I’d say that the Audi A2 could be included here too. It was incredibly lightweight due to a space-frame aluminium chassis, very aerodynamic for its time, with a coefficient of drag of 0.25, this and a total weight of around 900kg in certain trims meant it was extremely efficient. Unfortunately, the innovations ramped up the cost, so it didn’t sell well, but had it come out 10 years later with the styling to go with that time period I think it could’ve sold incredibly well, especially given the currently trends towards efficiency and the environment, could even have worked as a hybrid or EV. Proud to be an A2 owner.
@TopCarsTV Жыл бұрын
I like the A2. It's a clever car in small packaging, and I think it looks rather interesting.
@I_Ciste Жыл бұрын
I would also add the Ssangyong Actyon, which is the first SUV-Coupe ever. It was born in 2006, and it died for poor sales after only 4 years, which is only 2 years after the X6 was born. I do believe that the reasons are the fact that the Actyon was ugly and with a brand that doesn't ring many bells in the majority of consumers outside of South Korea.
@Codatronic Жыл бұрын
@@TopCarsTV Agree, considering how small it is, it really utilises the space well, and since the rear seats fold flat it can even carry longer items. The styling is certainly interesting, it’s as if someone has stretched a 1st gen Audi TT, I don’t dislike it since it’s plenty quirky, but I think it could certainly be improved today.

8:55 The NSU Ro 80. My grandpa bought this car in 1970 and never sold it, even when he replaced it. My dad sold it just last year. It had a rotary engine and an electronically engaging clutch. Basically you would put your hand on the shifter or you would hit the brakes and it would engage. It also was really aerodynamic, and it looks like a car from the 80's, despite it being from the 70's. It was really quiet (unless it had a broken exaust like ours did), it looked good and the suspension was really comfy, but that's the only good things it had. The engine was unreliable and burned through fuel and oil like crazy (average rotary experience), the electric motor that actioned the clutch had a habit of getting stuck (you would have to manually unstuck it by putting your hand in the engine bay) and it had serious electronical and built quality issues. Here's a list of all the problems ours had: - Fuel indicator not working - Clutch getting stuck - Gearbox not going in gear (not related to the clutch) - Hole in the exaust pipe (it sounded like a modded RX-7) - Radio antenna not working - Radio not turning on (not even static, nothing) - Water leaking through doors - Clutch not engaging when braking, resulting in car pushing through the brakes and not stopping - Engine blew up and had to be replaced (in the 70's), and my grandpa was with the family 1000km from home - 3 batteries were drained trying to get the car to start Basically every time you started it, it would have some new problem as well as all the other ones. It was so unreliable that there was a saying: just like bikers greet each other, even Ro 80 owners greeted each other... by hand signalling the number of times their engine exploded. It's really a shame that it had so many problems, because it was really ahead of it's time.

1:48 Wrong. The first streamlined production car was the Rumpler Tropfenwagen with a drag coefficient of 0.28 made from 1921 until 1925. That was beaten 1934 by the Tatra 77 with a drag coefficient of 0.2455. This reached 87mph with only 60hp.
@MonsterHobbiesModelCarGarage Жыл бұрын
Glad you mentioned the Airflow. Sadly, when the car was pulled from the market, the rest of the auto industry caught up with the streamlining. The AMC Eagle 4WD was really just a standard AMC Eagle with 4WD components. American Motors at the time suffered from low sales overall, so trying to keep the cost of cars low resulted in using the same components across all their vehicles. Therefore all the 4WD parts came from their larger Jeep vehicles. You have to give AMC credit for their resourcefullness.
@HOLDEN1856 Жыл бұрын
You could say the Holden Crewman (and its HSV counterpart, the Avalanche XUV) although it depends since there are no other vehicles like it. The Crewman main competitor would be utes like the HiLux, plus only the Cross8 variant had 4WD. The Holden Adventra (and HSV Avalanche SUV) would be like the AMC Eagle but for Australia, so might not be worth mentioning.

I'm not sure the Airflow failed because of its design. If you look closely the car wasn't ready. They had difficulties to assembly it so it was longer and cost more and... wasn't reliable. In the same time the Lincoln Zephyr which looks exactly the same and was more expensive sold better. Even the DeSoto Airflow (a 6 cyl. shorter version) launched later went savage: it has been sold in one year merely as much as the Chrysler in 4! BTW THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR INTRODUCING THE MEGA TRACK!!! I've seen on IRL in the 90's, that's probably my absolute dream car because it's worst unuseful than any other car!

I think this video is about production car failures. The Chrysler Turbine never made it to market because of the cost involved to build those turbine engines and re-tooling the factory to do so. Also, I think their fuel economy wasn't much better than the standard carburated V8 at the time.
@peteinwisconsin2496 Жыл бұрын
Turbine engines are only efficient when operated at 100% power-- which seldom happens in a passenger vehicle. For comparison, a jet aircraft uses nearly the same pounds per hour of fuel taxiing as it does at altitude, when it is going 540 MPH.

I wanna say hydrogen cars in general. The tech came out way too early, people feared it, it was not polished and it now has a bad rep because businessmen were in a hurry. They're faster than electric cars, have a way bigger range than, both, combustion and electric cars (about 600 miles in one tank) and they'd fill up in mere seconds... Imagine a hybrid car that used electric/hydrogen engines. That would have been...monstrous.

EV-1 was not a flop. It was as successful as GM wanted it to be. The XJ-220 was a flop, but it had less to do with when it was launched and more to do with under-delivering on expectations.
