great video ;) I have a 2005 DL1000 Cstrom dirty, sctratched, oily chain and some drips of oil under the engine. I don't even need to insure it. I can sleep or have a beer with my firends in peace. It may not be a flashy bike and attracts attention but It's always there, always starts, no parts missing and it brings me on the pavement and in any trails... basically everywhere I want. Like my dog, iut's not a show dog sometimes chews my shoe but it's faithfull and stand by me. My wife can say the same about me lollll

Something I appreciate about your channel is that you do travel, and you will answer these questions about at home as well as away from home. It seems like there are so many people who will shrug when asked what to do at a hotel, even just at the store. They basically expect their bike to be stolen, to have to file with insurance, and use that to replace the motorcycle. They just take it for granted. And so many people only ever ride for pleasure, either trailering the bike to where they begin riding, or just ride. And they'll do a loop, then go back to where they started, and go home. All of that ignores camping, hotels, going to work, stopping for a meal, a stop at the store, whatever, which happens for many people much more often than going on long tours. However, securing a bike as if one is touring means the motorcycle is less likely to be disappeared unexpectedly.

Good video! I use an ABUS Lock with an alarm system and a heavy Hartmann chain. I have an old motorbike, I am more afraid they will cut the bike so they can steal the lock and the chain. ;)

My physical security includes a hardened chain covered in a segmented, articulated s.s. shroud to make it more difficult to cut through & a keyed, case hardened padlock with a hardened sleeve on the hasp used as a disclock. I made myself get used to using the disclock every time I parked, even in my own garage, so that it is now 2nd nature. Thank you, Pavlin, for all of your help to us riders. Keep it up, my friend.

I agree with 99% of your points. The other 1% is that 99% of thieves are not creative. They look for the easiest take and like you say are "lazy", that's why they are thieves. Anything to simply "slow them down" will make them look elsewhere in most cases. I'm lucky to now live in a rural area in the states with next to no crime. I always use the tent fly rope method and thought I was the only one...I've had Elk wake me by tripping over my tent ropes before. LOL.

From my research it seems thieves hate big U-Locks the most. So that's what I got. Along with a wheel clamp and a brake lever lock (I use this when I'm roving). I love the idea of a personal alarm having a pin that gets pulled out should the bike be moved by thieves. Very useful and unexpected if done discretely, I'll look into that. Thanks again!

i use a 20 level security chain and 2 disc locks, one has the alarm. i keep a good heavy cover over it that is wire secured and i keep it in a garage. ...oh yeah,,,,i have insurance.

Another tip that may be a bit far fetched but is important is to not ''advertise'' your motorcycle especially in your neighborhood. Living in a big city means that if somebody spots your motorcycle somewhere 10km away from your home unless they follow you around, you should consider yourself safe. Most of the thefts are done by people that live very close to you and spot your motorcycle everyday and can learn about your habits. As for ''public expositon'' dont park your motorcycle in places with few people but neither park it infront of a night-club and have it photographed among with the lady at the entrance and posted in fb to advertise the club (sounds stupid but i have seen many people do so where i live...). Dont park or show-up with your bike in parts of your neighborhood where scum like the ones that get involved in thefts and such stuff gather. Dont post pictures on fb or make them only visible to a very small group of trustful people. Dont talk big about your motorcycle unless you intent to sell it. It seems stupid but you know what your bike can do and that should suffice.

Actually some good advice there... "Social Media" has become an effective tool for thieves! "Google Maps" show what people have in their backyards, and possible 'routes' to a house that would be out of sight of neighbors, and people post Vacation Pictures...telling everyone they are NOT at home for the next 10 days...and so on. And the people in front of a club -- including the 'Bouncer' -- don't give 2 cents about your bike...and will be more likely to LAUGH while it is being loaded into a trailer than to call Police...

I appreciate you taking the time to make this video ! Most of what I see, along these lines & most anything these days ! People make video's that will make them money. Cut & dry. Occassionally, someone like yourself, really cares as well as has a passion & knows how awful it is to have what most of us see as out prized possetion (I do !) Here one night, gone the next a.m. You know the business, know & see what the current theft trends are & seeing that wet towel really opened my eyes ! Surprisingly; and I could be wrong, but I believe Europe has a higher motorcycle theft rate than the States ? Believe it or not; We all know just like when a new model bike comes out, every reputable tuner spends a ton of time figuring out how to gain entry & override /reprograhm certain e.c.u. functions, the same (figuratively speaking; I respect ANYONE making an honest living & if it so happens they work to make by bike perform better, they are a plus for me & society!) That the thieves are always coming up w/new techniques to defeat the technology & steal our bikes ! I'm certain now a days w/the internet especially, what use to be the trend was some method of theft (I'm guessing has to start somewhere, right?) & took time to catch on, travel & progress (for lack of better term!) Granted, not much time. Now, It seem's once someone post's something of how they defeated the "Newest & Best" product out (all I can picture was the first time I saw a pen used to open an "unpickable" cylindrical lock) theft & ways to pry this, pick that, bump this etc. Now spreads overnight ! One thing I have learned & I feel you touched on it, is effective equipment, no one method is a "sleep easy" solution. The harder it's made to steal, or the more we can discourage them & not be a "target" the more likely they will move on to a bike with less, or no aftermarket anti-theft devices. Most people say if a determined professional thief (which I believe is maybe 5-10% of them) Want's the bike, short of 24 hr. Armed guards under lock, key & in a safe, they will most likely get it ! I personally feel that the cover & not leaving exactly what you have for theft prevention in plain sight works in out favor. Doesen't let them prepare & plan ahead. I like my bikes secured to a stationary object whenever possible. Their are some quality (imo & expirience) not to expensive anchors on the market I like. Quality disc lock, quality, well researched, tried & tested for anything I use ! A 2 way pager is a must for me. If & when it goes off, I NEVER just run outside as I'm told people looking to steal it will find ways to test your response. Be it giving a neighborhood kid $5 to set it off etc. & have multiple camera's positioned where I park & store my main ride. I try not to stick to any noticeable patterns & intentionally, vary my routine & movements (appearance wise; as far as procedure for securing it, I ALWAYS utilize the plan I made & all the devices. No matter how tired I am, because Murphy has a way of showing that 1 time I get lazy ! Also really like tying a rope if your in a tent or something ! Just liked the video & maybe my experiences & thoughts can help someone not have to deal with a situation NONE of us want too ! TY , Again. -Brian

My bike was stolen out of the parking garage of my apartment building. 3 guys. 1 patrolling the garage while the others worked on the bike. took them all of 25 seconds to cut the lock with a battery grinder and maybe 20 seconds to break the steering lock. In and out within 6 minutes. Now I'm very hesitant to buy a new bike bcs they'll likely come and steal it again in 2 weeks.. Very interested in how I can make my bike more secure. Thx for the video

Good tips. If you use a disc lock remember to put a rubber bad or a note on your dash. You do not want to drive off with it on :) Very good point on the cover as well, but remember to keep it plain black.. My friend bought a KTM 1290 Super duke, "the Beast" and he got a cover in bright orange with that name over it. Did it get stolen? Thieves love it when you tell them what's underneath. Best solution I have seen is a anchor in the concrete with a very shiny galvanized chain and lock running through the rear and the frame.

"Lock Placement" can be pretty effective. As you say, all we can really do is "slow them down"...and hopefully that will create too much risk for them. So turning the disc lock inward is very good, and I also place it on the rear in a spot between my brake caliper and where it comes close to the swing-arm. On my personal bike, I have a similar situation in front between the caliper and front fork. I am also authorized to park in 'Handicap Parking' [artificial hip, fractured lumbar, and artificial knee] so I back in and place a heavy cable around the sign post and the rear of the bike. [frame, if I can get close enough] And both of my disc locks have alarms...and I have a GPS Tracker embedded on the bike in a spot that they would never see it. Admittedly, if I am just stopping for lunch, I only use the rear disc lock with alarm activated. I figure that will slow them down enough for me to get there and put a stop to it all. If I am leaving the bike 'alone' for a while, I add the other devices.

GREAT TIPS! I have a disc lock and heavy cable. On trips I pack them but rarely use them. Like they say with houses, "Locks just keep out the honest people." You can't stop a determined thief...just frustrate them enough that they look for an easier target.

I had a motorbike stolen in 1994. It was parked inside my locked garage with my car. The bike was on steering lock and would have to be lifted over the car to get it out unless you moved the car first. This was exactly what they did and at 3:20AM I ran down to see a utility truck with my bike on the back heading into the night. The point is if someone wants something they will take it regardless of how you try to make it a less attractive option to them. Always be insured and park wisely.

In my Country even if you park it in your bedroom the bad guys will come for it when they want bcos its an inside job. Someone close to you or someone in your neighborhood know all about you and your bike. As a mechanic who always lock every bike in my shop, the bad guys broke in and couldn't cut the heavy duty chain but they remove the tires leaving it in the chain and took the bikes without the tires. My solution now is pay security to watch over my shop at night. Oh by the way i also bought a shotgun, cant wait to avenge my lost motorcycles

The most important sentence is, "saftey is an illusion". It's always only about slowing down the thieves. When folks afraid of theft, they have to sleep ON their bikes. And even THAT might be helpful. At night I use a disc-lock with alarm, a throttle-clutch--lock with alarm and a heavy chain. For the rest of the day I use just the disc lock and the handle bar-lock.

I traveled across India north south east west ,four times on Ninja 250cc,Honda 250cc and RE enfiled 500cc, they were almost new and very attractive as well each time I traveled. I cared less about my bike being stolen etc., but what I did was that I got in to hotels ,lodges etc., where there was safe parking. When there was no such space, the hotel managers took initiative and kept the bike after night 10 pm at a different place like near the hotel 's kitchen window etc., because any bike theft in nearby hotel will be taken very seriously by police in India. While on the go, I always parked the bike right in the front of the hotel and I always took my seat right behind window so that all the while I took my lunch ,dinner etc., I was watching my bike. And in hotels ,wayside motels when I stopped . I took care such a facility is there . Otherwise I just moved on. It was because to steal a bike from right in front of bar takes the thief only two minutes or at most three minutes !! you can watch youtube videos of bikes being stolen in India yourself . I am using only a break lever lock because if you are absent minded like me , your disc lock will break your bike disc for sure. I think fixing an alarm inside the engine ,under the seat and the loud speakers back and forth of the bike would be very good deterrent for thieves. I am going to fix this ( you need the services of professional electrician to fix these types) before my next journey.

Thanks. This is really good advice. I have been worried about how to secure on a trip and still be lightweight, and it also demonstrated that the way I store now at home, is worthless. Upgrading immediately. The hard part so far is finding fitment information to see if it will fit my disc. I cannot find online, so I guess I need to measure the holes on my disc and make an educated guess.

My Sacurity plan is the following: - I drive a bike nobody wants ;) and all Brand Stickers etc are cleaned. - ABUS RS7000 Disclock with Alarm on frontwheel - reinforced chain with ABUS discus lock in the rear rim lock it to the frame - Barlock is locked - i left the first gear in while parking - matte black cheap cover It woks for 5 years now. I have a small rack bag mounted on the bike where i put my locks with me when i drive.

1) A modified Master Lock padlock with a hardened sheath over the shank & a day-glo teather, to go up to the handlebars as a reminder of its installation, used as a Disc Lock. Cannot fit a file, saw, or chisel into anywhere on it to cut or break it loose (my own design). 2) A chain made of 3/4" X 1-1/8" hardened links, shielded with a braided S.S. sheath & using a hardened, oversized lock. This is used in my garage, it's attached to an anchor, which in turn is attached to a piece of the rebar embeded in the reinforced concrete floor. 3) Hidden "kill switch", relay-connected to her main power feed. Switch doesn't even LOOK like any kind of a switch, which also helps in its concealment. 4) Hidden, redundant fuel cut-off that doesn't look like your typical "petcock lever"-type control. 5) Redundant ignition switch/system. Relay connected through the Aux. Lights (Road Lamps) that, when deactivated, won't allow bike to run AND makes it sound like there's a "driveability problem", as the engine will seemingly be TRYING to fire-up, but just "can't seem to want to run". All of this for a 2005 Suzuki GSF1200s Bandit. NO fuel inj., NO ABS, NO advanced computer controls/electronics, NO ups, NO extras. Just an "old-school technology" bike that I want to keep around forever.

I know a case in Bulgaria when a tourist had their car stolen even when parked in the the hotels private parking with hired security man... The receptionists and security guy were all on it with the thieves... Still, I prefer the private parking although is costly. In Sozopol, for example, I paid 2 levs per day for private parking. In Veliko Tŭrnovo, also private parking and in Nessebar I had private indoor garage with the owner as a supervisor always at the location. In Greece, the same: private parking on a big hotel. Thanks for the video thought. You got me change my mind about the alarm disk locker. Instead I think I will buy that disk lock you talked about and, as a surprise I'll place hidden under the passenger seat a little tinny 130db alarm that activates only on movement. There are very cheap on aliexpress, under 10$ if I recall well. PS: I'm a new subscriber as of today. Keep up the good work, I simply love your videos. And who knows, maybe we'll even meet one day. Loved your video. I already use most of your ideas, but am going to go buy another disc lock for the rear. What a great idea. The one thing I did was buy a cover without a logo on it (why advertise right?) and covered it in contrasting paint drips and duct tape. The thought is crap cover, crap bike. Saw some guys near Detroit cover their Harleys with Honda covers to keep the thieves away. I also park the bike at the front entrance of any hotel/motel I stay at. Tipped the night clerk as a reminder my bike is their and have in the past paid the Valet at hotels to park my bike in the Valet parking area. They are looking for an easy grabs so let them take the other bike beside yours. (As long as it is not your buddies)

Many years ago I used to loosen the rear brakes and remove a HT connector, to avoid bike theft. Today, alarms are useless and even with a bike securely locked, bike thieves will simply reverse a van and lift your pride and joy into the back. They even carry helmets incase anyone challenges them and they can just say that they are uplifting a broken down motorcycle. Theres little point in constantly worrying about the bike being safe, so why own one.

You can easily get a tool to break windows in a car emergency kit. By that logic Why own a car if someone can just break it and take it? It seems like a combination of chains disc brakes and GPS trackers seems to work

I used the Abu chain that doubles as a disk lock (same as in video) for my Yamaha WR450r that did not have any key to start it. Kept it chained to something solid when at home and used disk lock when stopping at stores and similar. I also had an movement detecting alarm for a while that worked very well without any false alarms.

Great points - my best defense from theft... is a nice low deductible on my insurance policy :). I have never heard of a chain lock though. Great idea.

I live in apartments. I just bought a Scooter 2 days ago and a couple locks. Disc brake and chain. Im still worried. But tmrw i will buy a cover and see where i can find one of those pin pull alarms you have. I know thieves will take your shit if they really want it no doubt. I definetley will use a couple if these tips that i didnt know and should beable to sleep at night. Because indeed it keeps me up with worry. Thanks for the heads up and advice.
