TOP 9 WEIRD Sushi Worth Trying In Japan: Only $1 Per Plate!

Oh boy. This time we're embracing the weird part of Japan and trying some strange, weird and downright crazy sushi from Hamazushi!
Hamazushi is a popular conveyor-belt train sushi restaurant chain that can be found all over Japan. It is one of my favourites to go to, as they offer seasonal and monthly specials and variety of sushi like no other! they mostly specialize in 100 Yen (1 dollar) sushi dishes, however, they also offer premium sushi if you're craving something more upscale!
I must be in luck, because as I began this episode in my local Hamazushi in Matsuyama, Japan, I realized that they offered some weird sushi that I've never tried before! I don't call myself a Fomad (Food Nomad) for nothing! It's time I showed you all what Japan is all about in its amazing food cuisine that goes beyond outside the box!
In this episode, I go through 9 bizarre looking sushi one by one and showcase their taste and uniqueness!
#9 Pickled Firefly Squid
Gotta start off with a bang! Honestly, I've never even seen this one, let alone try it! This whole raw mini-squid got me so weirded out, that i began to wonder if this was a good idea. This special sushi was surprisingly clean tasting, and it wasn't fishy at all. Overall, It was a very fresh sushi that I enjoyed TRYING. However, the crunchy bit in the end thew me off...
#8 Cheese Hamburger
...And we dive in straight to a kid's wish come true! It's hamburger. It's sushi. It's hamburger sushi! What's not to love about the juicy hamburger patty topped off with torched cheese? Absolutely nothing. My favourite, and something that you must eat, when you have the chance.
#7 Boiled Icefish Wrap
Oh man. This one was weird. Tiny icy white fish all over a bed of seaweed. I was scared going in, however, this sushi was pretty good! It didn't taste fishy AT ALL, and the mixture of ginger, wasabi and soy sauce made it very pleasant.
#6 Shredded Oval Squid
Now we're talking! shredded pieces of raw squid meat? Yes, please! I loved this one - it is as fresh as you can get it, and it's definitely something I would get again. You need to try it at least once!
#5 Seared Bonito
This one was a delicious piece of sushi for sure. The char left a mark of strong flavor in addition to the fish flesh that was pure, elegant, and meaty. The two combines like no other, and It's something I dream about now. Give it a try!
#4 Arkshell
I always noped out of getting this Arkshell sushi, because it always looked so weird...
Like... What is it? Turns out it was clam, and it honestly wasn't bad at all. if you've had clam cooked before, then you know what this will taste like. It's just the texture you have to grow to appreciate. I just might.
#3 Sakura Shrimp Gunken
Japan always surprises me with its cuisine. Delicious mini-shrimps all over my plate, covered in seaweed. What's not to like? This gave off an intense amount of shrimp flavour, and the heads were not crunchy at all! Highlight of my day.
#2 Smoked Duck
If I came back to Canada with the duck sushi, everyone will flip out for sure. Why don't we have this as a regular thing? I love smoked duck sushi with my life. It was west meets east, Ketchup and mustard.... So good!
#1 Monkfish Liver
Now, I really didn't want to try this, but maybe I'll come to love liver (nope).
I'm not a organ meats guy myself, and it's difficult for me to try irregular types of food.
However, I believe in the saying "try everything at least once", and you know what?
It was not bad at all. Not. Bad. At. ALL.
#0 Fatty Tuna
I'm going to miss eating this once I leave Japan... I am not looking forward to that at all.

I love how brave you are trying something new, whenever I go to sushi place , I only order Shrimp, Lobster, and spicy abalone sushi cuz those are all my fave. Im too afraid to try something new cuz Im afraid to waste my money 😂😂

Glad you liked monkfish liver (ankimo). It's one of my favorite foods ever... such a punchy, bright "happy" flavor, with no resemblance to the taste of land animal livers. But it's hard to find in my area, and expensive when you do find it.

Love your expressions! 😂 We have that arkshell and smoked duck sushi as well in Australia! Haha the arkshell is actually a red clam, yes you’re right. That firefly squid looks like a monster/alien to us 🦑 scary looking! Well done on eating those 👍🏻

Thank you! :)) I never really ate sushi back home (Canada) so these were some crazy types of sushi that blew me away. The firefly squid was... quite the experience! If you do end up seeing it, definitely try it because it's not as weird as it looks!

i've never seen that firefly squid sushi before, so crazy looking to get that as a nigiri haha. the other ones i didn't find weird. hehe how did you live in japan for 2 years and not know shiso leaf? hehe.. it's fun watching you eat these! i love those white little fishies, looked so good in the nori wrap! omg those shrimpies are so cuuuute!!! but OMG monkfish liver is so bomb! at least they didn't give you cod fish sperm, haha i bet you would've freaked [which btw is also delish!] i need to take you to eat more crazy sushi hehehe~~~ let's go!!!
