When I started riding, a scrambler meant a 250/350 off road powerhouse - maybe 400 at most and they were an absolute blast. Some crazy people rode 500s, but they were regarded more as long distance desert racer type machines. Now! I find it hard to understand why all that weight is attractive off road and the power of a big bike only necessary in order to get the heavy lump to jump just half as high as those old small scramblers did. Yet suddenly little 300-400s are making a slow comeback. Most of the machines in this review will never see off road.

A lot of people motorcycle shopping want ONE bike to to everything. So they want a scrambler that’s can dabble off-road, cruise on the highway, and carve up some twisties. The original scrambler seems to be a common ancestor to all those dirt bikes you mentioned, thought to be long extinct. While some of the modern scramblers, produced under artificial light in a lab, are pale imitations of the yesteryear breed, some ring true to spirit of the scrambler. The Triumph, the Norton, the Caballero are works of art, and they certainly appeal to my sense of nostalgia...the Triumph and Caballero are both available here in Australia, and there's not a lot between them in price. I think the less expensive single 450cc is probably the one I'd go for, and a fair bit lighter, too: 150kg vs Triumph 203kg. Great video.

I've had many bikes over many genres in my 71 years. The Kawasaki KLR-650 was the one that I got the most muddy. Now my hooligan bike is the 2017 Triumph Bonneville Bobber. It is too much fun though & I cherish it too much to risk cart paths or single track. I had 6 on the road at once from Honda GL-1800, 2007 Triumph Rocket III Classic 2300cc, Suzuki 1250 Bandit, 2011 Kawasaki 650 Versys, the aforementioned KLR-650, down to the 2006 Honda PS-250 Big Rukus. I got tired of paying the Registry, Insurance company, Exise tax, & Mass Inspection fees every year, so I only have the Bandit & Bobber left, but I haven't had any qualms about having 2 1200's in the stable lately. Maybe my scrambling days are over ( until I start suffering my second Childhood Syndrome )!!! lol

I own Triumph 1200 XE. Great bike. Yes, heavy ish. With engine guards and some other optional stuff, full of fuel is 510 lb. I'm currently on a quest to make it lighter. Shaving 30 lb without sacrificing functionality (and while gaining some power from aftermarket exhaust) is not a problem. 50 lb is doable but there will be compromises. I tried the 2017 Desert Sled and hated the clunky transmission and clutch. Bought the 2017 Street Scrambler and consider it more pleasant in many ways, but you are correct - the suspension is ok for a smooth road - totally inadequate for off road. Still, it is good looking, so far it has been reliable, and I had plenty of fun on dirt and gravel roads with it. Since then I test drove the 1200 Scrambler and found it disappointing - heavy, top heavy, and I hated the electronic dash which was impossible to read with the sun glare. I'll get a proper dual sport when I have more time for trail riding.

I have liked the 1200 Scrambler from Triumph ever since I saw it. It's pretty awesome. I'd have to rip off all the bulky crap off it though, and reflash the ECU to eliminate the scorching lean-run heat from the motor and wake it up. Also really like the Ducati Desert Sled. One issue I have with all of these bikes is the pretty low fuel capacity. I mean, if they are going to do the scrambly bits, you probably want fuel that can get you out in the boonies and back without putting a monowheel trailer or strapping on sapling-snagging bags. Neither of these bikes can be my "only" bike. I prefer snorty fast naked bikes for scratching on the street. But I would love to bomb down gravel and fire trails to see what's out there from time to time.

I've been lucky enough to demo some of these bikes. The SCR950 is a joke. It sucks on road or off. The Guzzi is fun on road but no off-road chops. The Indian is a blast on road but too precious to take off road. The Desert Sled is great everywhere. The 1200XE is fun everywhere too but it is pretty heavy off road and pricey. I would choose a Tenere 700 over any of these but if I had to pick one of these Scramblers, I would go with the Duc.

Yep, the Desert Sled is the closest in specs to the T7. Just needs bigger wheels and it would be perfect.

The Duc DS is by far the best all rounder, power, weight and looks. However I built my own scrambler out of a monster that beats the pants off any of these.

Desert Sled looks good - but you will spend more time fixing it then riding it. And if you take it into adventure, make sure you do it in a group...when you least expected it, something will break...never trust it, never depend on it. It is good for a weekend excursion, but not an adventure into the death valley trip.

I’m waiting for that sportster scrambler 975, from Harley Davidson! Should be awesome! But in the real world; the Ducati sounds pretty good to me! I hear it’s a very fun bike to ride!

You and me both! The Flat Tracker concept looked awesome. They should bring that to the market.

Scramblers are a largely a styling exercise but most of them are way nicer to ride on the road than dual sports like the Ducati 1100.

Missed. TPR Italian factory, FCR French builders, Metisse British built, CCM British built.

As an SCR950 owner takes it out to the beach and farm, i can say that it can be scrambled. Buuuut, takes alot of skill, its not fun at all, and when it falls, its weight will bend your handlebars, break your levers, dent your tank and so on. Great street bike though.
