Not finishing has been an epic struggle. We love our songs so much, we want them to be perfect. I finally had to put a date on my most recent project. I used an indie music site's deadline for an annual award to finish my tracks this year. One great thing about that was it forced me to commit. After submitting, I listen to the mixes and there are things I would like better for sure, but what a great relief to be able to let it be at that point. It seems like toward the end of a project like that we tend to split hairs and not really accomplish any significant progress for the amount of time we put in. - Anyhow, this has been another great video, you bring a wealth of wisdom, Warren, thank you so much for making these!!

Warren, I've been going through your videos and, while they're all fantastic, this one is probably the one that I have found most valuable. These 7 things are immensely important for people who have been at it for a while. You forget to look out for these. I really appreciate all the effort you put into making these videos. There is a lot of random advice from people who don't know what they're talking about on KZbin, but it is refreshing to see such amazing, honest advice from a professional.

Thanks so much for teaching us who are still learning. I can't tell you how many times I've referenced these videos. And the fact that your so accessible to ask questions to is just icing on the cake. Again if you could ever interview Peter Katis and do a studio rundown of his place I would die happy but with or without it (hopefully with it ;) haha) I love your channel and will be watching every episode. Thank you Warren for another great video. I've been recording for a long time (34 years) and every one of your points hit home as absolute truth. There are thousands of videos out there about the nuts and bolts of recording....the how to and the mechanics, but there are very few videos that discuss the psychology and mindset for success. It's so great to know that a guy like you is susceptible to the same mistakes we all make ....so to me this list is a very valuable affirmation on what the really important things in this craft are. Again, thank you!

+Produce Like A Pro Warren, what are your thoughts on gut instincts and initial impressions? I have often found that after working on a mix for some time and then going back and listening to a quick and dirty rough mix I did, the rough mix is just better. It's typically got more punch and balls, more attitude and more excitement. The "good" mix I had been working on often sounds too polite....too milquetoast. Maybe it is similar to your "being a perfectionist" point....but do you have any advice or tips to keep from falling into that trap? Thanks, Freddy.

Finish it!" THANK YOU, Warren!

Brilliant Warren. The Phychology of music production. The letting go. I have so much stuff that I have not let go because I don't think its good enough. Everything else you said rings a bell also. One experience to share: on the pint of Double micing/ over-micing, many bedroom guitarists who record (myself included) will use amp sims, many of which (Amplitude being a good example) with automatically set each amp up with an sm57 model and another condenser, in stereo, with room mics also automatically added. After watching this I went back through my old mixes and looked at my plug ins, got rid of most of the room mics and stuck to a "1 mic per amp" policy, using reverb in my guitar bus to give the illusion of a single room. It's instantly cleared up my mixes, especially with gainy, driven parts and made the whole thing much easier to keep at a consistent volume throughout a track! So cheers Warren! One thing I'd love to see you talk about is using Drum samples, I know you'd have no problem finding a room to record drums in, but for most bedroom producers we're limited to a sample plugin like EZDrummer, Addictive Drums, or Stephen Slate Drums etc. Which often sound false (especially with a beginner), yet I've heard many examples of midi drums that sound wonderfully 'live'. I'm not expecting a reply in comment form (unless there's one particular thing you can think of) but perhaps a topic for a later video? Many Thanks for the comprehensive wisdom, Oscar

+Produce Like A Pro hi warren, I've just noticed my previous question was cut off, many of use use drum samples like bfd and ex drummer, which can often sound "false" if you had one tip for making them sound more "live" what would it be? Many thanks!

It's really great to hear from you advices like that. I've been producing my own record for some months and it is very, very difficult to focus on creativity when you are the artist, the producer, the engineer and the mixer. I try to commit more and more on each step and sometimes I have to go back and rethink something, but I also think that's the way. Thak you very much for this and hope I can send you one copy of the album as soon as it's finished.

Hey Warren! Thanks for yet another very instructive video. It's just many of the mistakes that I have made through many of my mix. I have made too many recordings of guitar with amplifier and microphone...but without pedals and effects that go directly into the mix. There are probably many who have good experience to get a perfect sound of their guitar recordings by simply using a microphone in front of their guitar amplifier. But as you say, there is nothing that is right or wrong! My new guitar recordings sound much more professional..now after I started to use my pedal board...where I then add a little compression and possibly a little delay.I record it all through my M-57 located in front of guitar cabinet. My guitar tracks sound so good now that I therefore do not have to use as many plugins.Have a marvelous time recording!

I definitely relate to not finishing. I listen back to old pro tools sessions where I gave up because my guitar was too pop , or my string session was to sad. Great video Warren. I have really learned about the whole "commit" idea. The idea of spending time to make a clear decision on say a guitar tone and sticking with it. Rather that a load of DI' s and using an amp simulator (there is nothing wrong with amp sims, they rock). Loved this video Warren.

Hi Warren. Your videos, like many NEEDED messages in life, seem to come at just the right moments. First. I have been struggling with commitment lately. I record mostly in the box (midi strings and midi drums). Those little midi devils are contently tapping me on the brain and wanting to be micro edited etc... I finally decided to print them to audio. I was terrified. Now I'm pissed that I waited so long. Second... When I first discovered Garageband 10 years ago I jumped in feet first and just made music, technically bad but the feel was outrageous. The more I fixated on learning the perfect ratio for this or eq setting for that. My mixes sucked. I have finally gotten back to my original spirit while applying the knowledge I have culled from wonderful teachers such as yourself. Thank you for bringing to light the importance of "Commitment" and the pitfalls of perfectionism. world can save you from yourself :) "The pursuit of perfection leads to madness" Peace Chris Sahlin

Hi Warren and thank you for having one of the best recording educational channels out here. I must admit I have made all 7 (and more) mistakes. I have a question about recording upright piano. I am thinking of the piano in Monkberry moon delight which is one of my all time favorites...piano sound and otherwise. I use a Zoom recorder in stereo at 24 bit and have tried placing on the top, bottom, sides, back of the piano with top opened, closed, bottom panel open, closed, and at different distances and cannot get a good piano sound. I know there is a great dynamic range of the piano so should it be compressed somewhat before recording or after? Is there a tried and true micing technique I should use? Thanks in advance for your reply. Best, Steve.

In the process of recording a friend for his solo album. Some of these bullet points you mentioned I realized during my own solo albums, but some are relevant to things I'm doing wrong currently. I realized literally about 2 days ago that I was going too crazy with the double mic stuff. It worked OK with a guitar using two SM 57's (one in front, one in back of the amp). I took that as a green light to go overboard, and then I was recording bass with a mic in front and a DI from the bass head at the same time. I found that the DI wasn't adding much to help the sound, but it was giving me way more things to micromanage (phase issues, EQ, blending, etc) with little benefit. So I think I'm going to commit more to one sound I really like, as opposed to just going multi-mic on everything, like I'm casting some magic net that will get me what I need. Thanks as always, Warren. In doing this current project, your videos have been a massive help.

Hi +SLoMo4 Great comment! Yes I love the front and back SM57 on guitars blended to one input! Thanks Warren. Regarding clipping: when recording vocals particularly, I'll record the singer when they're warming up to get a level but then pull back the gain by 3-6db knowing that when they get into the track they will be belting it harder. I also have them practice over a chorus (or what I consider to be the loudest part of the song).

Really great list. Especially about mental blocks. I went through that and still need to force myself overcoming it all the time. This is probably the hardest thing to do. Wow, there's so much humility in this video, I loved it, it's great to hear! Because I do think staying always humble is one absolute key to keep progressing, there is so much stuff out there from people that "know"... and end up just being stuck on that one place from where they can't move anymore, being so sure about themselves^^ If humility is the trademark of the great, you're definitely great! Thanx so much, as always :-)

Warren, this is great stuff. Really love all your videos. Regarding to the Committing to Sound, I can totally relate. Some of my recordings done on 4 and 8 tracks waaaay back 20+ years ago had a certain sound and vibe due to the inherent lack of equipment. On one home demo ballad I played an electric guitar through a Rockman on clean with chorus. For vocals I ran it through a Boss DD2 digital pedal because I lacked outboard gear. This song is still pretty darn good, and would actually be difficult to reproduce in a DAW because of the sonic qualities. Anyway, I hope new musicians take your lessons to heart. Your videos - had they been around 25-30 years ago - would have saved me a lot of grief.

Hi warren... I have a confession... I have played guitar for 20+ years, and every time I been on stage or in a studio, I tried to discover what the engineers where doing - and I thought I knew about it. But.... Now I started to record and mix a little myself, my band, and sometimes just myself here in home with an acoustic - AND SHIT I WAS LOST!!!!!!!!!!! I have seen almost any of your videos now, many of them over and over again - and you are the master! Without these tuts filled up with advices, tips and tricks - I would have given up long time ago... Thanks a lot man.. BTW - I dont care if you got a new haircut, you are still my sound.god :-P Take care and have a good sunday Cheers Michael from Denmark

Very motivational video. I thought your points on the quality of the recordings of the classic zeppelin, beatles albums were spot on. Committing to the sound is essential. They avoided the massive overproduction you hear from a large majority of crappy modern recordings by making it real and in the moment. To this day, there isnt much that can compare to those classic 70's recordings..

Just started my bands recording and tried to use all the advise you have given including mic placement. Seemed like it helped a lot. We used a set of Cad mics on the drums with a 57 on the snare. Also used an AT2035 for a room mic. The CAD's are okay and I usually use a D6 on the kick but for some reason it wasn't working. I'm not sure if its broke or not?? My drummer has a 1994 custom made TAMA Art Star with birds eye maple. Sounds huge !! Would love to get it in a real studio drum room one of these days ! Started guitar last night using a Mesa Dual Rectifier and a 57 running straight into my Audient id14. Did 4 separate rhythm tracks with two different guitars with all different settings. Sounds huge so far. I also used a Line 6 guitar plugin for an additional 4 tracks. I like using the plugin with the real guitar tone and blending them. I don't think it can get any bigger than that. For the bass I went from my Sub bass direct into the Audient. Sounds okay but not super happy with it. Thanks for all you do for us rookies...it helps a lot.

Seems like there are a lot of rookie/students watching. Warren, how about a 10 most used mixing tricks... like the vocal thickening trick... for example, the Pul-Tec bass trick, the boost cut thing for kicks and basses, etc. I've realized it has taken me a long time to learn some things that most folks know. It might be helpful to have a sort of one-stop shop for the most common tips/tricks that are used as a sort of counter to the common mistakes.

Thanks for talking about perfectionism. I am way too guilty on this issue and what's worse, I can't get myself to stop. My problem is not so much with the recordings, but more so with the mixing and editing. The reason might be that I am still very inexperienced in what I do.I am still learning by doing regarding mixing. And as time passes, my expectations keep rising. In the beginning I just wanted to very sloppily record my ideas. Then I wanted it to sound decent. Then I wanted to record a small demo EP that I could publish somewhere. And now I want to sound like the pros and spend way to much time tweaking my sound. I hate that, but I can't switch it off.

Thank you for the great advices, Warren! I think number 7 is the easiest to fix... with a thing called the "mute button" :) That's maybe a good additional tip... you don't need to use everything you recorded for the final mix. One (I am sure very common) mistake I would like to add to the list: 8 - Don't wait for inspiration to start recording. Just start doing it, and the inspiration will come (not always, but more often than not). I think this can be applied to many more things in life... don't wait for the right moment to do something, because you might end up waiting forever and not get it done at all. This is also related to your fifth point, "never finishing". Talking about finishing, what happened to the "How to Record" series? I thought there would be 20 episodes, but it finished at episode 16. Just applying some soft pressure here.... hahahaha. Many thanks, David
@Producelikeapro

Hi +David Mood Great comment! Haha yes more coming in the How To series, we got off on more popular topics! Got to give the audience what they want! haha I think if you keep your focus and commit you won't have to spend hours auditioning and listening to extra parts that you might have to mute! That's a huge part of the commit! Without committing parts you end up with an enormous amount of things that might not work together, that's the 'fix it in the mix' mentality that I try to avoid! Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

+Produce Like A Pro Thanks, great to know! Yes, I also try to commit more and more at an earlier stage. I bought a high-quality channel strip (SPL Frontliner), so I can record with compression and EQ already on the way in. It has independent outputs after all processors, which let's you record the signal with all the processing, and also the pure signal after the preamp at the same time. Kinda like recording an amp and a DI together. This is a nice safety net until one is really familiar with the unit... you know that you always have the pure signal should you mess something up. I'm sure after a while one doesn't need that anymore, but it's nice to have. Many thanks, David
