Funny! A friend of mine just bought a Martin "back-packer's" guitar. It sounds great...even though it's very small. It would be a good campfire guitar.

Trying to beat the "time clock", my daughter and her daughters are all musicians, but I have been so buy providing and ministering I let others do music. But, I need to have some talent to play the "harp" some day. Thanks for sharing you talent and blessings. Old Navy John

When I was a kid my guitar playing brother had just led us through the Beatles White Album, side one, in a sibling sing along one night around a Red River New Mexico campfire. We had taken a break when, from up canyon, we heard a lone voice echo through the forest "play the flip side!!!!"

First off I'd like to say thank you for your dedication to helping ALL people learn guitar and not assuming that some things should come natural. I'd love to see some REALLY basic music theory videos. I've learned to finger pick some simple tunes from tabs, and I've learned some chords and strum patterns, but I don't really understand the fundamentals of how a song is built and how to put the pieces together into something that makes sense musically. My mind works very mechanically, and fine arts don't really come easily to me, but I have set out to learn guitar, stepping completely outside of my comfort zone, as a matter of personal growth.

Without making it complicated, what can the (2nd) guitar player play, when someone else is carrying the main chord progression. For example, the basic chord progression is a G, Em, C, D, ... What could the 2nd guitar add without copying (and cluttering) the full chords? Like a simple (single string) bass line, or would I try a G, Em, C, D, an octave higher on the fret board? I find playing the same (full) chords as the (1st) guitar player really adds nothing but volume and sometimes clutter. Where could I throw in a few little lead licks to add fullness? Thanks for all the time you put into helping us along here.

Thank you so very much for your videos, very helpful. I use too play when I was younger, then I had 2 devastating strokes and I had to relearn just about everything in life. I was not very good at that time playing guitar. I was 42 , I am 61 now, I have been playing again for about 15 years and it was like something in my brain woke up I was able to do things I never knew how to do, like read music! Anyways, the lord Jesus blessed me indeed. I am still learning new things I could never do before, I am truly blessed and thankful for videos like yours that teach me every day! Thank you so very much, I am a better player than ever before and still learning! To those out there having problems with playing guitar, don’t quit keep praying and watching videos like this video here. GOD BLESS all

This is me exactly. I'm 43, had my Johnson for 15 years but got overwhelmed the first year or so I had it and just recently started back. I love youtube and have come so far in just a little bit of time. I got my 9 chords down pretty good and know I'll never have the time to devote to becoming a lead guitarist but I love to play the songs that I love, at least where I can hear them. Thanks for all you and everyone else teaching on youtube do. You have no idea the difference it makes.

This is a video that I wish I would have seen when I started playing guitar back in the 70's. I just recently picked up the guitar again recently (now 62) and having the basics down instead of getting into theory and all that stuff just starting looking for songs I know and love to listen to. Wow, what a difference it has made in the enjoyment of playing. I literally played blisters on my fingers. I do plan on taking the guitar on our next camping trip with the family and having sing alongs by the campfire. Great advice in this video. Thanks for getting the word out there.

Still binging on your videos at 4 in the morning! I have a younger brother who loves to play guitar, BUT...he has terrible rhythm...bless his heart. It drives me nuts. He also has a hard time singing a harmony part. We used to sing and play together and he always jumped onto MY singing part. I would switch parts with him...and he STILL jumped onto my part. He plays much better than I do, but his sense of rhythm...ugh. This video was VERY helpful...thanks so much!

I have been playing bass (mainly blues) for quite a while but I utterly love 50s / 60s folk songs. I was (when I can afford it) going to buy an electric guitar, but having seen this video I think I really need an acoustic guitar. I know all of those chords, and I know a few folk songs from a time when I played tenor ukulele, I do have a basic repetoire. Thank you for inspiring me as to my next direction (I am 74)....

I also would suggest once you have some of these techniques down is to find a pickers circle in your area. We have one every Sunday night at a local pub and my repertoire has expanded 10 fold since playing along with that group. If there isn't a pickers circle near you maybe start one up. Our picker circle consists of 20 - 30 people depending on who shows up. Instruments range from piccolo, 6 string and 12 string guitars, fiddles, cajones, harmonicas, tub bass, mandolins, ukes and the occassional auto harp.

Great video! Just a word for those who could not keep them selves from commenting on the use of addressing all of us as “friends “... you know, I caught that too, at first, and was wondering about it, but the guy has so many redeeming qualities with what he is giving out for free and it is so-oo right on, sage advice that I can tell you from years of experience on the guitar that I’m definitely going to utilize this as a resource and I’m going to overlook a slightly partial annoyance with what he has chosen to address his audience /so with respect, I accept it and I’m going to move past it so I can get the Gold of what he is offering! Peace! (You know I’ve been called a lot worse than “friend “just don’t call me late for dinner)

I have a tendency to use the same strumming pattern on everything--but I'm working on it. This helps . I have an Ibanez AC240 parlor guitar for camping and travel, and a Martin D-15 and Taylor 12 string when I am playing with the 2 groups I am in--they get together once a month each--those are great. Most importantly, they are non-judgemental. I have a few "go-to" songs--but learning the "signature Licks" makes it all better. Interestingly, at Chaco Canyon in NE New Mexico last summer, a group of us were playing (all strangers-met that day), and I started the intro to Ian Tyson's "Summer Wages". A voice from out of the darkness hollered "Are you Canadian, too?"--and we added a 6th to the 5 guys playing...

Very interesting video! Thank you! My favorite guitar playing is by the campfire. You can make small mistakes and maybe not know all the words. As long as you are entertaining and people are singing and have a good time, no body really cares. My memory is bad. I try to sing and play one song all the way through, 3 times a week. Everytime it is a different song. Eventually the song becomes muscle memory. That to me is a song you can play without thinking about it.Also I have found, if you pretend to not remember some words, someone in the crowd will start singing them. That's a way to get people singing with you.

Good video and good advice. One thing I tell people who want to start playing is to get music books of the style they like. When you know how a song goes and have the lyrics and chords right in front of you it makes it easier and more rewarding. Find some people to play with, but be aware a lot of people who are good players think they can teach. They might be able to show you their style but that's as far as it goes. Every song you've ever heard has music available on the internet, Google it up and go with it. A quality guitar makes it easier and more enjoyable. But nothing anyone tells you means doodley if you don't PRACTICE- Practice- Practice!!!!!!

Sweet! I've been trying to learn guitar for the past couple of years (in my 50's), the last year has been with a teacher. While I practice daily my progress is glacial. I've noticed many songs go beyond the basic chords so it might be helpful to cover how to convert the sheet music (i.e. tabs) to see if you really need that F7 to play the song or if you can just sub in something that sounds pretty close and the group can sing along to. Thanks!

15:09 Nothing Else Matters. This is legitimately what made me want to look up how to play the song, because I was mucking around with fingerpicking while my fretting hand was busy with other things, i.e. turning pages, looking up songs, etc.

Wow! What a great teacher. I just started at the age of 52 but I'm catching on. I've been watching Party Marty on KZbin and have learned a lot. I have a full size Johnson and an acoustic electric Ibanez. Love them both. I can play about 10 songs so far and everyone loves to sing along which is always a good time. I just subscribed to your channel hoping to learn something different. Happing strumming!

James Carter ... Haha 😆.. Hey James I don’t normally respond to replies unless the person is replying something positive, or uplifting. I am on u-tube quite often and you are the first person I have seen make a drinking game out of a persons videos.. The weirdest thing about it is that your name is James.. My best friend and roommate passed away not quite 3weeks ago and I never made it through a entire day without laughing my ass off over his comments and crazy 😜 ideas.. Thank you James I needed a good laugh 😂

Lindsay Lewis I must not be really listening to him that well cause I haven’t heard it yet HAHAHAHA OHHH HAHA Wait scratch that. While I was replying to your comment I heard it 4x’s.. Good thing I don’t drink 🍹 anymore or I think I would be pretty tipsy 🥴 right now.. It is so great to see people having fun with a persons videos instead of posting nasty negative comments.. To this day I can’t wrap my head around the idea that people feel good about themselves knowing that they just stripped a little bit of self esteem from that person. Sorry for babbling on and on..

Hi Eric, you covered this in another lesson but I think you'll agree that one caveat is if you are an electric player and you want to play campfire guitar (and in your words, "not have it sound like poopoo") you'll need to play power chords, barre chords or/and triads rather than full opens chords (which can sound a bit weird through electric guitar even with a portable practice amp volume)

Great information and great instruction! I struggle with strumming patterns. I might not be the only one! LOL! I can play your "5 Strumming Patterns" up to 120bpm, but try and put it in a song and I flounder! More on musicality in all regards!
