Charlie Boorman and Ewan McGregor ended the show 'The long way round', by saying without a doubt, the best bike on the trip that gave the least trouble, was the cameraman's. Early in Russia his brand new BMW's CDI ignition unit, with no abuse, decided to end it's life. It was priced at $2000 and they'd have to wait about a month for the new one. They purchased some Russian make of bike I can't remember, brand new for $2000. You don't see it much as it's the cameraman's bike. But it never broke down, handled everything on the trip and never caused a problem. The moral of the story, as many adventure bikers have learned the hard way these days, get something lighter and simpler. Big arsed BMW's are neither.

@@jimmallery294 It's been a long time since I watched the Long way round, but I don't remember that. Still, so your saying that something broke on those tough BMW adv designed to go anywhere bikes, that required welding to fix as it was too far to a BMW dealership to get it fixed under warranty. And... That repair job stuffed up the bikes electronics? So if something broke on the Russian bike (nothing did), due to it having no computerized parts, the welding most likely wouldn't have effected it? But this constitutes abuse? I don't think even in your scenario, does BMW come out looking good on that occasion.

Mate the Oils today will keep a high performance engine going . Oil & filter change every Five thousand or six months motel Synthetic 7100 $103 plus oil filter $20 . It’s the Electrical system . Alternator , battery , Rectifier that needs constant maintenance and upgrade . On my GSXR 750 to Busa I would purchase Rectifier from China 🇨🇳 fraction of the cost approx $ 40 , battery from Sydney & alternator test output every 20 k by Suzuki . These machines are high performance machines and demand maintenance . Not cheap to buy & maintain but what a pleasure to ride aye ? General maintenance , spark plugs tyres oils to manufacture specifications , good riding skills and enjoy . Stay upright and have a nice day .Andrej Kondisenko Cairns Australia 🇦🇺

I would include the Honda C90/CT90 to the list. Probably the most reliable vehicle ever built. As an international traveler have seen C90 being abused by hauling huge loads. I just returned from SE Asia, Cambodia I saw hundreds of C90 equipped with a 5th wheel type hitch mounted were the passenger seat should have been. The largest load I saw was a trailer with two water buffalos.

I bought a new XR650L, I had for 8 years, basically is an OK machine but it had a few issues. For the first 4 years it was trouble-free, then it started to hesitate to start, I changed the CDI, it was cured for a bit but that problem continued for ever... You need to change the front sprocket frecuently or it will chew up your shaft fast, use the KKBike italian one, that solves the problem forever!!! Suspension linkage seems to get tired very soon as well. The starer needs a change after 5 or 6 years. The rear brake is not powerful enough, put the best pads you can find and change the brake fluid frecuently. The footpegs are crap, change them for IMS ones. My height is 5'9 (1,75 Mts) and I really needed to raise the handle bars 2". Finally, the paint is not good, it starts to peel on the welded areas. At least for me, the XR 650 has been the least reliable Honda I ever had.

I live in Vietnam and I see these bikes ALL THE TIME. the Honda cub. I've seen so many of them that have well over 100 thousand kilometers on them and they're still going strong. The Honda cub is the number one selling vehicle in the world. I know that it's small and most people consider it a scooter which it's not. But it is massively important to the history of motorcycles. They never die. They are truly the Energizer bunny of the motorcycle world.

It's an interesting video but I think it would be better if you used your real voice instead of an AI voice reading a script. Also, you keep coming back to 100,000 Km. Which is 65K miles like it was really great. It's not. 100K Km is to be expected without any problems on any bike or vehicle. Mine has gone 1M Km / 650K miles and all I did was to do the regular service, change wear parts like bearings etc. Only had a seal/rubber gasket fail on me once but it was not an issue that I could not drive. I am missing the Suzuki V-Stroms on the list, very reliable bikes.

What??? Who put this video together?? Certainly nobody who has a clou of motorbikes... Honda XR 650: Camshaft seizing in the cylinder head bearing, valve seat falling out of the cylinder head due to cracks in the head...the whole engine suffers from overheating issues DRZ 400...okay...really good bike FJR 1300....hmm well reliable yes...but a heavy lumb of steel...not really a pleasure to ride KLR 650...yes indeed...a versatile bike, but very problematic with the balancer chain..this can kill the engine in a second completely...which happens far too often....and ...excessive oil consumption Harley Sportster: here you realy disqualify yourself completely...what you show ist the "The Sportster" this is the Indian rubbish the Milwaukee people import to annoy Harley friends...your tales about this machine ist completly wrong. Honda CB750....well indeed this bike was a gamechanger and I love it...but reliable..? Definetly not.... BMW GS: Ähm...are you sure you live in the same world where this bike is at home? Or are you sponsered by BMW? The list of severe defects that caused and forced BMW to call the owners bringing the bikes back to the workshop is the longest ever in motorbike history, including issues like the rear wheel hubs breaking!!! The Honda spaceship? Okay...I have no idea about it....

Not really based on any factual information....what on earth does Ewan McGregor, and the other guy, have to do with anything. It was between KTM and BMW, and KTM turned them down so they settled for the BMW, and the frame broke...The fact is....many many bikes these days are "reliable". the list is in the hundreds, and many many many bikes would happily go around the world, more than once....settle down people...modern bikes are "mostly" very reliable.
