Great Video Warren! As always I really appreciate your approach for those of us that are mixing with less than thousands of dollars in equipment. You touched on recording others like your friends for free for the practice. This really rings true to me as the more you mix the better you are bound to get(assuming your paying attention to what you are doing). Especially for me when I started recording other types of music than my normal because suddenly I am forced to figure out the best way to record a stand up bass or shuffling brushes on a snare, and a myriad of other issues that I had never faced recording my Reggae band. And mixing other styles of music present its own challenges as well as suddenly the bass is way to present for this type of music where that would be my go-to for Reggae. Love tip #5 about avoiding the Dogma. Nothing new and interesting was ever come up with while doing the status quo. I am sure someone would have given Glyn Johns a hard time about how he was setting up the mics to record drums, cause it wasn't the standard way of doing it. But if it sounds good who cares.It becomes it's own standard if it works. STP singing Dead and Bloated intro into guitar pickups to get that edgy rough sound on the vocals. You don't have to re-invent the wheel every time, but you don't have to do it the standard way either, just cause someone says that is the way its done. Anyways, thanks so much for the videos, keep em coming, I think I have watched every one so far and am a better mixer for it.

ALL GREAT ADVICE! I'm producing an artist here Japan in for free because I believe in him as he is extremely talented, and doing so, will get my name out. I rely on my my Equator Audio D5s, Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pros and my Mixcubes for my mixes. Then, listen on everything I possibly can: crappy external computer speakers; lap-top speakers, stereo systems; buds, iPods, iPhones; smart phones; Hi-Fi headphones; I even go to my nearest pro audio shop and plug in to as monitors there as I can get away with. Anything! The harsher the criticism the better you will become. (of course it has to be form someone who has a clue.) Joe Meek: "If it sounds right, it is right." Ken Scott (?): "There are no rules in music." Thanks again Warren!

You are right in your other videos about transformers. I added some Jensens to a preamp and now I can get a proper snare sound with SM57s. I also discovered putting acoustic foam behind tom legs or in the corners between the wall and floor behind the set gets rid of short reflections getting into the overheads. Makes it easier to make a room sound bigger with reverbs, chambers, or whatever.

Once again very well explained, I use reference tracks as I find these so important in nestling my tracks along side the mixes of the pro's. One trick I learned from this ,as you mentioned the high end control these days is matching vocal sibilance with cymbals and other highs. For me this seems to keep the top frequencies uniform. Of late I have been mixing quite a few heavy rock songs and the like. I listen to a lot of jazz and "NOT" rock to keep m,y ears fresh. My 6 song CD/Drive consists of: 1) Queensryche - Empire 2) Doobie Brothers - Long Train Running 3) Chicago - Make Me Smile 4) Judas Priest - Pain Killer (I used to use this to dial in the low/low mids in a live PA) 5) Stan Kenton - Artistry In Rhythm(one of the greatest Piano sounds ever IMHO) 6) Stevie Nicks - Landslide. Thoughts?

#6 Practice your performance before you start recording... To me this is the obvious, but it is super true in the real world! I've wasted time in my home studio and in the real studio with something that should be done within an hour and it took a couple of hours. That's time and money in the end that could have been saved for mixing or getting those plugins set in right or thinking about the next steps. Definitely a pet peeve of mine!

just used my first ref track. Believe it or not I used "Over the Mountain" by ozzy. It was actually surprising how radical some of the EQing was compared to what I was used to doing. As you said Warren, there is a lot of top end energy in these rock tracks!

i love the 7th one i always do this ,it can realy help. most people are afraid to listen other genre of music some others are doing this and just copy from various tracks ,that is what i don´t like.the free stuff i always do is, when i start a fresh session appart of template i always design my sounds from scratch that help my tracks not to sound the same i know this is not a topic, but when you listen to songs from cataloge from other producer you will get bored quikly

Mixing tips from a fan ; 1: Use your speakers as a 'distortion' unit , use foil , plastic wrap , man I even used ball bearings (speaker pointing upwards) , whatever .... mic it (quite close works best) , and layer it under / between the original track , also using fx , especially very short delays (modulation) for instance for more 'pop' really is a treat for these types of re-mic-ed tracks ....Plus you will have sounds NO ONE has ;) 2 : Place (any type you want ) 2 speakers with the drivers towards each other (sandwich) , phase reverse one of the speakers , now lay mic on the ground between the speakers .... use distance between speakers to taste . This will give you a layer track that gives an impression of 'floating over your head' sound , reverb it for some fun in space ;)

It's very easy , when you reverse phase one channel of a stereo file , you lose the centre of the sound , that's what I wanted to record ;)

Warren. I love the videos and thank you very much, but I have a question on ear training. I understand the point about reference tracks, but I find myself listening to parts and comparing them to similar parts in other songs. An example might be song where the bass part is driving the song forward so I would compare that Hollywood Nights by Bob Seger. Is this a good thing to do? Just generally using it to help guide where it sits in the mix? Can it be taken too far? I hope I got my question across and would love to hear your thoughts, but either way I wish you and yours, plus the whole produce like a pro community a happy holiday season and a wonderful new year!
@Producelikeapro9 жыл бұрын
Hi +Rob Clardy Yes those are great references!! Ultimately we all know that it's not possible to have say a John Bonham open drum sound at the same time as a Death Metal guitar sound, but referencing both and bleeding the worlds together will create something new and refreshing! So carry on referencing great sounding and inspiring pieces of music!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

This one once again landed in my favourites list (and I am generally very picky). I have to write down this tips one day. No academic theories here, but real life situations from a real pro. I have one question: Since I mix with passion, I hardly can listen to music in a "normal" way anymore. I am just focusing on the mixes in the last years and learning while listening. Are you able to switch and turn off if you feel for and jost enjoy, without analyzing. I had the same "problem" while I was studying Jazz Guitar 17 years ago with analyzing solos a.s.o.. After academy it took me quite a while to listen to music again in a "normal" way and to shut down my intellect.

Good on you, Warren...! Thanks for inspiring people like myself, by saying it´s not just about the equipment... I have invested in lots of really cool gear through the years (my home studio is now a reality), but I have also been recording since the early 80´s on all sorts of crappy gear, and its pretty cool to hear from a Pro like yourself, that "we might actually just know what sounds great!!?"... I´m getting a lot of excellent advice watching these videos - thanks a lot :-) Erik, the viking.

Awesome video! I don't own a car so I can't use car speakers! Maybe I'll blast it in my friends car sometime haha. I do listen to my mixes through multiple TV speakers because when you boost the volume on your TV past the point of where the music stops getting louder, something happens to the mix. You'll notice all the compression going on and if there is too much compression! This also happens on various different phone and laptop speakers. Maybe I'm making some huge beginner mistakes but hey I'm learning!

Thanks as always Warren, Great stuff. One thing I've found that's really helped recently that might be of interest to you for travelling or working in hotels, is a piece of hardware called an Icon iControls Pro. It's a small control surface with 9 motorised faders and encoder knobs.I used do a lot of live sound work and have missed having actual faders to work with, it makes a big diference, plus the unit is no harder to transport than a laptop. I've been looking for a decent Tape emulation plugin recently too, so far the best one seems to be the U-He Satin, which also features tape echo simulation and flanger, it comes in at about $130, are there any you'd reccommend at that price range? Nick

Excellent stuff. Really intrigued. You mentioned about 3 reference tracks. One of them was Hey Soul Sisters by Train. What about other two tracks. You did not name them.
@Finnvbot9 жыл бұрын
My tip would be to use acoustic instruments often. There is so much wealth of tone that can be accessed just by changing the way you play an acoustic instrument. For instance, if you play the electric guitar/bass, unplug it and try playing a phrase/riff/song/whatever in a different position with different articulation instead of fiddling with the knobs. :)

Thanks again. You were talking about how a song might be listened to on tiny computer speakers. (There is a CM Magazine article about how the majority (small majority)of music listeners in Briton say the laptop speakers are their primary listening device!)On another forum I've been discussing with others how one might make allowances in a mix to account for the loss of sub bass on very small speakers. One person said he adds just a touch of distortion on bass to create additional harmonics that can preserve the base line when the sub-frequencies are lost. Another says that ruins his sound to do that.I was wondering if one couldn't have it so that added harmonics are drowned out by the sub-bass when played through good speakers while being more present when the speakers aren't capable of playing the sub-bass frequencies. Have you ever done anything like that?
