Super interesting for sure, and I wholeheartedly agree on your take. This is a patch, and patches can be absolutely amazing help, but they are not and should never be considered, a solution - we HAVE to look at the actual design flaw and handle that. With all the knowledge and tech we have access to by now, I bet we can solve so much by switching our main focus in what we breed for to Healthy in not just dogs, but all animals. Love your dog - wonderful that he is so spry at 13! Btw, I know your focus is less on cats, but I recently came across some content that said that researchers might just be close to cracking some major longevity and quality of life issues that cats have because of those pesky kidney problems that they get as they age. Fingers crossed! And just to make this comment as long and varied as possible while I care for TWO sick pet rabbits 😬 - I wonder if you've ever performed neurosurgery on rabbits or birds or something of that caliber, where the bones are just absurdly lightweight? I can only imagine it would be an absolute hassle! 😅

@@DVMCellini I hope you get to someday! I know the little eardiots are so fragile in many ways and also low status, so most people would not be able to foot the bill giving all the extra risk and stress to the animal, but I can imagine it would be an awesome and interesting challenge for a surgeon! All the best, and thank you for another interesting video.

There is more information on this on the Skeptvet blog but this was easier to understand. If they gave this drug to puppies of large breed dogs, would they be smaller adults?

Very interested as a vet student and rescue Great Pyrenees parent ❤️ I also think in a perfect world we wouldnt breed for these features (or breed period as much as we do), but since they're out there in the gene pool there will prob always be rescue dogs in need of this kind of tx

This is very interesting topic as I love larger breed dogs. I have 5 over 50 pounds, and three of them are over 10 now. They are my babies. One thing, Molly, my 70+ pounds, 11 years old staffie has been doing very poorly with arthritis. Plus she has lung cancer and mast cell tumors. We started Librela shots, and suddenly she's become three or so years younger. Can you please do a video on Librela?

I had a Newfoundland who lived to 15 years old. He was deaf, but other than that he was healthy. I only put him down as I had to move and had to move to a place with stairs and that wasn’t fair to such an old large dog. I kept him slim his entire life and his blood work was great until the end. I now have a rescue Rottweiler who was overweight and got a tear to her ACL. A TPLO was performed and she is now kept at 5 kg lower than before. Now 2 years along she is active and healthy. I wonder if the problem is lifestyle based more than genetic?

So this drug messes with natural hormones, which means lower bone density, lower muscles mass in the heart and skeletal muscles, brain lobes developing different....all this leads to down steam issues and more needed meds...and side effect could include aggression just like with doggy prozac...

This is intriguing and the drug makes sense but I do agree with you that it would be far, farrr better if we just stopped breeding to such extremes. Natural selection over millions of years made the wolf perfect - why mess with perfection?

I couldn't own a giant dog for this reason. They don't live long enough. My family has a maltese/pomeranian mix right now, but my favorite breed will always be rat terriers and other similar breeds to them. My rat terrier lived to be almost 19, and she had no health problems until about 16 or so. I attribute it to good genetics. I would be interested to know how birds live so long compared to similarly sized mammals. I had a parakeet live to be 9, and he was about the same size as a mouse. I know mice don't live to be 9.

Hello sir. What is your perspective on veterinary suicide being so high? With all this all meat diet and special drugs for dogs , how does that equate with making dogs live longer? Would this be more expense over the life of a dog owner and more stress on veterinarians? Also to the point of this question, did you see Bobi was actually decrowned as a 31 year old dog?

If the drug targets IGF wouldn't it make more sense to base who gets it on the level of IGF in their blood? I know I wouldn't want to give my dog a medication that is only based on their size.

This is really interesting. A mixed dog's genetic diversity also depends on its parent's genetic health. My boxer/lab mix started showing signs of degenerative myelopathy at around eight, up until DM signs started, she was extremely athletic and healthy. In conjunction with new medication protocols, we need to get bad breeding practices under control by educating potential pet owners and breeders regarding OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) testing for both genetic and osteo anomalies caused by long term unethical breeding practices and addressing puppy mill breeding. I bought a Rottweiler puppy, she was the runt and not show quality but her parents, grandparents, great grandparents etc., were all OFA x-rayed and their hips and elbows were good to excellent, Babe lived to a few months past 14 years. I know this is a miniscule sample size, lol, but overall science is on my side. Please do a video dedicated to osteo and genetic testing through the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) or equivalent, and why it's extremely important for potential dog owners to emphatically request to see the certificates and why an ethical breeder won't take issue providing the appropriate documentation. In addition, by using a dog's proper or registered name, a potential buyer or breeder can look up a specific dog on the OFA website to verify its test results. While more and more individuals are becoming educated regarding genetic and osteo testing, there are still so many buyers and breeders either don't know about this, the process or don't understand it's importance.

People get the mix thing “mixed up” no pun intended. While yes mixed breeds are generally healthy. It’s not that “pure breads” are unhealthy. “Pure breads” are created by a mix of out crossing. 2 dogs of the same breed but unrelated. This is how we as humans mate. We mate with another human but not one we’re related to by blood. Line breeding. Cousins, aunts, uncles, half siblings and inbreeding, immediate blood relatives, are how dogs are bred. This is why you have some pure breeds that are healthy. For example very very high end working dog breeding programs. They use inbreeding, line breeding and outcrossing (all in the same breed.) to keep a “pure bred” but keep genetics in a “sweet spot” inbreeding retains genetic traits, line breeding is kind of in the middle and outcrossing is necessarily for new genetics and “fresh blood” when dogs are overly inbred. Problems occur. Most “pure bred” problems aren’t due to being a “pure bred”. It’s because people that don’t know what they’re doing just put dogs together but have done no testing for health and genetic markers, they don’t factor in personality traits of the potential parent dogs at all. For example some dogs carry the DCM gene but don’t actually suffer from it. But the owner doesn’t know this and mates them with another carrier. Then multiple dogs in the following litter will wind up dying from the disease. Pure bred problems? No. Shit breeding problem. You never breed a carrier to a carrier. Same with hip knee and back issue. They also breed dogs with shit personality traits like overly aggressive, or fearful just shit nerves spooky bitch dogs. It’s a mess. It has nothing to do with not being a mut. And everything to do with dog shit breeding. Pun fully intended. Lmao. Hope that helps.

@@thomasmarchese2808 YESSSS ABSOLUTELY!!!!! My boxer/lab mixed breed likely got a DM gene from each parent and at 8 years first showed signs of degenerative myelopathy, so genetic diversity is a hit or miss in mixed breeds. Thank you for breaking that down further. I kept it simple because it was a start to get people thinking about genetic/osteo testing when buying a dog. I've also been recovering from a nasty injury that has made sitting up and typing painful. There's a breeder up in Canada that breeds amazing sport and protection dogs, Haz Othman of Shield K9, he's gone over the points you've made. Ivan Balabanov also produces amazing dogs. Thanks again!

First and foremost much like humans genetics matter. Long time GSD owner here. At least in GSDs longevity is highly inheritable. In 1 generation increased ave life expectancy to ave of 14 yrs simply by asking about AND choosing for longevity. In the 50s it was not unusual for this breed to live 14-16 years and sometimes longer. Today we r told ave is 10-11 years. Part is pressure from the show world where early maturity is rewarded. Slow maturity tends to correspond w longevity and early maturity early death. 50s & 60s a dog shown in an adult class was 5-7 years old. Now that is considered a senior and ave age in these classes is 18-36 months old. Nutrition also plays a role. Dry dog food was not common in 50s 60s. Dogs were fed canned dog food and scraps and things like cooked oatmeal and offal. But at the core is always the genetics. Owned a pituitary dwarf GSD. Book says they die young. TG he didnt read book. He died at 16.5 BUT his sire also lived to a healthy 15! Another factor that plays into the big dog / little dog conundrum is where and how the dog lives. House dog vs kennel vs outside. This tends to correspond w highest to lowest life expectancies. Unfortunately big dogs are often condemed to live as outside dogs. Had a friend who kept her dogs in a highly insulayted but unheated kennel attached to her house. Took impecable care otherwise as far as food, training, exercise but her dogs would all die in that 9-11 range. This was in a state w cold winters. I always felt that they aged faster because of the demand on their bodies of dealing w the cold. Historically toy breeds were the province of the rich and even in ancient times lived the pampered life.

Dogs can't regulate their temperature all that well compared to people, so that makes sense. I really don't like the idea of keeping dogs outside overnight but even more so if they are senior. They should be protected inside. If they are guarding some territory, they can still do that even if they are indoors. At least provide access to an indoor environment, such as with a dog door or similar. Also on the genetics, that's the reason I really like mutts. They are wildcards, but their inbreeding is massively lowered.
@eshea3621
@eshea3621 6 ай бұрын
@@Outworlder actually most purebreds do NOT have a high levdl of inbreeding. Linebreeding yes because that is how you set type and characteristics. Bigger problem is idiots breeding dog who know nothing. The myth about mutts being healthier is just that a myth. Depends on their genetics, how they were raised etc. We had a collie/ golden mutt that we spent more on vet bills than all my Shepherds combined. To start w she was allergic to most food made for man or beast. So just depends on that indiv dog.

Look at nature. What size dogs are "natural"? Few wolves are over 150 pounds. Most (other than wolves) are well under 100 pounds. Same with "feral" dogs. They are 40 - 50 pounds. Dogs are not supposed to weigh 225 pounds, nor 6 pounds.
