pokémon League Association sponsors the school. And the issue with Team Star is that they have been skipping classes for almost one year to play videogames until late night (yes, this actually happened before your raid in the Posion Crew). My problem with the Paldea is how the heck Geeta keeps her position when EVERY gym leader hates her (specially Larry, he deserve more breaks and a raise) and her team is too weak, I mean I've beaten her with a mono grass, flying, rock and bug teams.

I liked the distance between towns as it gave a sense of realism in a way and of actual journeying. It always bugged me how in older Pokemon titles the routes seemed very small, like how far away exactly is Saffron City and Celadon City? It seems you can walk across the map in a few minutes. Of course it's just a scaled down representation of the game but it's nice to have a better sense of how far away these places are What I really didn't like was just how wasted the towns felt, they look nice and have a lot of buildings and people but you can't enter any of them aside from 1 or 2 stores, but then you're just thrust into a buying menu and don't even get to see the place. Even Galar at least let you enter the buildings and gave a sense of living/life to the towns

I mean, this is the pokemon world, Sootopolis manages to surrvive as well despite the terrible transportation, there are still things like Helicopters, Teleporters (as seen with actual Pokemon or teleporter tiles like in many villain bases), and just pokemon in general being good for transport and supply.

If something like an alakazam or just about any psychic type can teleport people between towns, and there are bird Pokémon capable of carrying several people's worth of weight in taxis, why would you ever want to build roads? Just seems slower and more dangerous imo. It would probably be easier for alfornada to get resources in and out compared to other towns due to the sheer amount of psychic type trainers in there who can have their Pokémon use teleport to get in and out with stuff they need.

Yeah, people forget how pokemon powers and advanced technology change things up quite a bit. They can outright store physical objects in digital form, that alone would greatly reduce transportation issues.

I highly recommend that you play ⭐Starfall Street⭐ again, but paying a little more attention. Also, there is a timeskip in the start of the game between our enrollment in the Academy and the start of the Treasure Hunt. I suppose we have actual classes during that time.

@@emperorcubone I believe you are focusing too much in this "Never returning" thing. Even though an infinite amount of days can pass in the gameplay, that's not the same in-universe. Who knows, maybe all four storylines canonically happened in less than only one month? We got to remember that Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are still videogames, and the Treasure Hunt never actually ends because the gameplay can't just end. Just because we never see our characters returning to school, it doesn't mean they didn't canonically return or that they won't eventually return. But returning to school would mean that the playable segment is over, and that can't just happen in a game. There are uncountable times when a game breaks its own lore or canon rules and limitations for gameplay purposes. That's also why you can go back to Area Zero and capture Paradox Pokémon even after all the trouble that going there caused and how dangerous those Pokémon are. Canonically, you've never returned there, but Pokémon doesn't usually make places that are temporarily accessible or uncatchable Pokémon. So for the sake of the gameplay, we just pretend to forget the rule that forbids students from going there and the fact that a lot of people died there because of how dangerous that place is. If I've learned anything from dragonite and octillery, it's to never try and expect where an evolution line is heading. It's still a little confusing when people think a final evo ABSOLUTELY 100% should/shouldn't end up like it did, when the very first generation set a precident for evolutions having different body plans from their pre evolutions Tsareena, coalossal, salamence, trapinch, sunflora, weezing, nidoking, nidoqueen and rhydon, all change body plans when evolving, and I could keep going

As a counterpoint to Numbers 5 & 6, the story of the game is run with the implication that you're attending classes during your treasure hunt. The Bosses of Team Star have all been skipping School for 18 Months Straight. That's actually extremely lenient for an education system. As for a counterpoint to Number 1, The Great Crater of Paldea is mentioned to be extremely dangerous. They clearly know enough about it to know that the place is too dangerous for just anyone to explore. The abandoned structures should be proof that the place is super dangerous, especially when we see the proof of the Professor being KILLED down there.

Yes, that's exactly what was going through my mind about Area Zero: it's very clearly too dangerous to explore easily, which is why it had been largely untouched up until the latter part of the game's story. What he mentioned about sending people in and "letting them die in the name of science" or however he put it would be EXTREMELY counterproductive, because if people are dying down there, then HOW EXACTLY are other people getting whatever information those people who sacrificed their lives found out? Sure, it does mean that there is a real threat of Paradox Pokemon entering their world, but the reason why nothing had been done about it until that point in the game is because they couldn't explore Area Zero safely

To be fair for 5 and 6 and team star each day in paldea is about an hour long. Getting a good nights sleep causes you to miss more than a week of classes. Unless you’re stuck in the tutorial in which case that one day literally never ends. At the final problem this is a world where you transfer multiple pets and animals to a near unlimited storage ranch by the internet without harming them at all, a ranch that could hold comfortably more things then noah’s arc could and you can call them in and out at any time, with creatures that range from tiny to impossibly tall. This is also a world where your cellphone has a rottom in it. Just make a rottom camera drone and have them take a few pictures down there with some readings. It’s not like the live connection is bad in there you can call the cabs and connect to the Pokemon internet down there, and if the rotom is in danger they just abandon the object and get out of there. Sure it made sense not to explore it back then but now they don’t really have an excuse. They also have clear teleportation down there so they can easily call for backup if needed from the way points.

I agree that the going between cities is ridiculous. Alfornada (all for naught) being the the worst. But if you had taken the classes, you'd know that a previous king had sent multiple expeditions down. Also the treasure hunt takes place a month or so after you start.

Unlike what other people think, I'm of the opinion that Team Stars weren't designed to be bad guys. In the beginning of the game you meet them and assume they're because they're trying to force Penny to join. But then in Operation Starfall, you learn here and there they're aren't as bad as people make them out to be, and that they're actually a nice and supportive group of people.

2:10 regarding school attendance, the Treasure Hunt only lasts for a portion of the year (and while not required in gameplay, in the story you do attend classes during it as the teachers recognize you regardless of if you actually go to the classes while playing the game). Team Star have been truant for over a year without permission. And class attendance is required to graduate, as Clavel tells Arven how he has to get a lot of credits if he hopes to graduate with his peers after missing so much school. Also, while it is the biggest school in the region, it's not the only one. As with every pokemon region, there is implied to be a lot more in the towns and cities than what they actually depict.

@@mlpfanboy1701 you're supposed to attend the school for multiple years, with the Treasure Hunt taking place for part of the year once a year. The classes and tests viewable in the game are simply what was programmed in, they're not supposed to be everything the character would experience.

I think the chain link fence that is preventing dinosaurs and/ or robots rampaging around cause some scientist was bored is probably up there. Its like the real world area 51 but not as secure. You know how many children would get eaten by a roaring moon cause they didnt listen to the "dont go there cause I said so". Even the pokemon leagues have at least one guard. Theoretically anyone with a starraptor could fly down there to check it out

@@emperorcubonethe only threatening team leader i pounded into the dirt after sympathizing with was team flare, Lysander was an amazing generous guy before he saw the horrors of humanity at its worst and became evil for that, he was even crying for the Pokemon that would be killed in his plan. Team plasmas N i dont count as the plasma leader otherwise he would be the other one i sympathized with but still beat to the ground. getsis was a narssicist, i had no problems pounding into the dirt with a smile on my face having no respect for him, team galactics leader was a sociopath with a god complex he wanted to make cannon (again i defeated him happily), team magma and team aqua leaders were dunces who didn’t stop to think “should we” for really dumb reasons and i knew that if i didn’t stop them nature was doomed. Team skull may have been less of a threat than team rocket but they were still menaces. Team rocket is a mafia organization. Team star however were treated as vandals when they didn’t really do anything much rather then be a minor annoyance, and they became that because they were hurt in the worst ways.

3:05 Did you really pay attention to what Team Star originally did? They banded together to confront their bullies with words but then those guys wimped out SO hard they quit the school. Now everyone thought Team Star were the bullies. Though it does make you wonder why they didn't just talk Director Clavell about it so there is some issues with that. 5:25 OR it's more furry bait. If they would have added an extra location per town, Like making at least one of the Towers in Levincia an explorable building, I think the region would have felt a lot more better. Wish they put some buildings along the open areas as well

It bugs me how we can't enter most of the buildings and talk to any potential NPCs that are inside. The Paldea and Kitakami regions/ lands are sorely lacking in content. The game was clearly rushed. Such a shame.

Aside from the long list of technical issues. I’d say with the region itself, most of the locations are boring as sin except for the great crater. The attempt at realism backfired hard because now, locations feel so…bland. Secondly, personal opinion but I’d say the Pokémon for the most part are undercooked. They tried to give them all little gimmicks but they feel so half baked and trying to give most of them gimmicks ironically makes them all feel less special.

I mean ORAS (and really Hoenn in general) really makes so many locations feel distinct and memorable while on the 3ds. It really just seems like they didn’t didn’t have the time in production or they just flat out had one idea for an interesting locale and just stopped there. For an open world there isn’t any natural wonders to explore or any towns with interesting concepts. (For example a frozen ice dungeon glacier, islands with tropical or subtropical climates where people take advantage of the storms in some way, a city that uses the strong tides to power it, a city above the clouds on a mountain where life is tough but the people are tougher, just some locations with imagination like area zero had)

The school setting is an excuse for limiting the custom character options. Houen, Shin'ou, Kalos, and Alola did schools much better since they are minor places you can skip like they are training modes. Pokémon is about leaving school and home to start on your journey. The trainer schools give you the basics like type matchups and some battles. Really a bad idea to make regions like the real life countries because even the Japanese references are more of in the background in Kanto- and Jouto that they do not get in the way of gameplay.

Using a Revaroom or Veroom to power a vehicle in a racing minigame would make those Pokémon tolerable, they are aggressive buggers that act like overconfident vermin. Same with Veluxa.

my main question is what happened to the other parent of arven. my hjead canon is that a majority of scientist were killed by the paradox pokemon and the people in charge of paldea are covering it up in case some bright eyed trainer decides to mess with that and possibly end up like the scientist or maybe bring some foreign irrate monster into town. maybe thats why the iron tread/great tusk is in the desert. they figured if its in a part where humans wont really go around. especially if its the one in the book that the professor saw which i assume it is.

I assume the academy is not a public high school but a vocational school, as this explains why the player character has apparently moved from out of the region to go there. I do agree that the games would benefit from clarifying this, though, as different places in the world (or even in the US) do schooling pretty differently.

​@@emperorcubone It's not that they don't care, it's that they don't want others to get hurt. Throughout the game, the horrors of what could possibly be in area zero are brought up. Just imagine, what if paldea is afraid that if someone goes down to area zero, they could catch powerful pokemon, like the paradox pokemon, manipulate them, and use them to attack humans. Maybe paldea is afraid that someone with the wrong intentions could harness the energy from all of the Tera crystals an use that to power a weapon that could be used to destroy paldea. In Area Zero, it is very easy to get lost. There are so many different paths and areas to explore. Area Zero has so many crystals, powerful pokemon, and confusing pathways that maybe it's for the better that nobody really knows what's going on down there. If people knew, then that would be terrifying. A disaster like Galar's darkest day could ensue. So many terrible things could happen.

One of the big issues that is miss opportunity was Regional and Convergent Forms. It is weird that Alola, Galar and Hisui has regional forms to choose for players. Doesn’t make sense they only had two regional forms (Taurus other breed forms don’t count) and three convergent evolutionary lines forms. It be awesome to see a regional forms for Dratini, Ekans, Shuckle, Snubble, Feebas, Psyduck and Vullaby evolutionary lines or a Shinx, Gible, Gasty, Lapras, Swablu and Onix convergent forms. Hopefully Gen 10 will a good amount of regional and convergent forms in the next game. Few minutes later playing the games. Yeah, the unchanged issue to address the recurring issue in the game series. The obvious starter favoritism type. It is generation 9 and they still keep making the fire starter evolutionary lines the main focus for marketing. Again. Seriously? Sceptile, Greninja, Feraligatr, Serperrior and other Grass and Water starters has some good designs for final evolutions. But, GF is so driven to ensuring the fire starter is more important than the other two choices both in the game anime series. If Gen 10 starters receive a monster/animal like final evolutions, you can bet GF will double on the fire starter design again. Biggest wishful thinking that GF will make new popular the grass or water starter final evolutions like powerhouse like a Torterra and Swampert or speedy starters like Sceptile and Greninja. If Pokemon Horizon and Pokemon XY/XYZ series can make a cat and frog starters popular, then GF can let a grass and water starter receive a main character's ace treatment again. It cool to see a Grass/Dragon type or Water/Ice type starter. Hoping Gen 10 is not another rushed again like S&M/US&UM, S&S, BDSP and S&V games games again.

The funny thing is that a boarding school could have made for a very interesting backdrop to a game with more limited scope and scale set almost entirely in that school, or maybe a game with a guided fieldtrip like path through the region like the Alola trials, but it is just such a dissonant framing device for the first ever fully open world Pokémon game.

Yeah my biggest problem that really killed my immersion was the #2 complaint. For all the other games the routes were believable. Sure maybe they were often dirt paths but there usually wasn’t that much space in between civilization, so it’s excusable. This…. The towns really just felt like they were plopped in the middle of the wilderness with very little realistically connecting them

Paldea’s new roster is some if the worst pokémon I’ve ever seen. Don’t get me wrong I love many of them(like the past paradoxes, the legendaries, Lowkix, Cetitan, and Tauros variants) but it had too many duds to ignore(like Flamigo, Maushold, Dudunsparce, Spidops and most of the violet paradoxes)

sigh... where do I even begin with this one... 6. It is specifically said at the beginning after getting your starter that you stayed in school for a period of time, a term or something, doing school work as it is, which the game leaves out because people don't play pokemon for the school sim. Class attendance during the treasure hunt is NOT compulsory as the treasure hunt IS your school work, with any class you show up to being extra-curricular. Students of all ages can enrol and study is based on the exact same thing in real life in Spain. 5. Team Star members are NOT attending the treasure hunt, and the school tracks who is and who isn't, so it's easy for the school to know who is actually doing school work (treasure hunt) and who is just truanting. They aren't necessarily bullying other students, rather just recruiting for support and be trouble makers in general or be against rules. They fiercely defend each other when they THINK one of them was being bullied whether it's the case or not, as their experiences has made them use the better safe than sorry mindset. 4. Convergent evolution, this is the gen and region that introduced it after all, seeing as how humans are the most adaptable and successful pokemon, the other pokemon are evolving to embrace human-like traits that allow them to survive better in their own environment and/or interacting with humans better. And how does Spidops even remotely resemble a human apart from it's posture? And Garganacle looks like an ape, so ape like pokemon is too human-like? 3. Just because the explorable areas of Kitakami is only so much, doesn't mean that's the ENTIRE region, and just because that area is only accessible via a bus, doesn't mean a bus is the only mode of transport some one can get to Kitakami from Paldea. It's probably somewhere near the first 4 regions and takes a plane to get to the local airport and the rest is done by bus. 2. Each city/town is self sufficient to carry on it's day to day, with travelling done by squakabillies and cyclizards, just because the MC gets a fancy one doesn't mean the regular ones can't do what they can to travel. 1. Area Zero is way too dangerous for people to continuously go down in expeditions and die, so the government couldn't in good conscience send more to their doom, especially since the last expedition came back with "evidence" of how dangerous the local fauna is. Since there hasn't been ANYTHING happening over the history of Area Zero as long as it's been left alone, the government sees no reason to send people down there to die. With the low population, the government isn't able to put it on lock down, and most people aren't going down there to tempt fate. This also explains why sada/turo is all alone down there as it's their obsession with the paradox pokemon that make them recklessly go where most sensible people wouldn't. As for why the paradox titan was able to escape, who's there to keep it from doing so? Pretty much all of your points can be explained with a few minutes of logical thinking, I would recommend doing more research about the lore and think logically before claiming that these are problems that makes no sense when they perfectly do.

On the class schedule, classes unlock at points in the story and I believe that the assumption is that them telling you that you need to go back. Yes, for game play and story you can completely ignore these classes, but I believe canonly, every time you get the alert "New classes available" your character returns to the school to take those classes. However, there is an issue with schooling, Nemona enrolled one year before you but is a Paldea native ... and there are kids younger than her enrolled, why did she wait so long? How are you and Nemona in the same class? Why are there kids younger than you in the class with you? So school still doesn't make too much sense. As for Area Zero, outside of the Titan you face, no other paradox pokemon are known to have broke containment ... canonly. The Tera Raid events can be argued to be "non-canon." And it was stated that exploration into Area Zero is extremely difficult and controlled by the Pokemon League. So, the average person isn't necessarily going to care. While people are curious, they are curious about things they are interested in. I love learning about new animals, but I have a friend who finds that dull and loves knowing things about cars. All that is required is that most people either do not care about Area Zero or are denied permission to explore by the League. Remember in the pokemon world, they are able to reduce the mass of objects ... otherwise, how can any child throw out a Snorlax? And we are able to keep tons of items in a backpack for quick use. So, one pallet of food could be equal to an entire grocery store in their world. As for medicine, that's always been a little odd in the pokemon world too. We only have one game where humans get hurt to go off of, and humans seem to heal like pokemon, get a good rest and you're fine.

One Gen 9 issue I have is in regards to how they handled giving new evolutions to older Pokémon. Some of the chioces make sense. But, some of them really don't. Did Bisharp & Duraludon need new evolutions? You literally have Pokémon already in the game like Sunflora & Chimecho that deserve evolutions way more imo.

I think there's a lot of problems with Paldea don't get me wrong there's a few real bangers but a lot of the designs are trash a lot of the shinies are trash it was wicked easy you think by now they would put a difficulty mode seeing's how over half of their fanbase are older people from nostalgia and ones that never lost love for the franchise as a whole! I think right now the devs are playing it safe from now on since this is their first open world game, a feat no Pokémon game can do until now. As for not being able to be inside buildings, I guess they're trying to be a bit realistic as they don't kids to enter people's houses without permission. It's a small loss as the inside of the houses are all the same in every game anyways.

One problem I have with Paldea is just the overload of items everywhere; I'm not saying we need hidden items and HMs back, but when you have 700 revives and 100 vitamins for doing basically nothing it just removes a layer of complexity. Too much of this game can be played with one hand while you're doing something else. Also, why can't we go inside buildings? I wish more "world-building" had been done with the cities, instead of just the wild areas. And yeah, all the humanoid Pokemon are off-putting. I'm not a big fan of the "occupational starter" trend that started in Gen VIII. What's the grass-starter going to be in Gen X, a giraffe lawyer?

I think point #4 has nothing to do with the region but more so the Pokémon company themselves. Recently they seem obsessed with making as many Pokémon as possible humanoid shaped even if that doesn’t suit the original design.
