Davinci Resolve also has dynamic text capabilities, including frame-based timing; so, you never know that you might be making the next BBC News top of the hour countdown! :3 The only problem I have had is that it doesn't behave so well on (high performance) laptops that employ hybrid graphics topology.
@jorgeszabo16594 жыл бұрын
You can usually get around that by forcing enabled the dedicated gpu
@jamiemcglynn66004 жыл бұрын
Jorge Szabo I did try that as well but that didn't work either. I think what Davinci Resolve is trying to do is to get more direct or exclusive access to the hardware, but is getting confused in the process. After about 15 minutes of use, all disolays blacked out, then came back on but with the look that as if graphics drivers haven't been installed. In my instance, it is possible Davinci is likely expecting the more powerful of two GPUs to also be the one with the system's connected displays, but this is not the case because what is happening in my case is that a dedicated GPU is actually accelerating an iGPU. Chances are that DaVinci is plainly incompatible of these setups.

Awesome list! These editors you featured are a great place to start. Personally, I started with kdenlive making a few dozen vids and found it easy enough to learn and use. In the end though I moved to blender, which is arguably the most complicated software I've ever seen, but gave me the power to make my own effects and even 3d animated sequences. It is free and open source as well, has a wonderful user community and works on all platforms. So while these are an excellent place to start, you may find, as you progress, the blender rabbit hole could be worth leaping into. If you are a beginner though, kdenlive would be my choice. Some of the others are so focused on ease of use they end up limiting you.

Thanks for this. Blender is a great 3D and effects package. But I would never recommend it as a video editor (aside from editing together effects work also created in the package). The workflow and fluidly are just not up to rapid and intensive editing compared to (say) DaVinci Resolve. I did some video editing in Blender for various reasons a few weeks ago, and whilst the control is good, the flow and pace are way below the other packages here. 12 hours a day editing video in Blender would drive me (at least) insane! :)

DaVinci Resolve 16 runs very well on my laptop, which surprised me. Granted, my laptop has an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U with VEGA 8 built into the CPU (thus making it an APU to use the terminology AMD uses), and granted I have 16GB of RAM and both an NVMe and SSD drives for storage, but still, it's a cheap Lenovo E595 laptop that I paid well under $1000 Australian for brand new last year. One feature I found by accident that I really liked in DaVinci Resolve 16, was that you can drag and drop a whole stack of still images and it will create a video out of them (without sound, of course), which was perfect for the project I was working on. All I had to do was change the frame rate to 1 FPS for the clip and add it to my project, so each still picture was shown for one second, which is exactly what I wanted. It would have been just as easy to have it at say 4 FPS, or whatever suited my needs. I have not used HitFilm Express, thank you, looks like I'll have to install that and give it a go. I tried OpenShot, but found it was far too limited, I couldn't find an easy way to add content to the start of the timeline after I'd already assembled the rest of the video to add a title. Yes, I should have made up the title first, but I didn't think it would be an issue. Also I found it to be very unstable and prone to crashing.
@twmbarlwmstar4 жыл бұрын
My son uses it on the R2400G based system I built him, it does have 16GB of memory and some quite fast NVMe though- but is an APU. I know others have had success with what would be a relatively budget system- his is a Deskmini.

I too tried Openshot, KDEnlive, Pitivi, Kino etc. on Linux, Vidiot, Shotcut, DaVinci Resolve etc. on Windows. The early versions were unstable, but even after they got better, NONE of these fancy or 'pro' video editors which Chris demonstrates can do embedded captions, you have to create text on a .png file with a transparent background in eg. Gimp, then import it into the package, what if you need to alter it? I have stuck with Windows Movie Maker, you just type a caption over the clip and can change it (correct spelling etc.) at will. Nice video! I was just looking for a free video editor for Linux other day. I settled for Pitivi, easy to use and does some nice effects, but could be a little unstable sometimes. But now seeing your video looks like there is some other good alternatives to try.

Thanks as always for all the info, but in particular thanks for the spot on Hitfilm Express! For years, doing visual effects seemed an exercise in futility without a paid package. I have no objection to spending money on a good tool. But, as someone who doesn't produce video professionally, it's nice to have a starting point to build from (edit: that won't break the bank).

I think having started with Sonic Foundry Vegas nearly 20 years ago (yep, I'm in my 40's now), I still favour it greatly, but there are a few things it didn't do so well, or were perplexing. I always enjoy videos like this that might reveal better software, better features or 'slimmer' software for a more streamlined work flow where I only work with the minimum of features and get work done more efficiently. Great vid and I'll definitely get on using Resolve some time soon.. hopefully :-D.

DaVinci resolve has a cache management issue where the cache can take up full hard drives of space even when only working on say a single 1080p video. This is why I moved away from it. It appears there's no way to limit the cache too. I feel like to use it properly you'd need like a 10TB drive. Also all those writes must stress the drive. I tried Shotcut but unfortunately it gave me issues with sound on variable frame rate footage. It's a shame because other than that I did very much enjoy it. After hopping around to several different editors free and paid I settled on Vegas Pro. Although it crashes more often than some of the other paid editors (it does have autosave luckily), the latest version is pretty stable and the workflow destroys anything else on the market.

I'm just a 'beginner' editor, I simply want to find a spot where I want to cut out a chunk of video, click a back or forward button a bit to get the spot just right, then select that 'cut'. Then I move forward a few minutes to get to the end of the video I don't want, and again select a spot to cut. I then highlight this selection, hit delete, and it's gone, and the two video segments then re-connect to make a new shorter video. For that, I use VideoPad 3.57 (free software I found online). I don't do anything else with my video editor, it is simply used to cut out chunks of a video I don't want to keep.

Very informative video as always. Thank you Chris. I was looking for something that I could just pick up and use like Windows Movie Maker (which I still use) and based off your video, it looks like Kdenlive fits the bill. Yes. However, sadly, it's no longer supported by Microsoft. It's the only thing that will play my videos without the slightest bit of lag. After watching this video, I'm going to try Kdenlive. I hope it works just as well, or better than WMM.
@welshtony14 жыл бұрын
Its a great editor but as Dean said its no longer Supported and I don't think you can now get it. This is quoted direct from Microsoft "Windows Movie Maker, part of Windows Essentials 2012, is no longer available for download. Websites that offer free downloads of Movie Maker are not offering the real thing, and those downloads may contain malware, viruses, or hidden costs." But that being said it looks like you can now get "Movie Maker 10" direct from the Windows Store. That might be worth a look.

Lovely editor. There's a few websites you can still download windows essentials from. I have it and use it still. Also Inshot on android is fun for editing videos too. Looking for the eventual next editor program I'll step up to. Simplest of programs will do me.

This is a great video. I've been using commercial NLEs for years, but I'm looking into other alternatives. The one thing I wish you'd have touched on that you didn't was third-party plugin integration. While graphics stuff is harder to integrate, for me, VST support is crucial as I usually do a lot of post and repair on the audio for my video files, and have invested heavily over the years in bespoke solutions for particular problems (de-clickers, reverb removal, that kinda thing). Aside from that, loved the video.
