To be fair to that, "Beach Volleyball Series," that was mentioned from 2018, Harukana Receive, ended up being a delightful series with great music, animation (especially when it comes to the sport itself), not a ton of fanservice (despite being about High School Girls Beach Volleyball), and really solid and well done character arcs. Seriously, Harukana Receive is a hidden gem of an anime that far too few gave a chance.

I hope the new Higurashi anime can more appropriately convey the true themes of Higurashi than the old one which made people just believe it was senseless violence for the sake of violence. Honestly the original adaption kinda sucks in some major areas. The new trailers have shown a lot of the club just hanging out, so I hope it portrays more of the trust and friendship values that the Visual Novel pushes. Focusing on the friendship also makes the tragedy of when it all falls apart much better, but it also makes scenes in Chapters 6-8 hit *MUCH* more harder

This. The fact that Higurashi is mainly remembered for its gore and violence rather than its story and characters is a disservice to the series and is more than enough reason to try again.

I love the old anime... but you are quite right. It had story issues (like, things the left out, and then had to reintroduce using a new mini-arc). My favourite chapter is probably 3, it has such a huge amount of human drama with satoko in it... the anime falls short for me in that kind of thing. As you say, it makes 6-8 more poignant.

Thank you so much for addressing this! As a VN reader, I've always thought the anime fell too short to properly convey the themes and messages that were presented in the novel and there are a ton! Higurashi tackles a variety of topics politics, tradition, friendship, corruption, philosophy, self-hatred and so on. It's sad that most people only remember 2 keywords, cute girls and gore. Can't really blame them since those were the main impressions that the anime adaptation aimed to highlight.

Let's be honest, the anime is janky and really cheesy at times lol. That's part of the charm really, but I'd love to see a different take. HOWEVER, I have a feeling they're just remaking the anime itself, instead of making a new anime adaption from the vn. I dont think they're gonna change much or lean more heavily on the visual novel. Which sucks, because the material is so good. Look at how awesome the manga is just because of how they adapted it

@@1mikeap4 Too true, but that was it's hook. Look at the adaptation of the 3rd installment When The Seagulls Cry. They didn't finish that up, and while not the best adaptation slowed didn't involve as much violence and gore. The mind game of the story, which was done very well in the first animated arc of Higurashi, took a backseat to the gore and violence slowly but surely.

As a resident Key child, I'm also a huge fan of Maeda's earlier works (Little Busters and Clannad especially) and tbh like you, I thought his previous anime original titles like Angel Beats and Charlotte weren't as strong as his original VN titles. However, Maeda has commented in the production material of what we have that he's aware of the pacing problems his previous anime titles had and is trying to fix that by simplifying this new narrative to be more like something like Kanon. Whether it works, we'll have to see, but that alone has made me quite excited for it honestly

But if I look at anime, 2021 beginns stellar: - Promised Neverland S2 - That time I got reincanated as a Slime S2 - Dr. Stone S2 - Cells at Work S2 and Black - Beaststars S2 - Laid back Camp S2 - I'm a Spider, So what (Ok, I don't know yet if this is as good as the LN-readers say) - Non Non Byori S3 - Horimia (I love the manga) I know that that's mostly sequels. But it's sequels of some of my favrorite shows from the last 2 years. Some virus might delay some shows, but I think most of them where already delayed at some point.

The only reason 2020 has been a let down is because of all the delays due to COVID. Most of the delayed anime was delayed to 2021 on top of what's currently planned for 2021. We're literally getting double the anime next year and they're going to be amazing. If the pandemic doesn't interfere next year, it's going to be one of the best years of anime in history.

Have to go ahead and say right out of the gate that saying the original Higurashi anime was 1:1 isn't quite accurate. I think it's a decent adaptation, but it left a LOT out from the original VN. I think even just aligning closer to the VN for a new anime would be worth the production.

The most important point of remaking is the lack of character's motivation of why they acted that was which was skipped in the original. The biggest one would be the sonozaki twin's childhood story which most of it was skipped. So YES there is a definite need for a remake.

The Jujutsu Kaisen manga is absolutely awesome, so your source material is fine. Animation seems consistent from what we've seen of episode one, and the music is kind of a mish-mash but works well. I'm excited!

You compare Higurashi with Fruits Basket and FMA in this video and I would argue that Higurashi deserves a remake for the same reasons those shows did. In comparison with the visual novels huge chunks of the story, key plot points and themes where skimmed over or cut entirely. As someone who loved the show when I watched it as a teen, trying to watch it now makes the many flaws the show has (even as a stand alone piece of media) are very apparent. There is so much more of value in Higurashi outside of the horror and gore so I hope this adaptation can better capture the feeling of the visual novel and its mysteries.

Accordging to people who have read the novel what you expect from Majo no Tabitabi is less wholesomeness and more like Kino's Journey... Personally I don't expect much from the fall season except for the third season of Danmachi. I'll probably look into a few more series, but mainly I'm going to bide my time until the Winter season 2021 - not because 2020 will be over then, but because from what I've seen so far it will genuinely rock. You might consider making a TOP 10 anticipated anime video for that season.

In regards to Hogurashi... There's an argument to be said that the 2006 anime *wasn't* a complete adaptation because quite a few elements that matter to the broader narrative were dropped. Namely how Bernkastel is involved in all of this. And now that Umineko's VN is complete and we're starting to get sequel series to *that* in the form of Ciconia, it might be worth revisiting the plot of Higurashi to convey a more complete picture. And heck, there are entire arcs in the Manga to adapt that weren't in the anime, there're a treasure trove for the series to use.

Higurashi's remake exists because the original anime is kind of bad. Like, you look at the anime on its own and it seems pretty good, then you read the VN and realize that it is really not that good of an adaptation. New Higurashi likely hopes to fix a lot of the major issues with the original, most notably the wildly ridiculous facial expressions that don't fit the series at all, along with giving people expectations of what Higurashi is like that it quite frankly is not. I doubt there's any sort of in-universe reason for it because they wouldn't have the liberty of rewriting the VN's storyline, unlike, say, FF7R

Honestly if it is the exact same story just visually improved I'm cool with that as I just love the original story so much. AoT final season should be a thrill ride as well, 2020 may hopefully have a good ending with these animes.

Honestly, the original Higurashi anime doesn't hold up well, especially considering the VN is legally and and easily available for cheap. It does a poor job conveying a lot of the emotional nuances and themes of the story, while at the same time exaggerating what little violence the VN actually had. There's a reason a lot of anime-onlys deem S2 an inferior show specifically because it's not as scary or gory, when that was never the core of Higurashi. The horror was a hook, but it was never meant to keep your attention the entire way through because there's some more important things happening in the story. Even on it's own terms it's not a very good show. I have nostalgia for it, but I can admit it's very heavily flawed. Also it just looks bad lmao~ I expect this new version to almost entirely replace it, if it is indeed a true remake of the story.

I can't say the old anime was a bad adaptation because I haven't played the visual novel. However, I can say the anime is good on its own; It has great pacing and storytelling with compelling characters which, combined with horror and mystery, make up a great story. I honestly don't understand how anyone who's finished S1 would think it's just about the gore when that's not even prevalent in most of the show. For those who haven't played the VN, a better adaptation won't necessarily mean a better show because, like I said, the anime holds up pretty well on it's own. I'm still looking forward for the new adaptation, and if it is indeed a better one even more, because it's probably gonna be a different experience.

Ariel Falcore The thing is all the good stuff in the original Higurashi anime (the storytelling, the characters, etc) are from the visual novel and are better explored there. Meanwhile the flaws of the anime (the lack of answers to some major mysteries, janky animation, etc) are the result of a subpar adaptation. Higurashi deserves more than an anime that holds up “pretty well”. Also if this new adaptation is good and is successful in the west it will result in a new generation of fans.

Wasn't the original Higurashi also animated around the dawn of digital anime? If nothing else, it's going to be interesting having these comparisons between animation then and now for all these shows looking to accomplish very different things, and a good time to look at what made certain elements work more than others.

Jeshire Katt Yeah it came out in the era of fan subs and I think it was one of the first horror anime for a lot of people (another one being Elfen Lied). I remember watching the whole first season on KZbin as a teenager haha. I’m excited to see what they do with this new series. Hopefully is Fruits Basket can get a whole adaptation that hits all the important story beats over several seasons, the new Higurashi will be able to do the same. I know the visual novel was popular in Japan so fingers crossed!

It's early to say, but new Higurashi looks like as loving throwback, just trying to redo everything the older one did right, but with better animation and a different art style. The violence does look a bit more over-the-top than it should, though.

Why are people keep saying that summer season was bad/dry? There were some good shows like Re: zero s2, Deca-dence, Railgun T, God of High School, Fire Force, Great Pretender, Rent a Girlfriend, Uzachi-chan, The Misfit of Demon King , Appare-Ranman and some other titles. I mean yeah some shows were delayed, but even so there were a lot of titles to choose from
