Sitting on a friends porch this morning in another state. Watching your video this morning has been quite soothing to me, and I thank you! I lost my 39 year old daughter a few days ago, passed in her sleep, and hearing your voice and watching this video has brought me a little peace. Her favorite colors were pink and purple, how fitting. I know the you and your family are praying people and I only ask for your prayers as we lay my sweet Sharee’ to rest this week. Thank you Laura and Aron for your love that you continue to share. Love, Anne Andrews 💕💜

Prayers for you and all your daughter's loved ones. We lost our 33 year old son to Glioblastoma Multiforme, a rare, fatal brain cancer, in early February. He has a two year old daughter, a wife, and two stepdaughters that considered him their Dad. I know your pain. I've watched Garden Answer for years. I think I'm addicted to it. Lol. Laura and Aaron are just such genuine people. They make you a part of their family and they take you away from your problems for just a bit. They are a blessing from God. I pray you find peace and comfort in your life. ❤

Hi Laura, I’m just always in awe with how full of knowledge you are. As someone who found your channel 4 years ago randomly, your daily videos had me hooked and have introduced me to a passion I didn’t know existed. I’ve grown lavender for many years in different areas of the US. My favorite thing to do with some of the spent blooms is to crumble them on the floor and vacuum them up. You will have a lavender scented vacuum bag that will perfume the area whenever you vacuum. It even adds a calming effect to running the vacuum cleaner. 😂

I'm in Southern Maryland zone 7a Mid-Atlantic and we have hot humid summers with above average rainfall. I've had good luck growing 'Phenomenal' lavender in raised beds. I was able to concoct a suitable soil mixture to make the plants happy. I also just created a new herb parterre garden where I planted up 'Vera' English lavender IN-GROUND and it seems to be doing happy. I made sure the bed was on a significant incline to facilitate enough drainage. Hope this helps someone. Thanks Laura for all you do!!

Hi! I live in a super humid region and what we do for success is creating a good drainage for the lavender plant. Raise beds or it's recomended to make a kind of little hill with the soil so water don't stay near the lavender. I never water them, only at summer a little bit.

I took the leap and purchased 3 different lavenders this spring to see how they would perform at my new home of some random varieties that looked beautiful. When naming the common varieties you have grown I was SO surprised to see my 2 English types being the first you mentioned! Laura, I don't believe you've ever mentioned your favorite fragrance from the garden, but with this video I think I've guessed it. The video footage of you & your mom in those lavender fields is timeless. Makes me want to go back & re-watch the original. I ripped out a few of my grandmothers 15 year old lavenders, they had huge woody bases. I replaced them with seedlings that I had grown this year. This video was so very helpful!! I was just telling my husband that I'd love to plant a huge drift of the Sweet Romance Lavender in front of our new patio! The timing was perfect for this video for so many reasons other than my own I'm sure! I used to think of Lavender as a Spring plant but have recently thought more of it as a mid/late Summer thing. Do you know if lavender is toxic to any animals (dogs, cats?) I know there are so many comments that it's hard to read each and every one, but I hope you know how much of an influence you have on so many gardeners on so many levels! I have planted things I had never heard of and tried several techniques since I started watching your channel nearly 5 years ago! I originally found Garden Answer looking for fairy garden ideas. Now I feel as though I have found a true mentor (besides my husband) that inspires me and thousands of gardeners worldwide! Never stop!! Blessings to you and your family!

I’m in central Indiana and have my original 6 Munstead plants in the same location for over 30 years. They have survived weather from blizzards to 100 degree days with 75% humidity. Every spring I’m so excited when I see them green up for another year. I’ve never done anything to them except heavily mulch with leaves for the winter and cut them back in the spring. I don’t know if that’s best but it works so I don’t over think it. Thanks for this video. It’s very timely since I just put in a fence and want to start a new border.

I live in zone 9a-Houston, TX. Tried Sweet Romance Lavender in a container, but it died. I have limited space in our yard since we put in a swimming pool. And we have existing sprinkler systems everywhere so I thought a container would be best since they like it on the dry side. I might have to plant some along the driveway which is the only place without sprinklers. I’ll keep you posted on the progress. That’s what I love about watching your show because you give me the inspiration to keep trying and practicing. 🌻❤️ Thank you for shining your knowledge and kindness in this world! I’m in zone 4b. I am exclusively growing Hidcote Lavender grown from seed.., as it seems to be the only lavender I can get to preform year after year with little to no, winter protection. Snow gets three-four foot deep for months and months on end here. But this variety comes back every year, bigger, stronger and even fuller than the last. I absolutely love the scent. I will dry bunches just to hang around the house and add to arrangements for the scent as I go by. I am beginning to look into extracting oils, as I’ve been adding to the hoard. Added another 50 plants this year.

I live in the deep south and I’ve tried for many years to grow lavender. I’ve tried raised beds, containers and straight in the ground and never have had any success. The only places I’ve ever seen them for sale in my area were in big box stores like Lowes… probably not the right type for our area. Never see them in local nurseries either 🤔 I guess most varieties just really struggle in our extreme humidity and rain. Thank you for such an informative video! Hi Tonya! Im in SC so I understand your struggles 😂 and yes our azaleas are way easier to manage! I wanted to suggest something, I see in our landscapes here often times they'll use Russian Sage, and they do surprisingly well. I guess as long as the soil is well draining and it's in full sun, Russian Sage may be a good substitute to try instead of lavender.

Good day my favorite KZbin Gardeners! I'm in Illinois Zone 5b; one year in to gardening. After watching your "Lavender Basics" video, I have decided to purchase either Munstead for part shade or Aromatic Blue Imp Lavender for their size. I really appreciate the detailed information that you provide on planets, and would like to see more videos like this one. Thanks for the education! ps, I love your Sweet Romance Lavender hedging!

Thank you so much for this video. I have always wondered what the difference was between the varieties. This is very helpful and now I know which ones I want to get to replace a large over grown one that was removed last year.

This was so helpful. I love lavender and it grows so well in my sandy soil. One thing to add, this might not be for everyone, but you can use lavender in cooking. Not all lavender varieties, though. Generally just the English varieties. But it would be interesting to see a video comparing the culinary aspects of different English lavenders. I have made lavender shortbread and lavender pots de crème, and as long as you don’t use too much, it adds such a delicious flavor. And I know a lot of people love using lavender syrup in lattes and cappuccinos. ☕️

Yes! It's wonderful! I use a lavender-infused spaghetti sauce whenever serving a cheese-filled pasta, such as manicotti or involtini. Recently, I found a lavender paste that I'm going to try in a cake frosting. Of course, lavender is one of the herbs in Herbs de Provence, which is lovely to use for roasts and chops. I probably use it more in the kitchen than anywhere else. Glad you mentioned this. ~ Lisa
