80's aesthetics aimed at what they thought would be 21 century, almost all futuristic. The heroes of old, both western and eastern, were mature men and mid-20's women, and many were older. We didn't put that much burden on youth to be "sucessful" so early. So, most characters also were representative of this age, with kids being comic relief or exceptionally gifted genius. Also, women in 80's were meant to look fit, slim and wild, with hair that looked like lion's manes. The point was, those youngsters should aim to become full grown men and women. Nowdays everything is too much precocious, to much early, too much rush, thus, characters "evolved" to be much, much younger, but fully functional. This is how Market controls our lives by culture.

What happened with anime? Was there a money over abundance back then in the 80's and 90's? All these shows look so good, they make many new ones look very cheap.
@presper64346 жыл бұрын
These are openings in the 80s. They're designed to be very appealing, to act as a hook to capture viewers attention and watch the show. Thus a lot of money has been pooled into the animation to look as cool and fluid as possible. Its likely that most of the anime in this list didn't have the same animation quality as their openings. As for why more modern anime doesn't have such spectacular openings like their 80's counterparts is only a guess. I would think its more of a culture change than being cheap. There's streaming now, and openings really don't have the importance they once had. It could also be that anime is still very expensive today. Many studios in Japan still draw every frame traditionally. Instead of doing it completely digitally. Which could limit the production value of the animation. Don't take my word for it though.
@ghost0856 жыл бұрын
Presper Very well put.That reminds me of the Thundercats intro, so smooth.
@pershop49506 жыл бұрын
I think what happened is that the modern group of anime tries to produce very fast and appeal to a worldwide audience (or maybe Westerners). The older ones were really for Japanese or Asian audiences, and slow progress was made on them. For example, it was not unheard of to wait 1 or more years for a sequel!

You see all these anime from the 80's, and you realize how sad it is that a majority of it is not English subbed, or completely ignored on anime sites. Wouldn't hurt of course if companies in Japan decided to put these on DVD, or make them more available to watch somewhere. Hell even stuff from the 90's, like Magical Taruruuto-kun is nowhere to be found, unless you go by devious means, and it's still not subtitled. Toei put up all of Ghost Sweepper Mikami with English subtitles, and I'm thankful for that, but Taruruuto is also their property, and is a bit popular. But it's pretty much left to rot.

I find it telling that not a single Bubblegum Crisis opening/ending made this list. That is truly a sad thing indeed.

Nice video. Dry Your Tears from Hokuto No Ken should be on here as well.

Kimagure orange road has the best overall music among any 80’s 90’s anime I’ve seen

Daicon IV has to be an amazing anime if it uses a song from my favorite album of all time for the opening.

There's something magical in "Enka-ish" songs in Anime. I can't explain. Just like the 3rd ending of Yuu Yuu Hakusho "Unbaransu na kiss wo shite".

There's too many good anime during 80s that one of my favorite Sonic Soldier Borgman won't make it in the list 😭

Well done. A bit strange that the other Zeta or ZZ Gundam OP wasn't included. Nevertheless, great work.

Very helpful! Im in the process of writing and animating a short segment of 80s style anime. This gave me alot of details to look out for

Oh that sounds very nice. I don't know if this compilation is comprehensive or representative enough, but if I'm glad if it helped you on discovering new shows and styles.

There is no Touch. This anime has so many good openings/endings ! My favorite one is the second op, Ai ga Hitoribocchi (1985) !

I don’t see how some people loathe the medium like they do when series like these exist, right there, existing for your own personal discovery. Old school anime is so fascinating.

Kind of sad that there's no spot for any of the openings/endings from "Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl" in this. It's an underrated anime that does a good job of showing the beauty of Judo with a good story to boot. It's partially why I was inspired to get back into Martial Arts training last year after I started watching/reading it. Oh well, it's a pretty obscure manga/anime and I understand completely. I was very satisfied to see Cobra the Space Pirate at the top 10 though. hehe. 😸

...Head-Cha-La gets a -M? C'mon man! That's probably the most legendary song in all of the Dragon Ball franchise! I think that opening deserved a +M ontop of the +A, lol.

We were going to have a fight until #2 popped up! I appreciate this list, as I now have more anime I have to look up than ever before. And thank you for this trip down memory lane for the ones that I knew. I also loved the .5 for the two English songs on the list.
