If you do forget to call in your prescriptions for your pet, do not, do not, do not call up your vet and start cursing/screaming at the receptionist/tech who answers the call, demanding that we "get Fluffy's medications filled right f***ing now or s*** will go down." Because if the support staff comes up to me telling me you were a jerk to them, as the Dr. I am going to make sure your refill request is the LAST one I review that particular day. I am not an owner, so I can't terminate you as a client, but if I were, you would maybe get one refill and a copy of your records to find another vet. I recall this scenario happening when I first graduated almost 6 years ago. Really amazing, nice, sweet, rockstar vet tech answers the phone and I can hear her trying her best to appease a client. She gets off the phone and I ask what happened. So she tells me that the owner was curing her out about how we have to get his pet's medication refilled RIGHT NOW because he is out. She handed me the refill request. You know what I did with it? Lifted up the stack of prescription refill requests and put it at the bottom. We had another client call in the same day, same situation. Forgot to call in the prescription refill request ahead of time and was out as of that morning. This client, however, was sweet as could be. She called in apologizing to us, acknowledging she knows we are busy, but if we could find any possible way to have her dog's medication refilled for that night, she would appreciate it. If not, she said she totally understood. Guess where that refill request went? Onto my desk so I could remember to complete it in time for her to pick up before closing. Just remember-- kindness gets you places. Rage/aggression and being outright mean gets you at the back of the stack/queue. We are all human, I regularly forget to call in my own medication refills on time, that is my fault. I do not call up my pharmacy and curse them out for my mistake, I ask kindly if there is any way I could get it same day and if not, I have to wait until they can fill it. It isn't their fault I waited until I was out of medications.

Sooo true! When I started as a vet, people thought I was too young to be a vet. Then one day somebody demanded a male docter, just because that was her preferance 🤔. Now I'm a surgeon in a veterinairy referral hospital and people think I'm too young to perform surgery on their pets. Like, your own older vet sends you to me, because clearly I have a set of skills that your older vet doesn't have. Why is that so hard to believe?

Showing up as a new client for a 30 minute appointment with a senior pet (plethora of problems), with paper records in hand, and answering every question with “idk, it’s in the record.” Like, sure, I can sit there and read the record in front of you for 15 minutes of your appointment time, but then we’re not getting anything done. PLEASE send the record early, or drop it off before the appointment, or something. (It also helps when you’re actually able to answer history questions. 🙂)

Great video. Good info for owners. Recently I had an older gentleman as a client. His pet had a complex dermatology condition and I said “in my experience “ while discussing his pet. He stopped me and said “how much experience could you have you don’t look old enough to have experience “. I just had to laugh and replied “sir I have been a veterinarian for over 15 years and over a decade of experience in only veterinary dermatology alone”. His wife looked mortified.

One of my boys (dog) was diagnosed with sarcoma in December and given how aggressive the cancer was he was able to get him in within the week to get it removed. It was a very difficult surgery because he also had a large cyst in the same spot and they werent sure if they would be able to close the wound once they remove everything but they did and im forever grateful. I know this is an old video, but I have an epileptic dog and I monitor his meds like you would a human, with the daily tracking boxes and everything. I always know the exact number he has and how many days it will last. I’ve missed a pill, I know the consequences and I know they’re extreme. I don’t wait until the last day to ask for the refill, but the pharmacists often do. I understand pheno is a serious drug in need of controls, but it’s the pharmacy that won’t listen to the veterinarian or me about refills. I’ve switched pharmacists several times over it and the issues persist. They won’t fill it unless it’s within three days, they want to see a matched phone script and paper one, was his dose increased? Need to go through the whole process again. It ranks pretty high on my list of worst things about canine epilepsy if I’m honest. Edit: I have a giant breed dog, his dosage is enough to be dangerous to some humans, which is why they put me through this stuff and I understand it helps protect people, but it also puts him at risk so is very frustrating unfortunately.

This wasn't for one of my pets, but instead for one of the times I went to the ENT. A newly graduated ENT was starting her first day on a 2 week trial basis with my regular ENT. (After the 2 weeks, if my regular ENT felt she did well enough, then he would bring her on permanently.) My regular ENT had her doing basic tasks to get used to how things worked at his practice. The new ENT showed me to the patient room. When I sat down she asked me how long I had had vertigo for, and if I would be interested in trying a new, completely non-invasive technique to get rid of the vertigo. I had given up on finding a solution to my severe vertigo that I had been suffering from for over 20 years. (The condition was so bad that if I closed my eyes I would fall over.) She told me that the technique was still in the research phases, however it was invented/discovered my the doctor she had worked with to complete her ENT level medical degree, about 2 years prior. That doctor, herself, and a few other ENT med student/doctors had run pretty extensive tests, and they had almost a 100% improvement rate; interestingly, with practically no complications. She described the treatment: -- Basically a dance dip done with the patient starting in a sitting position on an exam table. -- The doctor doing a few specific movements with the patient's head as the doctor quickly, while supporting the patient, lowers the patient to the table with the patient's head either ending up laying on the table or hanging over the table. -- The patient then holds the position the doctor leaves them in for 5 -- 15 minutes. -- That's it. I enthusiastically agreed to the treatment. Of course, as this was her first day on the job, and she was still under trial, she would need the permission of the head ENT in order to do any treatments. My ENT figured that if I was willing, then the only other condition was that he wanted to watch the procedure. She then did the procedure and I was only able to hold the position for 2 minutes due to my vertigo. When I sat up, after the vertigo had it's fun (made me throw up), I realized that my upright vertigo was reduced by about 50%!!! The new ENT warned me that it was possible to have some or full regression after each treatment. Apparently she had never heard of a case as severe as mine, nor as perfect for this type of treatment. See, in the inner ear are these tiny rocks made from some type of crystal. They belong in certain tiny cavities in the inner ear. When they are not in their cavities, they cause vertigo. It looked like most of these rocks in my head had broken loose and were just rattling around. The dance dip put some of the rocks back where they belonged. Once there they tended to stick into their correct cavities. It took 4 visits for the new ENT to get all those loose rocks back where they belonged. On my second visit, about 4 days later, I noticed that the new ENT was now a full member of the staff. Ever since that incident I realized the value of new doctors. Of course, experience goes a long way, too. But I now know there are benefits and trade-offs between new doctors who are aware of a lot of the newest treatments and experienced doctors who can often just glance at a situation and have a good idea of what the patient's condition is.

The RX topic is so true! They wait until the day before 4th of July or New Year's and that's when I will have more than a dozen people calling to get their dogs calming medicine. Sparky can't make it through this firework holiday because I waited till the last minute to get their medication even though this happens every year. The Holiday and, sparky flipping out over the fireworks. I will think my coworker that helps keep our clinic have as best of an on-site pharmacy because if most of these people had to wait 6 hours for their medication they already wouldn't know what to do. This makes me think that we actually do something extremely nice for our customers along with also feeling them on site within 1 hour and then also handling faxes calling in prescriptions to a dozen different pharmacies nearby. I am so grateful for the people that are like hey I realize my dog seizure medication will be out in one week can I go ahead and get that refill started? I told him why yes you sure can. My next phone call is somebody flipping out my dog her seizure medication runs out today. The thing is we can feel both of those at the same time within the hour but that's because we plan ahead because of clients lack of preparation.

My sister advised me to go to TAMU where she attended and get an orthopedic surgeon to do the surgery. The vet that came in was young and i did ask how many of these surgeries he has performed and his response was quite a few. He must have picked up on my concern and informed me he is older than he looks. I would never ask such a rude question but the patient before me did. My concern was experience since this procedure carries a high failure rate. I made the decision to move forward with him as i understand it is a teaching facility and i couldn’t have been happier with the results!

As far as #2, being a no-show or late to surgery is even worse. Surgery slots are few and scheduled in advance in a GP practice, and there is a lot of prep to be done for a pet before a surgery, from intake to taking vital signs to prepping the pet, and we ask you to bring your pet in early for a reason. If you cannot show up, call us ASAP and let us know. Set reminders for your appointment on your phone, leave yourself alarms and notes, but don't just ghost us.

Ooooh, no check marks for me! (I didn't count on any either, tbh. But we'll see if I make it through the second part unscathed too!) So, question: Where I live, most vets have quite a big no-show fee. I would imagine that that deters most people from bailing on the vets, except the few people who have too much money on their hands...? Is that a thing in the US too? Also, I understand being desperate as the caregiver for an acutely sick or injured pet, I have been there too many times, and the costs, monetary and emotional, are severe and often chocking, but I could never treat another human like we see in the video. No one trying to help you or someone you love deserves to be treated like that.

My cat recently got really really suddenly very ill in the middle of the night. I live in a large city and I had a horrible time finding an emergency hospital to take her to-everyplace was filled to capacity and over and could not take her. Luckily I finally found a place a couple towns over and it was still a very long wait. I don’t think I was rude to staff. But I very well could have been if the situation would have continued.

Totally understandable. I just draw the line at people being overtly mean to staff. Can't have that.

It’s completely normal and acceptable to be stressed and not your best self when all you’re trying to do is get adequate care for your loved one. What’s unacceptable is disrespecting folks who are just trying to help you within the limitations at hand. Not to accuse you of doing such, but as a csr/tech assistant and now manager, I’ve been subjected to insurmountable disrespect from clients to the point where I am actively seeking other work.

Hmm, shall we do one in reverse? I'm always polite, always on time. But I find that vets actually don't like you getting second opinions. They want the money coming to them. They will agree, but I noticed the moment I've done that, they get weird. Well now I feel like I've angered somebody I need in order to help my pet. Many vets also don't like you requesting to send lab work elsewhere. Sometimes they flat-out refuse. I hate the money grab that happens. If I pay you to draw the blood and centrifuge it... then don't I have the right to send it off to a a lab that charges HALF of what I'd pay to go through the vet (who marks it up to get some money off of you) and THEIR chosen lab (who marks it up to get some money off of you)? I love my little girl and I will pay whatever I need to in order to take care of her. But I don't want to be taken advantage of. I guarantee I have less money than the vet has who is trying to get my money. I really don't appreciate the hyper focused business side of vets. I really do feel like it overshadows the caring component more often than not. My vet drives and Audi and lives in a multi-million dollar home. I drive a honda and rent a basement suite. Just saying it seems to be more about money, than the love of animals and pet owners are very aware of this. And don't even get me started on the techs/receptionists. I find them cold and irritated most of the time. I've had a few positive experiences, but for the most part, they seem disgruntled. Maybe that's because some other client was a jerk. But this is your job. You need to set that aside and give the next client a positive experience. Does it ever occur to you, that the attitudes from pet owners might be a reflection of how they're being treated, combined with them being worried and stressed over their pet?

Why do you call people "owners"?...I think the better term is human companion. I think it's important. thanks
