Morgan, the Morgan horse, is one of the first horse breeds bred in the United States. According to the traceable genetic fund, the male "Figure" originates, later renamed "Justin Morgan" in honor of the ego of the owner, the famous breeder and composer Justin Morgan.
All modern representatives of this breed go back to three sons of Figer - Sherman, Woodbury and Bulrush. The stud book of this breed was founded in 1894.
Horses of this breed have proven themselves excellently in the agricultural industry, transportation of goods and transportation of private carriages. The ability to withstand even the harshest conditions made morgans indispensable during the civil and world wars.
Morgan played an important role in the creation of many American horse breeds: Tennessee, albino and others.
Universal morgans are popular today in such disciplines of equestrian sports as driving and harness jumping, park and western riding, show jumping and dressage. In a non-professional environment, they found use in the circus, tourism and hunting.
American Morgans are unusual in that they all descend from one single stallion, an outstanding kid named Justin Morgan, whose height did not exceed 142 cm, but who became famous in weight-carrying competitions and in horse racing both under saddle and in harness.
Today, morgans are bred in 20 countries of the world, the main breeding nurseries are located in 50 states of the USA.
The Morgan’s treasured place in American hearts is reflected in its appearance in films and literature.
In 1972 Disney made a film about the breed’s story, Justin Morgan Had a Horse. It was based on the book of the same name by Marguerite Henry.
More recently, children’s author Ellen Field has gained critical acclaim for her stories featuring Morgan horses. One of those, Blackjack: Dreaming of a Morgan Horse, was a winner at the Children’s Choice awards in 2005.
And Morgans have appeared on screen too. One of the silver screen’s most celebrated equine actors was a black Morgan stallion called Rex. He starred in 21 films between 1924 and 1938, taking the leading role in many of them.
